Jennifer Lawrence v Ch. Odette Yustman* (*LW title) by Lookout/simgrrl
Lawrence: 25yo, 5'8", 127# v Yustman: 30yo, 5'10”, 130#

Before: J-Law, a rising star in the FCBA, faces Odette Yustman representing the “old guard” struggling to hold back the insurgents. Who will prevail?

Odette the older, bigger, woman tonight - something Lawrence is unaccustomed to as she's often the 'big girl' in the fight.

Yustman's 12-4 since January 2013 with two of her losses in her first two fights in 2013 (Vaugier & Winstead). The others were to Strahovski (Oct 2013) and Kerr, when Odette defended her “Queen of the Ice Hotel” title this February. After winning the L/W title from Strahovski, Odette announced Lawrence would be her first defense (after J-Law released Strahovski from their non-title contract which gave Odette her title opportunity).

Lawrence is 5-0 in 2015 and 11-4-1 since January 2013, earning a top ten rank in both major polls (#1 Boxing World; #6 Tractorpull). J-Law KOing 83% of her victims; Yustman slightly less at 78%. J-Law facing (perhaps) the more daunting opposition, but Odette has won nine of ten - including her title win over Strahovski (who KOed Lawrence last January to foil J-Law's first - and until today her only - title challenge).

Jen Lawrence dressed as Marilyn Monroe (circa: Some Like It Hot) while Yustman going for a 'Star Wars' Princess Leia look in a harem girl costume. Crowd appreciates both equally and it only gets better when Lawrence does a slow striptease down to a white bra/panties/garter belt for the fight. Yustman merely skins down her diaphanous harem pants and slips off her over-the-bra top to be ready to fight.

During R1: Both women showing caution in the early going, recognizing their opportunity for success comes with risk as well. Scrubbing lefts used as range-finders for snapping right hands as they trade at distance for some time. Yusty digging her left into Jen's paunch, gets stunned by the counter right and they both back off, nodding with respect at the others show of power. Yustman circling behind her jab, Lawrence in a low crouch, springing up to launch overhand lefts; neither doing any real damage, but both recognize the danger and are duly careful. Round to J-Law on points, but close.

R2: Corners making adjustments, sending their girls out at the bell. This time Lawrence showing more aggression, forcing Odette to fight moving backward. Yustman craftily countering successful, making Lawrence fight hard for her points. Fighters trading left hooks midway; both are staggered, but Yustman lands the next punch...an inside right hand that sits Lawrence down at the ropes. Blond shaking her head on one knee, rising at eight. Yustman closes to finish, but Lawrence clinches and as they grapple along the ropes, the referee has his hands full breaking them apart. Closing minute has Odette the aggressor, Jen fighting behind a defensive front with elbows tucked in, gloves peek-a-boo as she takes a walloping to both flanks, but protects her head as Odette wins round on points wide.

R3: Lawrence recovering well, out aggressive once more; Yustman looking to counter and re-establish her dominance but J-Law's attack keeping Odette too busy defending to do much offensively. While Jen throwing a lot of punches, she's not hurting Yustman, but tactically the younger woman is keeping the champion under wraps for much of the round. It's not until late that Odette manages an offensive flurry, which comes to an abrupt stop when Lawrence drops a left hook over Odette's extended right and puts a wobble in the champs thighs. Rest of the way is mostly inside boxing stuff, both working the body from the wrap as Lawrence's resurgence wins her round on points.

R4: Back-and-forth continues as this round it's Odette getting the jump from the bell and she doesn't give Lawrence a chance to recover. Bell-to-bell body attack slowly wicking away J-Law's strength as the champ puts on a 'body attack clinic' for her young challenger. Time and again, Lawrence rises to the challenge, launching a flurry of punches; each time, the champion puts down the brief rebellion with more hard body punching. Round ends with Lawrence's Oscar-winning rump stuffed in the ropes doubled over clinching around Yustman's shoulders as Odette plugs away; softening up J-Law's tummy with either hand as Odette takes the round on points.

R5: More of the same as Yustman is feeling it now, coming off her stool to rock Lawrence with an opening hook-cross-hook-hook salvo that puts Jen's back against the turnbuckle in her own corner just seconds into the round. From there, Odette puts her left forearm on Jen's chest, riding it up under her chin as she pumps away with the right to the mid-section until the referee can pull her away. Red-face J-Law leans back on the ropes sucking air as the referee warns Odette, demonstrating by putting his forearm on her neck as he gives her a wagging finger in her face for added emphasis. When he waves them back together, Odette steps in and digs the left into Lawrence's belly as J-Law sends a straight right over it that buckles Yustman's long legs! Lawrence with a left hook sends Odette staggering back to mid-ring where Lawrence in desperate pursuit catches her with a second hard right that spills the champ on her back! J-Law on the follow-thru steps on Odette, then stumbles forward into the ropes where she ends up draped forward over the top strand with her arms dangling outside. While the referee steers her to a neutral corner, Yustman is laying star-fished, lifting her head and gazing around in a daze! She rolls over and struggles to all fours as the referee picks up the count, then gets to one knee and finally rises as the count is at NINE! Ref checks her gloves, wipes them off, then restarts the action. Lawrence stalks forward behind the left, as Odette back steps and J-Law's left smacks high on Yustman's chest rather than her chin. Jen sluggishly chases, hammering away with both fists while Yustman retreats in good order, shaking her head to clear it. Back to the ropes, Yustman hunkers down and takes a whipping as she turtles behind her gloves and elbows as Hurricane Jennifer tries in vain to blow her down. At the bell, the knockdown gives Jennifer the round and puts her back in the lead after five hard rounds.

R6: Yustman's corner giving her what-for between rounds; Odette nodding as she's berated, knowing she almost let her title slip away in one careless moment. Lawrence slow off her stool as seconds fumble the mouthpiece insertion, quickly bounds away and Yustman arrives just a heartbeat too late to take advantage of the slip. Odette continues to apply pressure, forcing young blond to fight backing up - which is not Lawrence's strength and it shows. Brunette frequently landing solid left hooks to the breadbasket, keeping J-Law's attention on her lower half, creating openings for Odette to slip in the occasional right hand “upstairs” which rock J-Law. Lawrence fighting back in spurts, showing heart and spirit and late in the round, they come together forehead-to-forehead which stuns both. From there to the bell, it's hammer and tongs; toe-to-toe; no quarter asked warfare! Lawrence teeing off with left hooks and right crosses while Yustman is unleashing left uppercuts and overhand right hands. Both women hurt; both shaken in turn; neither taking a step back...and they keep punching after the bell!
Referee has to jump in to pry them apart. Yustman swings over the ref's shoulder to bop Jen on top of the head as they're pushed away from one another as the referee has a hand on each woman's heaving chest! Odette wins round on points (but it's by a razor thin 1 point).

R7: Both women still panting as they stand for the bell, Yustman jumping out and cutting off the ring, forcing J-Law back onto the ropes; pounding hard, snapping lefts and rights off her torso. Rat-a-tat-tat punches to the youngster's breasts, ribs and waist leaving Jen wincing as she jiggles and bounces away along the ropes. Odette's busy body attack breaking down Lawrence as the young blondes forced to scramble to stay in the fight. A brutal midriff assault like the one that did in Olga Kurylenko sets up the finish after Jen walks into a left handed piledriver square on the belly button! Then with J-Law gutted, Odette rips into the blonde intent on punishing the youngsters body. Lawrence squeaks in pain but gamely refuses to back up; her stubbornness fitting Yustman's plans to a “T”. Odette ducks a half-hearted response over the top to tag J-Law's chin, buckling her knees. When Jen wobbles forward, Odette lifts an uppercut into the underside of the blonde's rack that makes Lawrence spit out her mouthpiece as she yelps in pain, her head coming up just in time to be caught flush on the chin by a second uppercut! Lawrence drops to her knees, then pitches forward on her face with her gloves tucked under her chest.
Odette finishes Jennifer Lawrence with the same right uppercut that put an end to Yvonne Strahovski's title run! Jennifer can't beat the count and Odette's KO7 retains her lightweight championship.

After: “You win some and you lose some,” Lawrence said, taking the (first) “loser's turn” at the podium. “That's true in any fight, but especially when you're in a title fight. You never go into one of these 'expecting' a win, but you can't be afraid of losing either. Strahovski, Yustman, Theron; fighters like that are champions for a reason... they're the best at what they do. Anyone who steps in a ring with fighters of that caliber know the odds are against them. Tonight just wasn't my time...but I'm getting close.”

Odette hugging Lawrence as they exchange places at the podium, giving her props. “She's a tough out,” Yusty says. “Definitely in the same class as Yvonne, Kaley and Missy. She's got youth on her side, but in this game, there's always someone new coming up looking to take your place. She keeps working and developing, in a year or two, she'll be a handful for anyone.”

Asked who was next for her, Odette smiled and deflected like a professional politician, “There's always someone in the wings looking to take your job. I already mentioned Kaley and Missy; I'm sure Yvonne wants a chance to regain the title. Torv and Arterton have been hot lately, as has Decker. You didn't hear it from me, but there's a rumor Katy Perry has designs on the lightweight title,” she laughed.

“I'll take a month or so to see how things shake out among the contenders, then I'll sit down with my brain trust and see where we go from here. Right now....I've got a Halloween party to get to!”
