WITCHES, PUMPKINHEADS AND BLACK CATS III: HALLOWEEN AT THE ASYLUM

BEFORE:

"I've been trying to get some work around here for some time," says the woman in the Cinderella costume with mask. "I know why a lot of girls aren't interested, and, after tonight, I guess a lot more won't be."

"She's no pushover," says the woman in the Snow White costume, also with mask. "But, I don't need pushovers."

ROUND ONE:

O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'What's He Building In There' by Tom Waits..."

McCarthy: "Just that guy's VOICE is creepy..."

O'Dell: "And, coming to ringside is our Cinderella. And this is a red-haired Cinderella, ladies..."

Cassie: "She's tall and pretty sturdy. Got to be a light or a welter..."

McCarthy: "Thank you, Captain Obvious. Maybe THAT should have been your costume..."

O'Dell: "Cinderella into the ring and helped off with the costume and mask to reveal a red bikini and the face of the lovely Sarah Rafferty!"

Tess: "Rafferty a favorite of our former commissioner. As Cassie points out, she's plenty sturdy. I was wondering when she was going to show up on an FCBA card..."

O'Dell: "And, that's 'Fresh Blood' by Eels banging through the arena, and here comes our Snow White...and, since Leelee Sobieski fought last night, she may have just given her identity away with that tap of fist to glove with Mac on the way to the ring...",

McCarthy: "It's one of Weirdo's REAL fighters, and it's not Leelee Sobieski, so it can only be Anna Torv!"

Cassie: "Thank you, Captain Obvious..."

McCarthy: "SHUT UP, SCABBO!"

O'Dell: "Snow White into the ring and helped off with the costume and mask, and, that is, indeed, 'The Aussie Enforcer', Anna Torv in that black bikini she likes. Ladies are about ready. Let's get some picks. Tess?"

Tess: "Rafferty, as I said, has some physicals, but, Torv may be the best fighter Front Street has. Anna."

O'Dell: "Mac?"

McCarthy: "Torv, of course!"

O'Dell: "Cassie?"

Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"

O'Dell: "There's the bell. Sarah wants to bring some of that sturdy size to bear here, looking to come forward and bang with Anna. Torv a bit of a different idea to start this one. She wants to box, and that's exactly what she's going to do. Anna setting up, banging home that sharp left jab, stopping Sarah's progress, then bringing on the rights..."

McCarthy: "Sturdy or not, she's not going to stand in front of Torv like this for long."

O'Dell: "Sarah getting the hands up, giving a little ground now. Anna maintaining distance. She's absolutely refusing to let Rafferty dictate anything..."

Tess: "This is one of the things you've got to like about Anna. She's a veteran and such a smart fighter. She's going to fight her fight and not Sarah's."

O'Dell: "Anna getting off first, getting off in bunches, suppressing the older woman, forcing her to be a counter-puncher. Sarah able to land in spots, but that's about all. Torv has very quickly taken control of this fight and is clearly out-boxing her rival. Ten seconds left in the opening stanza. Good right from Torv and there's the bell. Anna."

Cassie: "Made it look easy in the first."

ROUND TWO:

O'Dell: "Rafferty getting more aggressive as we start the second, coming forward in a high guard, wants to get in close and bang. Torv scoring as the redhead moves in, but Sarah able to close and dig some body. Anna firing back in kind, and there's some serious body work going on right now..."

Cassie: "Not surprised Rafferty wants to do this. The way she's built, there aren't too many fighters winning a war of attrition with her."

O'Dell: "Torv willing to give it a go, though. Anna staying in with Rafferty, banging back, going upstairs, then working down. Sarah almost all body work right now, doing just enough to the head to keep Anna honest. We've gone from ranged boxing to the phone booth in one round, and neither fighter seems to mind."

Tess: "Kind of surprised Anna's doing this, though she CAN, we've seen it before. She's just so good at long-range boxing..."

McCarthy: "Sometimes, when you're a girl who can do a lot of things, like Anna and ME, of course, you go where the fight takes you."

O'Dell: "And, it's definitely taken Torv into fairly tight quarters right now. Rafferty tying up, leaning in, trying to make Anna take weight. Torv not having any of that, shoving off, creating space to hook the body. Rafferty banging right back in what's become a round of hooks and uppies. Final seconds ticking off and there's the bell. Close. Rafferty."

Tess: "All even at 19"

ROUND THREE:

O'Dell: "Third begins with Sarah trying to work forward again, but Anna's changing things up. The blonde STICKING that heavy Front Street jab on Rafferty, stopping her cold with it and then backing her up a step with a solid right hand. Rafferty intent on closing, but the redhead not having any success, getting touched up right now..."

Tess: "THIS is what I thought we'd be seeing from Torv."

O'Dell: "The Aussie putting punches together very well. She's finding every gap in the redhead's defenses, not allowing her to close, not allowing her to get off in lead, forcing her to the defensive and making her counter-punch. Rafferty game, but she's being out-boxed for the second time in three rounds."

McCarthy: "This is why I say Torv is the best light Weirdo has. He ought to cut loose all these other losers and just push Torv and Sobieski."

O'Dell: "Coming down the stretch in the third. Anna in command. She's gotten into quite the rhythm now. Everything flowing very well. She's got Rafferty backing up again, and Anna again steps forward just enough to maintain distance, then goes back to work. Five seconds left in the round. Torv one last flurry, and there's the bell. Anna easily."

Cassie: "And, she's back on top, 29-28."

ROUND FOUR:

O'Dell: "Rafferty determined to pressure now. Not having any success boxing with Torv, so she's going to get aggressive and damn the torpedoes. Anna using that left to slow the advance, keep the distance, set up the right hands. Rafferty resolute, working forward, moving the head and shoulders, keeping the gloves up..."

Cassie: "I've actually been pretty impressed with Sarah's boxing ability. Obviously, she's had fights on lower levels and has some skills, but, you aren't going to make your FCBA debut and out-box Anna Torv. Not going to happen. So, she's got to change terms here."

O'Dell: "Rafferty closing, banging body. Anna firing back in kind. Fighters clinching, wrestling around in there and RAFFERTY WOBBLES TORV WITH A RIGHT HOOK! She created an opening with rough stuff inside and she got the right on target. Torv covering up now as Sarah goes to town..."

Tess: "And, Rafferty staying under control here, Jenny. Not going wild like a tyro. The advantage of being 42 and having plenty of lower-level bouts under your belt."

O'Dell: "Most certainly is. Sarah backing Anna slowly up. Torv circling a bit, staying off the ropes, but Rafferty inexorably forcing her back into them, and the redhead getting off heavy now that she has the blonde trapped. Rafferty SHAKING Torv with a hard right hand, hammering away lusty, getting all of that solid lower body into the punches, really getting some stuff on them. Torv rolling with, keeping the guard high, countering in the odd spot, but mostly running clock. Ten seconds to go. Sarah jabbing, hooking body, banging a right off the guard and there's the bell. Rafferty wide."

McCarthy: "Even at 38, but Rafferty needed to finish. She's going to be sorry she didn't."

ROUND FIVE:

O'Dell: "Sarah looking to follow up as the fifth begins. She's forward aggressively again. Anna willing to give some ground here, sticking the left out hard, creating space with it. Sarah keeps coming, though, working and walking through the Aussie defenses, getting in close, going body. Torv willing to fire back in tight again..."

McCarthy: "This time, it may not be a matter of choice. Legs may not be all the way back yet, so Torv may not want to do a lot of moving."

O'Dell: "And, as she did in the second, Anna holding her own very well in here. She's tenderizing plenty of meat as she works the redhead's flanks, midsection, and ribs, while Sarah does the same to the Aussie. Both women going up, then back down, then right back up again, looking for the big shot to the head while working over the body..."

Cassie: "Again, Rafferty's maturity showing. She's not out there head-hunting, desperately trying to finish. She knows Anna's recovered, so she wants to consolidate."

O'Dell: "And, Torv isn't making that easy. Anna working hard and effectively in close quarters, shoving and grappling with the powerful redhead, tying up, shoving free, finding little openings for hooks or uppercuts. Sarah very strong in there, getting lots of hooks home both to the head and the body as we come into the final seconds. It's a grind right to the bell. Close. Rafferty."

Tess: "And, Sarah has her first lead, 48-47."

ROUND SIX:

O'Dell: "Rafferty's got terms she likes and she wants to enforce them. Forward again, despite Anna's defenses. Sarah working through the jab, closing the range, but Torv moving better this round, has the legs back, she's working back and right, a slow turn, keeping the distance she wants, making the redhead work to match footwork..."

McCarthy: "And, Torv so slick. Watch how she lands the left to the right side of Rafferty's face, holding her in position for a follow on right hand, almost HERDING her into the right. That's good stuff from Anna."

O'Dell: "But, Rafferty not discouraged, keeps coming forward, willing to eat some jabs to close and NOW SHE EATS A RIGHT HAND! Rafferty stumbles and nearly goes to her knees! The redhead's hurt and here comes Torv. Anna opening up on Sarah, sends her wobbling back into the ropes. Rafferty now covering up and taking heavy fire in a complete 180 from round four!"

Cassie: "That right came with full extension. Didn't land square, but there are about 80 lights and 40 welters in the current rankings who would have gone down from that."

O'Dell: "But those strong legs held Sarah up. Not sure if they'll keep doing so, though, because she's taking a licking along the ropes. Torv clinical now, working the left jab up high, hooking body, trying to create openings for the big right hand. There's a right that split the gloves and hurt Rafferty again! Referee not going to watch much more of this. Sarah blocks a left and ties up, trapping Anna's arms. Torv shoving free, hooks the belly and there's the bell! Torv wide, but Sarah still standing."

Tess: "57-57 after six. And I'm getting more impressed by Rafferty every round."

ROUND SEVEN:

O'Dell: "Torv looking to follow up as we start the seventh. Anna now working forward behind the heavy left, backing up Sarah, who doesn't look to have the legs all the way back. Rafferty with a fighting retreat, though, she's firing back in counter, giving ground grudgingly. The blonde patient, not forcing, just slowly gaining canvas."

McCarthy: "She's the definition of a pro. Never gets too anything. Always an even keel. Always thinking. Always working."

O'Dell: "We use the term 'clinical', and you could use the term 'surgical' right now, too. Torv not throwing barrages of punches, instead, she's using the left to set up the right. Doubling at times, even tripling. Getting that jab home to create the opening for the straight right hand. Rafferty still game. Hanging in there. Firing back when she can. She's landing some good shots in response, too..."

Cassie: "Rafferty's really got some power. You can tell she's strongly built, but that doesn't always translate. In her case, it absolutely does. She knows how to transfer all that to her glove."

O'Dell: "Thirty seconds left in this one. Torv a good left-right. Rafferty a right hand counter and DOWN GOES SARAH! A WHISTLING right cross from Torv and Rafferty blasted to her back!"

Tess: "Never saw it."

O'Dell: "Count at three. Four. Five. Sarah rolling to her belly at six. Seven. Eight. Rafferty pushing up to hands and knees. Nine. TEN! It's over! Sarah can't get off her knees and your winner by KO7 is 'The Aussie Enforcer', Anna Torv!"

McCarthy: "Give Rafferty some more credit. That was a pretty clean right hand, and she didn't just stay on her back. Couldn't beat it, but this girl's tough as nails."

AFTER:

O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"

Tess: "I have our winner, Anna Torv, and, Anna, there was a lot of heavy leather flying around in there..."

Anna: "She can really hit. And she can take, too. I hit her with some really good punches, and she took them and kept coming. Almost got up after that last one, and there are a lot of girls who'd STILL be down after that one."

Tess: "Are you going to be in action again this year?"

Anna (nodding): "Adrianne's still dealing with that shoulder, so that's on hold, which means I'm going to be looking for one more fight before the calendar turns. Might be here. Might be on pay-per-view. We'll see."
