Before: Important flyweight showdown with title implications - Danes looking to bar the door as Hewitt wants into the top contender's club. "I hate to say this with HBO spending so much money to make Jennifer look like a threat," says a grinning Claire, "but this is an easy fight for me. Jen's bringing a suspect gut, weak chin, so-so skills and a pair of bad legs into a Claire Danes bout? What is this? Christmas? I'm loving this match up!" Hewitt stung by the lack of respect, comes armed with audio-visual recap of her Packard triumph. "Kelly said all the same things," snarls Jennifer, "right up until I knocked her the fuque out. When Claire finds she can't box me, she'll try to punch with me and it'll be lights out for her too. That's right - I'm predicting the 'elusive' Claire Danes will finish this fight on her back where she belongs." Jennifer in white string bikini, Claire in red bikini from that 'drug running in Turkey' movie.

During R1: Claire Danes show bell to bell. Nice prowling footwork, jab keeping Hewitt at bay - Jen looking skittish early, hands up but tentative, not throwing with any conviction against Danes upperbody angles and sharp pivots. Danes able to jab, slide in close, slap side to side on the ears or flanks then set down on a hard hook or right hand, bend low to slip under Jenny's hook, pivot quick to the right and lay a swinging right hand counter loud against the ribs. Hewitt getting touched up, has the presence of mind to step out rather than let Danes mow her down inside, but strawberry blonde's the boss - orders a shutout on her brunette.

R2: More smooth Claire Danes nibbling, swatting, slipping, and turning - more stiff and rigid Jen waiting, reacting late, missing. Danes with the chin tucked behind that left shoulder, getting off in licking combinations, then swivel-pivoting to the left, turning tight around her shoulder, hooking Jen's ear to guide her past and set her up for the next series. Claire getting the straight right poke off her shoulder to Jen's face, getting the hook up top and scoring to the ribcage with clawing lefts and rights whenever brunette covers up in confusion. Shutout Claire Danes - she helps herself to a chunk of brunette buttock to send Hewitt back to her corner frustrated, scowling.

R3: Claire's D setting up the offence - she steps back while ducking and bobbing - inducing Hewitt forward as brunette thrusts out hopeful lefts and rights, walking Jennifer into a glorious counter right uppercut. Hewitt put wobbly butt, head back with a crowd-pleasing snap - she's all shook, tip toeing away as Danes steps forward to slug! Hewitt hurt, but finally able to track Claire lands her first punches as the girls basically get after it toe to toe. Nice slick punching at close range, flat footed, well balanced stances - girls getting off in 2s and 3s, heads in tight, both snatching hooks to the midsection, clawing at one another's jaws, bringing hands back sharp to reset. Danes warned for using her elbows against Jen's shoulders as she turns over some very short punches this round.

R4: Jen feathering jabs in the first minute, gets Claire making too many defensive moves - brunette able to step in and throw hard straight right hands to the body to back Danes to the ropes. Claire takes over with brilliant counterpunching off the ropes, rolling side to side, bending at the waist, coming out of the torso-roll with left or right uppercuts and stunning Hewitt with crisp, accurate shots to ruin brunette punching. Jennifer forced to stagger back, eyes brimming - she's getting taken apart as Danes continually fits sneaky punches inside Hewitt's own. All Claire down the stretch, now working a sullen Hewitt over at the ropes - Jen covering up - Claire roping her to the flanks, patiently applying stroking lefts and rights. Jen lolls forward - Claire shrugs her shoulders to get after those plump jugs, just cleaning up down there as Hewitt soaks it up.

R5: Claire in complete control - jabbing unopposed, positioning Jen in the ring, steering her. Danes so cute with the left shoulder, getting low to edge into Jen, pivoting off the body to step back out, opening up fresh angles, nailing Jen with clean hooks or right hands depending on which flank she turns. Hewitt starting to fall in to clinch for breaks, reaching around Claire's waist - Danes accepting the girl on her chest, then going to work. Claire leaning in, reaching around Jen's arms to palm up on brunette ribcage, then going to work with blunt, brutal heel-strikes, pounding away on the hips, kidneys, in underneath the ribcage. Hewitt devastated by these tactics - Danes warned for them - blonde snaps at the ref: "make her stop holding!" Claire rolls to her fifth straight round, really piling up the numbers on Jennifer. Hewitt discouraged on her stool, face puffing up nicely, body throbbing from Danes' constant attention.

R6: Jennifer breaks up the shutout as Danes goes defensive. Jennifer feathering jabs, not always landing them, but keeping them on Claire - blonde slipping and retreating, making too many cute moves just because she can. Hewitt also ignoring the head with her first punches, just trying to connect with Claire's chest or belly, then trying to snap hooks to the head if it's there. Claire content to lean in and out, change up her level and distance - Hewitt not landing all that clean, but at least she's punching.

R7: Claire refreshed, gets after Jennifer with bad intentions this round. First minute - Claire establishing her feet - she's able to lean in or out with her left shoulder, hooking off the jab, then drilling that straight right hand to Jen's mouth. Second minute, Claire's in her rhythm, now she's setting down on the shots. Hard straight right unhinges Hewitt's knees - Danes reloads and pokes home another right, sending Jen staggering backing on her heels to the ropes. Final minute, Claire climbs aboard. Jennifer reeling, guard drooping - Danes just applying the lather - stroking to the body, then curling tight off the chin or cheeks - wide hooks and right hands, then sharp, biting hooks, crosses and uppercuts. Danes using her left elbow to prop Jen up, slashing and tearing at what's left and HEWITT GOES DOWN! Jennifer wilting under the accumulation, taut belly pushing in and out as she sobs on all fours - Danes struts away all smiles as Hewitt is saved by the bell.

R8: Claire's corner tells her to 'clean her up' - Danes marches across the canvas to do just that. Danes easing her shoulder into Jennifer to push her up against the ropes, then easing out to lick right/left against the waist, coming off the body with tight hooks as Hewitt digs in. Jennifer gritting her teeth, rolling the punches, bending forward to protect her battered midriff from further abuse as Danes hungrilly scrounges away down there. Midway through, Hewitt timing her blonde, girls trade hooks and CLAIRE STEPS AWAY WONKY! Danes shaking her head as she walks away - Hewitt pouncing, clubbing an awkward right behind the ear and driving Danes face first to the ropes! Claire sets up wounded, using her shoulder to edge Jen back, then looking to lean away into the ropes to buy time. Hewitt clawing hooks, raking hooks, missing then CONNECTING as Claire gets clipped just inside her raised right mitt. Danes dazed, stupid against the strands - Jen bends into a looping right off the teeth, then turns back into the hooks and CLAIRE'S HELPLESS! Jennifer swinging away, teeth bared, rights and lefts shattering off Claire's face AND THE REF STEPS IN! Danes busted up, blubbering a groggy protest - Jennifer all busted up, staggering away hands raised - she's the TKO8 winner!

After: Unbelievable, comeback of the year type effort from Hewitt who somehow turns back an avalanche of Claire Danes work to emerge the victor in what had been a one-sided contest to the 8th. Danes outboxing Hewitt inside and out, wearing her down in the body, hurting her in the 3rd and 4th and nearly finishing her in the 7th, but Jennifer's pre-fight prediction holds true. "She tried to slug with me," says a battered Jennifer Love in post fight. "She had no respect for me and when she thought I was all done, she came in to mop up and I sprung my trap. I was waiting for Claire to get cocky - that was my plan all along." Danes trembling with anger when she gets her senses back, demanding a rematch, wiping at tears - has to be heartbreaking to have had the rug pulled out from under like this.
