Boxing on the Beach: (Partial Report)

Innovative marketing strategy: Liz Hurley and Elle McPherson both own competing swimwear lines - only natural for companies to meet on the beach with a representative team of models for some head to head competition. The big Hurley/McPherson bout followed 5 fights which saw McPherson girls hand Hurley girls a series of devastating set backs - Liz went into Elle with the Hurley side down 4 fights to 1. "Not to worry," Liz breezed on camera before entering the ring. "This fight's the only one that matters." Elle, surrounded by happy, upbeat young models - most flushed and humming with victory - was understandably confident. "Liz is a pretender in the woman's apparel market," Elle said with a smile. "Time for me to expose that fact in vivid fashion!"
Elle fighting in a black bikini of her own design, Liz in a red bikini under her label, quickly put an end to any speculation that this would be a seniors/nostalgia type bout, establishing a level than none of the younger models had come close to in the previous contests. Long time Hurley watchers did detect some deterioration in her defence - only to be expected as reflexes are the first thing to go as a fighter ages - but she compensated with an increased committment to offence, stepping-to Elle in uncharacteristic fashion and initiating several lanky-limbed exchanges.

The problem for Liz was that Elle was her equal or superior in every way on the day. Mac's legs seemed springy and tireless, legging her back out of range, loping her to either side with effortless grace, and her timing seemed undiminished by the years as she caught Hurley's face again and again with nifty poking shots from either side. Backing up or advancing, Elle seemed to be a step ahead of Liz, constantly beating her to position and punches, constantly ending the exchanges with the hardest, most eye-catching blow. Elle's slinging right hand, uncoiled from her shoulder in sexy, twisting fashion would rock Liz in the first, put her wobbly butt and nearly down in the third, stun her in the fourth: by the half way mark, Liz Hurley's beautiful face was as badly lumped up as fans had ever seen it, and things would only get worse.

McPherson kept up a gangly, dangling, lanky lather, chipping straight shots at Liz, keeping Hurley on the end of the jab, clouting her condor-wing hooks and piling up points when not actively seeking to hurt Liz. Well behind on points, Hurley could ill afford her favourite strategy of slipping and countering off the ropes: more and more she had to gamble, bringing the fight to a taller, taunting blonde. In the tenth round, a badly demoralized Liz Hurley slumped against the ropes a badly beaten woman, and finally got Elle to cooperate as McPherson waded in to finish.

Liz began hitting the gaps - twisting her shoulders side to side, ducking into her shots, dragging sleek counters into Elle's bony ribs and stout chin. Mac's legs shook early, but her confidence never wavered: she had beaten Liz Hurley all night long and now recklessly pressed to finish her. Hurley's chin-checks grew more ferocious as she dipped side to side, pulling lethal leather onto stubborn Aussie jaw: even as her backside began to wobble against her control, and her punches began to sail or misfire, Elle staunchly stood her ground, trying to tag Liz a capper.

It ended in thunderclap fashion: a slip; a thick left hand flat to taut blonde paunch; a clouting, short right hook to the temple and Elle sprawled on her back as KO'd as she'd ever been in her life. Liz Hurley sank back into the ropes, sobbing for breath. She'd lost 6 of 9 rounds going into the final, but steadily worked her way back into position over the last three to devastate her corporate and physical rival. Hurley girls rejoiced: Liz had come through once again, dealing McPherson Incorporated a terrible blow in the process.
