DANIELLE CAMPBELL VS SAMMI HANRATTY
Results: Lookout  Writing: Archer
Danielle: 20 YO, 5’3 (1.60 m), 2-4-0 since 2014, Pretty Little Punchers
Sammi: 20 YO, 5’1 (1.55m)  0-1-0, Unmanaged

Before: “It’s not many fights where I have 2 inch height advantage on an opponent, “ Danielle (DC) Campbell wryly observes. “but I know what all-out fighters we small flyweights can be. I expect Sammi to keep me really busy—at least until I finish her off.”

Spunky Sammi has been aggressive in seeking active management: “Well, of course, I’ve been aggressive, when you’re small and feisty like me, you know there are plenty of other ‘small and feisty’ flyweights around. You need to attract attention even if you have to do it yourself. I have had my first fight, but Samia Ghadie was just too experienced for me.  I think I did as well as a rookie could, but she beat me and that’s a painful fact.  So now I want my first win—though it means  I will have to beat that ‘Amazon’ over there.”

(Danielle Campbell makes a show of looking around to see if someone else has come on stage and then points to herself with a quizzical look at Sammi., Sammi nods: “Yes, I mean you.” DC grins and stands up and bows in Sammi’s direction saying: “That’s the first time I’ve ever been called an Amazon!” Everyone has a good laugh).

Come fight night, Danielle has chosen a blue bikini with a white snowflake pattern, blue boots and gloves with white laces. Her long brunette hair in an elaborate braid interlaced with blue and white ribbons. Sammi has selected a shiny red with green trim bikini. Red boots and gloves with white laces. Her hair is in a simple long ponytail secured by a bright green and red bow. Sammi seems very eager to go. DC looking like the patient veteran as the instructions are given. Quick swipe of the gloves. Sammi all but runs to her corner, while Danielle makes a calm walk to her own. Bell rings. It begins.

R1: Sammi out of her corner like a shot and launches a wild, rapid-fire attack on Danielle’s midsection. DC seems flustered at the  sheer velocity of the rookie’s attack. Sammi driving hard, trying to force Danielle backwards. It works for a few steps, but then DC gets her jab going and puts hard leather into Sammi’s face. Stung, the rookie falls back, but she shakes off the facial leather and tries to come back in. Danielle ready for the attack and uses the jab to break up the offensive and send Sammi stumbling back with both cheekbones reddened. Danielle then shows some nice footwork in circling the dazed rookie and giving her head shots from surprised directions. Sammi shows recovery late in the round as she reveals she’s got a jab, too! DC turn to get stung by quick right across the mouth and a follow-up shot to the right eye. Danielle remains calm and keeps Sammi away to the bell. Round goes to Danielle Campbell by a good margin.

R2: Sammi seen to get a stern talking-to by her trainer and she is much more in control coming out for this round. She is bobbing and weaving, but moving in on Danielle, still striking hard to the belly and chest with quick shots to the face when she can find an opening. A strong Hanratty left catches Danielle in that already bruised right eye and the impact this time sends DC spinning away in obvious hurt, Sammi gallops after the retreating PLP fighter and manages to corner her near the ropes. DC fighting hard to stay off the ropes, banging Sammi’s head over and head, but the stubborn newcomer won’t quit trying. Danielle finally resorts to clinching to buy herself some time. Another close-in action follows. Sammi showing she stay with the more experience Danielle and it earns her a close win on the cards this round.

R3: Danielle’s right eye getting a lot of PLP attention during break. It gets even more attention from Sammi Hanratty this round as she keeps going after that eye with great determination DC seems very defensive this round once she realizes what her opponent is up to. Trying to keep the eye safe really getting in the way of her counterpunching and it allows Sammi to work over DC’s torso for extended periods. Sammi likes being on the offensive and is smiling broadly as Dani backways behind a not-too-effective jab. Danielle avoids more eye damage to the bell, but it allows Sammi to win this stanza by a wide margin.

R4: Danielle’s turn to get a stern talking-to as PLP trainer Nia Peeples warns her she’s letting the rookie dominate her. DC comes out with fresh determination, though she lets Sammi come in close before unleashing on the rookie. For Sammi Hanratty, it is like the roof has suddenly fallen in on her. She came out convinced she was going to go on putting the hurt on DC Campbell, but suddenly Danielle crashes a quick left right uppercuts into her chin and then lefts and rights clobber her cheeks from side to side. Sammi reeling, her defenses are confused and inaccurate as the fired up DC just ravages her face with avenging leather. Yet Sammi’s knees aren’t buckling, she lowers her head and jabs back, but it’s not enough to keep DC away. Sammi finally forced to just go face-in-gloves as Danielle swarms around her banging her flanks and head to the bell. Bell sounds and Danielle steps back. Sammi cautiously raises her head, her face now bruised and swollen. There is a bewildered look on her face. Danielle gives her a cold look and then turns away.

R5: Corner crew swarming to patch Sammi Hanratty up for this round, but she is off her stool with a glassy look in her eyes. Maybe her corner should have thrown in the towel, some wonder, but it’s too late now as Danielle Campbell circles around, firing off punches, Sammi trying to react to the incoming shots, but she’s clearly sluggish and struggling. No surprise when DC tries to end it all with a charge that smacks Sami’s jaw with a crushing right. Rookie spins away from the impact and lands hard on her chest. Sammi rolls over and pushes herself up to her knees. Tears are running down Sammi’s cheeks as tries to force her uncooperative legs to rise further, but the limbs refuse to cooperate. As the count reaches  “…NINE!” Sammi gives up the struggle and sits back on her heels, her head bowed in failure.  “…TEN YOU’RE OUT!”

Danielle Campbell has defeated Sammi Hanratty KO5

After: Danielle joined un the ring by Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson and Sasha Pieterse who congratulate her on her latest victory. Danielle smiling and waving to fans.

“Sammi’s got some talent, her punching is hard—I’m, going to have a wicked black eye in the morning—but she got careless when she thought she had me after the 3rd.  I hope she will keep this lesson in mind for her next fight. Sure she should fight again. You don’t get better by watching other girls box. Meanwhile. I’m working to bring my record to .500 in 2016,” says Danielle Campbell to the press.

Sammi Hanratty clearly heartbroken at her second fight loss. Still, she talks to the press as soon as she is able say frankly: “I know now just how much I have to learn. I made the rookie mistake of thinking I had Danielle was hurt when she really wasn’t. I need to be more accurate with my punching and my defense needs a lot of work. But despite all the hurt I’m feeling, I was glad I got the chance to fight, and I want more fights. I want to prove I can win and win consistently. I only hope my next fight isn’t too long in coming.”

Sammi Hanratty did show a lot of energy and punching power tonight, but she also showed she has much to learn about the sport. She seems determined to use this fight as another learning experience, but when will she get the chance to put those lessons to work? Meanwhile, Danielle Campbell showed she can win a fight she was supposed to win which should help her in the Confidence Department. In addition, she showed growing boxing skills and that should help her move her career forward in the coming year.
