BEFORE: Shona McGarty wasn't best pleased when she heard about the Flyweight Title Eliminator tournament selection and vows to earn herself a future opportunity the hard way, by fighting former champion Emily Atack first. However BBU TV's Denise van Outen indicates that Atack was last upset by Lily Collins and her current form is a great unknown to many fans and experts. She can bounce right back from that painful loss and derail McGarty's Top 10 prospects or slide further down the pecking order like quite a few former divisional champions have experienced before. Just as Adele Silva or Imogen Thomas about it!
Shona McGarty wears a red bikini and white gloves. Black hair tied in a curly ponytail. Emily Atack wears a light blue bikini and black gloves. Blonde hair tied in a couple of pigtails. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the flyweight division.
Round 1:
Shona wants to enforce her presence from the very first punch of the bout but Emily wastes no time into tearing the brunette's midsection which surprises most of the audience as it becomes clear these two girls decided to launch a proper flyweight war here. Emily leans on the front leg and harpoons Shona's guts however eats a solid overhand reply and is rooted to the spot when McGarty blasts a left/right cross on the temple to bump the blonde off behind a tight guard. She takes it from there and switches low to punish Atack's ribcage ducking a jabbing series upstairs herself. Both girls keep pounding away in close range but Shona scores the more meaningful punches and reels the former champion on her heels down the stretch; she fails to trap her along the ropes though and Emily shows enough resilience to circle away from more punishment in the dying seconds but that might have just lost her the round despite plenty of early promise.
Round 2:
McGarty resumes the midsection approach to freeze the blonde out and now the overhand counter goes wayward to sink Atack on her heels much earlier when the brunette rips into her liver area and makes her gasp in pain. A quick hook on the temple half-spins the former champion but the put away uppercut on the chin gets blocked which saves Emily from a looming disaster. Following a brief clinch she beats the brunette for a hooking combo and snaps her head backwards before a chest muggin' attempt sways McGarty back to the ropes. Emily charges to the body to keep the hot prospect at bay and lands several jabs upstairs as well but Shona's guard withstands the onslaught and another late clinch concludes the action.
Round 3:
Emily shows impressive agility to avoid another brunette rush but lacks a proper response and suddenly both girls cut thin air in numbers leading to a clinching stalemate on the minute mark. Shona digs her mitts into the blonde's midriff but is bumped off within seconds as Emily looks to send more leather on the rack and forces the brunette to seek mid distance respite. The chase is on though and McGarty weaves around on her feet trying to outsmart Atack with the defensive circles; Denise van Outen smells a trap here and Emily almost gets caught from the back foot as Shona riffles a left/right hooking combo and is unfortunate that it only grazes the top of the blonde's forehead and sends the fight into another lenghty clinch that seemingly works in Atack's favor according to most of the experts.
Round 4:
Shona has a real fight on her hands as she must hassle the blonde around the ring and fails to land any of those big punches she advertised before; Emily uses the champion's experience and lets the brunette wear herself out a bit however even van Outen begins to wonder if there's another trap being set up here, this time to blow McGarty's fuse before too long. A tactical affair develops from the second minute; Emily's footwork enables her to fend off Shona's menacing swings and at the same time the brunette thinks better off it too and drops the pursuit ideas having to come up with plan B on her feet. She's no Lily Collins so there's little chance Atack makes the same mistake twice and the crowd begins to lose their temper after a lacklustre showing that took away all the promise from the opening couple of rounds.
Round 5:
More of the same in the fifth, the early pursuit from McGarty flames out as time goes by and Atack hooks up with the overhand response to keep the brunette barking in mid distance. However the blonde makes a stronger push to punish the undefeated opponent and rocks her with a left/right combo on the temples followed by another chest muggin' attempt. Shona clearly dislikes being punched in the breasts but this is one opportunity she can drag Atack into close range; a hectic struggle sways more brunette mounds though and Emily whips a crushing hook on the nose to sink McGarty into a moaning reality. Another left hand follows and backs her into the ropes where Emily launches a jabbing series on the midsection to keep the brunette trapped for remainder of the round looking simply puzzled by how this fight is going.
Round 6:
Atack moves on the front leg and splits McGarty's gloves well in the opening minute before driving a gut-checking combo on the navel to bend the brunette forward. This time she doesn't let her off the hook and blasts a vicious right uppercut on the chin that sags Shona on the spot and enables more piercing jabs to crash into her face afterwards. Emily pours on with more onslaught and rocks the cumbersome opponent into more spasms of pain and finally breaks her resilience with repeated strikes on the liver area. McGarty checks out and looks to circle away to safety but she fails to match the blonde's footwork and gets pummelled around the ring instead with Atack slowly but surely taking control of the proceedings. McGarty yields the last inch of real estate and slumps against the turnbuckle in the dying seconds and it's all Emily from there on, she bulldozes the ribcage to sink the brunette amid loud gasps and riffles one last hook on the left eye to give her a nasty gash right at the bell.
Round 7:
Shona's all caved in to start the seventh but soaks up more facial punishment as Emily rolls back few years to whip more relentless leather straight up the alley. The black ponytail snaps back repeatedly and the aches are getting louder and louder before McGarty's guard is finally destroyed, the embattled brunette wobbles forward after taking too many hits upstairs but her misery is not completed until Atack belts her with a switch on the liver area that makes the proud girl scream, a left hook clips the jaw and Shona never even notices a right hand on the wounded eye THAT SENDS HER CRASHING FLAT ON HER BACK moments later... Emily shakes her glove in delight but quickly struts back to her corner as Shona has a hard time beating the count with her left eye in all sorts of bother... ref doesn't call for the medics and that's a bad break for McGarty who is quickly pummelled back to the ropes as Emily looks for the home run... all upstairs for the former champion who gives Shona a proper neck crank and renders her guard absolutely useless... The black ponytail snaps around like a feather in the wind and Shona's eyes are shut on the two minute mark with the unbeaten contender almost out on her feet... but the final blow nails her on the liver as Emily lands a freebie and CHOPS McGARTY DOWN ON HER KNEES... the brunette's simply unable to embrace all this punishment and gets counted out on all fours sobbing quietly in the proccess!!! KO7 Emily Atack!!!
AFTER: That's a genuine upset for most of the Wembley Arena and pretty much rules out any controversy about McGarty's absence in the Flyweight Title Eliminator tournament. Emily Atack simply knocked all those hot prospects out of the brunette's head tonight and perhaps salvaged her own nose-diving career. The extremely humiliating defeat to Lily Collins hasn't been forgotten yet but if there's any sign of life after that BBU title she held back in 2013 then Shona McGarty found out about it the hard way. Several past champions have struggled to retain their Top 10 rankings once they were stripped of the title and Denise van Outen likes to think that tonight's emphatic KO wasn't just a dead cat bounce for Emily. Still, she's in no mood to ask for a rematch with Lily Collins and suggests any of the Mulheron sisters will do fine instead. One has to figure out though if there's anything left from the Mulheron team after it's failed Maria Ozawa experience!
Final result: Emily Atack def. Shona McGarty KO7.
