 Leighton Meester vs. Jessica Lowndes

Front Street Gym vs Lioness Club of America
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Rubber match in what's been an interesting series so far, with the fortunes of the fighters flipping around as much as the results. The first time out, Lowndes was the unmanaged Canadian hottie in just her second fight who pulled an upset over an established Meester, then went out and lost to Jamie Lynn Spears. By the rematch, Lowndes was managed and showing signs of promise, while Meester was struggling to break through, so, of course, it was Leighton who won. In the years since, Meester got buried in her own stable and traded, while Lowndes ascended to the top of the flyweight division, claiming both the divisional title and the JMD honors. Leighton has since turned her career around in Philadelphia, and that's where we find ourselves at the beginning of tonight's festivities...where, as you might imagine, no love is lost.

"She's minor league," says Jessica with her normal smirk. "That's why I could beat her in only my second fight and why she needed to get lucky to beat me in my eighth. Well, I'm a veteran now, a champion, an elite flyweight. And, she's STILL minor league. So, guess what's going to happen tonight."

"She talks a good game," says a hard-eyed Leighton. "But, she knows what I did to her last time, beat her up, made her body quit. And, I'll do it again tonight."

ROUND ONE:

Starts the way their last fight did, with Lowndes wanting to go right at Meester and Leighton having none of it. The Front Streeter makes with the jab, wants to box, keep distance. Jessica all about closing and brawling, looking to lay in the hurt. Leighton limiting those opportunities with sharp jabs and good footwork early, but Lowndes resolute, willing to take to give, and, when she gets in position, she does some serious giving. Lowndes committing on her punches, getting plenty behind them, working body and head, making Leighton take leather. Meester, takes, and then gives, banging back, getting drawn into long exchanges with Lowndes, willing to stand and fight just to prove not only that she can, but that she's willing. And she holds her own pretty well. But, this isn't Meester's game. It's the Canadian's. And, with a fighter as good and dangerous as Lowndes, playing her game is not the way to win rounds. It's close, but, at the bell, it's Lowndes who has the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Jessica right back after Leighton, intent on not just beating her rival, but breaking her. Meester immediately responding in kind, and it's round one all over again, with the fighters toe-to-toe banging and brawling just like Jessica wants to do. Slowly, though, Meester seems to come to a decison that she's not going to play into this any longer. She gets some space with the feet, and keeps it with the jab. Now, she's looking like she did in their last fight, not jabbing and circling, not dancing, just using a good, solid left and good footwork to get space to work and the angles to land punches. Lowndes keeps working forward, of course, and, when she gets to spots, she gets off lusty, scoring plenty. But Meester limiting those opportunities again now, and she's doing scoring of her own while she does so. It's a good, action-packed round, and another close one, but, this time it's Leighton who claims it and evens the fight at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Pattern now set. Jessica wants to close and bang. Leighton wants to create space and box the Canadian. The result of this one is going to come down to which fighter can enforce her terms. And, in the early going, that's Leighton. She's got the jab going and she's in rhythm. She's getting punches home in combination, touching the former champ up and slowing her down. A lesser fighter might get discouraged by this, but not Jessica Lowndes. She just keeps working. And, that work pays dividends. She slips a left, steps past Meester's glove, bangs a hook to the body and follows with a straight right that ROCKS the Front Streeter! That quickly, Lowndes has turned things around. She has Meester hurt, and there are few things worse to be that hurt in front of Jessica Lowndes. The Lioness is immediately all in, and she sends Meester staggering back into the ropes under a barrage of shell, nailing her with hard leather repeatedly once she's trapped there. Lowndes is stepping into everything, looking for the off switch. Twice she turns to the referee as if to ask him why he isn't stopping it, and she's not the only one asking. Meester seems ready to go and is doing very little. But, the ref lets the fight continue, and Leighton's standing at the bell. It's Lowndes wide, though, and Jessica's now up 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Lioness looking a little weary to start the fourth. She comes forward, but the work rate is seriously reduced. She bangs a little body, throws some punches upstairs, but it's mostly single-shot stuff. Meester, still trying to get the legs back, responds by clinching, tying up Jessica to slow her down, while doing a little body work of her own. Things pick up some as the round goes on. Lowndes seems to recover a bit, and Meester's getting the legs back. The work rate increases, but they mostly stay toe-to-toe, in close quarters, banging and clinching, wrestling and hooking body. There's nothing pretty about this round, and there's far less action than we've seen up to this point. Punches DO land, but they aren't as frequent, as powerful, or as clean. It's pretty desultory stuff, especially when compared to what the first three rounds offered. And, it's fitting that the result is just as desultory. A drawn round, which leaves Jessica up 39-38 after four.

ROUND FIVE:

Lowndes has her groove back to start this one. She's off the stool and charging forward, but Leighton's got her legs back, and she uses them to generate the space she wants. She picks Lowndes off with the left, leaves her hanging out there for the right, and gets said right home effectively. Jessica, again, keeps coming, but, this time, she's not having much success. Leighton's got the range and she's peppering the former champion, stopping her cold, even backing her up. And then it gets worse. It's a three-punch combination that does it, left jab, straight right, left hook. The last two land clean and unhinge Lowndes' knees. Jessica wobbles and nearly goes down. And, now it's Meester who's all in. Leighton charges forward and gives the Lioness a thumping, bodying her back into the ropes and pounding away at her. Jessica gets the guard up and puts the body on sale. And Leighton buys and buys. She tenderizes every part of Jessica below the bust and above the waist. She's got Lowndes screaming into her gloves by the end of the round. But, what she doesn't have is Lowndes on the canvas. Jessica rides it out, and, while Meester wins it wide, it's a 10-9 round, meaning we're all even at 48 at the half.

ROUND SIX:

Leighton looking to finish. Meester coming forward, looking to back Lowndes up, body her, get physical. But, Jessica responds in kind. The Canadian's not all the way back from last round's punishment, but she has enough sturdiness in those sturdy legs to hold ground and force hand-to-hand combat in close. Which, of course, is exactly what Jessica wants to force. And, Leighton again gets sucked in to long, brawling exchanges in which both fighters land plenty of solid stuff. There's a lot more body work going on now, with Meester looking to add to the damage she inflicted last round and Lowndes looking to repay her for it. Lots of tummies being tenderized. Lots of ribs being ripped. And, by the final minute, rack becomes involved. Both fighters might argue about who went there first, because it happens via an almost wordless agreement, but, both girls go there and, in the last 30 seconds, pretty much take turns whacking hooks and uppies into bikini tops. At the bell, it's another close one to Jessica, who now leads 58-57.

ROUND SEVEN:

Meester not going back to working for range. She's willing to get down into the trenches with the Lioness and fight her fight. Again, perhaps not the best strategy, but, the fact is, Meester's held her own in there, and she's doing it again here in the seventh. Clearly, this thing is becoming less about winning and more about imposing physical will. Both fighters are intent on doing it, and neither is able to do so. Jessica won't back up a step, except on the rare occasions when Leighton is able to land a sharp uppercut that knocks her back. But, Lowndes steps right forward again in every case. Leighton occasionally willing to take a backward slide step to set up a punch, but, not willing to give any canvas to her rival. So, they stand in close and bang away. Plenty of body work happening, just like in round six. And, racks are not spared. Both fighters wincing as short, hard punches land in those bikini tops. At the bell, it's yet another close one. Meester this time. And we're even again at 67.

ROUND EIGHT:

Absolutely nothing in it at this point. Seven rounds gone, four close ones evenly split, two wide ones, also evenly split. It's been quite a fight, and it continues to be as the fighters get right back into the phone booth in the eighth. All the negotiating of terms has gone out the window in favor of stepping up to your opponent and letting the hands go. Neither girl is forgoing defense, mind, but both are working hard in close, thumping every piece of exposed flesh they can find. Things come off dead center when Meester lands a solid right hand. Lowndes is forced a step back and Leighton comes forward right into a right-hand counter. BOOM! Meester wobbles, clearly buzzed, and Lowndes turns into a buzz SAW. Jessica again all over her rival, PASTING her with both hands. Meester quickly in full retreat, ends up on the ropes again, in a high guard, selling that body cheap. This time, though, Jessica not interested. The Lioness is going for the kill. She's winging away with both hands, missing more than she hits, but hitting plenty. Meester hanging on desperately, trying to run clock. And, again, she manages to do it. The bell rings with Leighton still on her feet. Lowndes stomps away, clearly frustrated. She's won the round wide, but, it's 10-9 again, meaning she's managed only to build another one-point lead at 77-76.

ROUND NINE:

Unlike in the fourth, Lowndes showing no signs of fatigue after a big round. She's smelling blood in the water and is intent on taking Meester out of there. Jessica right after Leighton off the bell, backing her up, touching her up. Meester willing to give ground now, playing defense, counter-punching, and landing some sharp stuff while doing so. Lowndes walking through it. She knows this thing is close, and she doesn't plan to take any chances with the judges. She wants to end it and end it now. Meester taking full advantage of that effort, stinging Lowndes again and again, but, still, the Canadian keeps coming. And LANDS A HARD RIGHT! Meester GOBSMACKED about midway through the round, and Jessica all-in again! She's going to fire the ammo dumps flat now, throw in all the reserves. This is the chance to end it, and she's going to put everything she has left to that task. Meester reeling, Lowndes winging away. DOWN. GOES. MEESTER! Lowndes another scintillating right and Meester sent crashing to her back! She rolls to her belly at five, but can get no further! It's over! And your winner by KO9 in typically brutal fashion is Jessica Lowndes!

AFTER:

Lowndes all strutting cockiness as you can imagine. The fact that this was a near thing lost on the ultra-confident former champion. "I TOLD you!" she shouts into the microphone in the post-fight. "She's MINOR LEAGUE! She can beat B-list girls, but she doesn't belong in the ring with a champion like me. And, I'm going to be a champion again soon. I've got my eye on those belts, and on JMD, too. And everyone in this division knows, they don't want to get in my way. Just ask Leighton how well that works. When she wakes up."
