MILENA GOVICH (39 y/o, 5 ft 8, W: 8, L: 10) vs. BRIDGET REGAN (33 y/o, 5 ft 9, W: 21, L: 10)

Before: Govich entering this fight on a five-bout losing streak, admittedly over the course of three years, culminating in a disastrous loss to divisive Gena Lee Nolin last month: give her credit, though – she’s not intending to end that streak against a second-grade fighter, she wants Regan, unanimously considered one of the best fighters of the division and the sport in general. Govich’s found her first regular job in acting since her Law and Order season, on MTV’s “finding Carter”, all she feels she needs now is a return to success in the ring, too. Regan was the dominant welterweight of 2015, beating her arch rivals freeman and Righetti during an eight-fight winning streak rarely seen in the big girls’ league – after her shocking upset loss to Lancaster, she’s been inactive for a couple months, though, and so Govich’s seeing an opening. “In 2015, we might have seen the best Bridget Regan of all time, but Sarah’s knocked her back to the pack, and I don’t think she’s recovered from that yet. I know I can withstand her power, and match her with my right hand, and once I’ve tested her chin a couple times, this will be an extremely interesting fight. Of course, Bridget’s always been kryptonite for Amanda, so roughing her up will be amazing from that aspect, too.” – Bridget responds, “I was ready to say a lot of nice things about Milena – she’s usually sturdy, stubborn, tough and massively strong – but then I saw the Nolin bout, and that wasn’t pleasant at all. I mean, Gena’s not me, so I was a bit surprised when I got this call. But Milena’s still an interesting opponent. She’s not chinny, so you usually have to put in a lot of work, slowly soften her up over a lot of rounds, and that’ll be a great test for my power.”

R1: Big girls open with lots of respect, usually hopping carefully out of distance, only marginally circling closer at times, sensing way forward behind muted feeling-out jabs. Govich’s first to gain steam, burying a hushed right hand in Bridget’s sternum, immediately shuffling into quicker jab rhythm, pressing weight forward to back up Regan fiercely at ropes. Regan thronged into her corner, but proving solid against early power shots, moving into nimble earmuff, stepping alternatively left-foot, right-foot with big-girl agility, as Govich bashes away thickly on her flanks using wide, twisting punches. Bridget: unmoved, her eyes wide-awake – she’s using the first opening to neatly fetch an powerful answer right through Milena’s mitts, landing under her mouth, tops it up squaring away with a series of harder lefts onto brunette chest. Govich’s faltered by the right, circling out hastily in pain, only slowly straightening up, but cautioning Regan off with alarming haymaker rights out of pocket. Fight moves back mid-ring throughout last minute, punches bouncing off gloves rigorously, but not doing much damage. Round decided only late: Govich mounting more vigorous offensive during last twenty seconds, sneaks in a rugged jab through hands on foe’s cheek that obviously hurts Regan – Milena eager to stay big on top, walloping eager wide rights into Bridget’s stomach just before the bell, casting a fiery “I’m competitive, b-tch” glance to foe as ref separates struggling beauties for break.

R2: Regan packs out a pummeling, clubbing jab, her right hand crouched tightly at chin, jabbing close to the body before shoving destructive rights into gut. Bridget’s weaving from side to side, going on to whack mightily to Milena’s biceps/arms – Govich clearly outfought, not handling either the speed or the efficiency: grunting as she retreats into absorbing position, constantly in earmuff, body shuddering under the thumping shots, only half-blocking the occasional punch with her arms. Regan’s still restraining herself, although there are hardly any counters coming back from her opponent: she’s free to bash away thickly to strong lats/waist/chest. Milena’s shut out, numbed by the pressure, eyes showing growing concern, only feebly trying to counter with jabs of her own during last minute, but more or less pressurized, tenderized all round long by Bridget’s brutal left fist into sulky, hunched opposition – Regan stays calm at bell, walking back to corner tight-lipped, icily determined, while Milena’s docile after three minutes of daunting jabs.

R3: Milena anxious to show presence from the bell: stalking Regan behind thumping jabs upon Bridgy’s head/chest, hooking muscularly inside, walking Regan down for a change, as brunette steps away in nimble pivots, only sticking tailing-off counter jabs to Milena’s jugs on her way out, ends up losing position, besieged at ropes by Govich’s beefy pressure. Milena rushes up, wrapping her girl up in weight, tackling her to ropes, as Regan’s clinching, but getting out-worked inside – Govich forces brunette to struggle against her body, her rolling lefts establishing thudding control over brunette. Regan settles into defense when she’s unable to reverse position against Milena’s sturdy frame on top, endures sustaining strain on her tummy/chest by Govich’s rough-and-tumble rights, her whipping jabs. Regan’s moving her head well, generally managing the power okay, but not getting through with her off-ropes counters, as Govich holds and squirms, out-punching Bridget with sloppy, brawny hooks to body.

R4: Girls trade massively body-to-body: right at bell, Bridget’s slamming right hands over Milena’s thick jabs, clubbing two brutal hooks to mouth, shoving Govich onto her heels by sheer weight-of-shot, forcing her girl into desperate attempts at meaty clinches. Govich lambasted, but proving resilient: Regan gets through with a crushing right to Milena’s temple – Govich’s blinking, looking unfazed by the individual shot’s power, but now clearly repressed. Milena’s pushed into reverse, no longer successfully bringing her beefy jabs into the exchanges – stepping in and out too late, cleanly caught by counters – her reflexes slowing throughout third minute, as Bridget patiently brings in intimidating haymaker rights, slowly backing up a stunned Milena at ropes, bashing her with rib-busting punches, slapping past Govich’s counters with more precision and good legwork. Late in the round, note the difference in their eyes: Regan’s glowing, wide awake, always looking to jostle out of the grasps, fining Govich for the transgressions with clubbing shots upside the head – Govich’s turning numbed, eyes bleakly staring on in exhaustion, absorbing hefty punches on her torso, while struggling to properly defend her skull against Bridget’s startling, massive rights.

R5: Govich’s proud, broad body treated shabbily by Bridget’s greedy, relentless fists, already looking tired, her legs turning rigid – she’s not moving properly out of shelling range, not getting her own weight forward or impose weight on Bridgy herself. Regan stays out in mid-distance, dictating pace and position with her sturdy lefts. Mid-round, Govich bravely wades into Regan, accepting gruesome terms closer up to the body, shelling her opponent hard, percussive jabs – Regan’s countering immediately, blocking attacking fists strongly, twisting a quick haymaker right over Milena’s skull-seeking left onto brunette’s mouth, rendering a stunned, ass-kicked Govich all woozy, punch-drunk from the sudden shock, stepping flimsily about on the spot. Regan smiles, tying up, all up in Milena’s face/head with I’m-bigger-than-you swagger, pressing weight onto foe, rocking Milena a wide body hook to chest bursting in from the side, speeding two massive knocking jabs through Govich’s vague defenses, and MILENA’S WOBBLY BUTT – she’s all hurt, her head spasming back from the impact! Govich’s body’s tottering helplessly forward into MORE friggin’ HARM from Bridget’s pocket right – the wiping punch’s grazing Milena’s nose, and her head’s snapping down abruptly – it’s a wonder Govich’s strong legs keep her up, as she’s bringing her full weight into a messy, sweaty clinch to survive the round, her eyes blinking rapidly, her face swelling terribly. Regan’s heartless, comfortable in the jostling in-fight, pumping in lustful rights to Milena’s mid-section, her foe’s body jerking up and down sadly, buttocks shuddering from trying to withstand the wood-chopping punches. Govich staggers back to corner at bell, looking doomed.

R6: Milena’s a physical wreck stomping into the action on sluggish legs with tired arms, her eyes now swollen: she’s just dimly, stubbornly marching into Regan’s ruthless, still fiercely precise jabs. Bridget only needs three or four knocking lefts violently cracking through to Milena’s mouth/temple/nose to set the scene, backing up a helpless brunette at ropes: Milena’s butt in turnbuckles, her lashes batting in dazed confusion, she’s gasping, swooning from a jerking right hand turning her head to the side. Milena’s sobbing out in pain, totally bewildered by the astonishing beat-down administered on her, as Regan reaches in under her arms, stacks her up powerfully against ropes. Bridget packs in another two bruising rights hand to Govich’s tensed-up paunch, then twists her left into a massive hook on chin! Govich’s body’s already slopping forward, her head lolling, tottering a few steps on autopilot – she’s virtually punched out already – then her head gets busted by yet another massive straight Bridget right, and Milena’s eyes roll back in shock: she’s collapsing on impact, sloshing rag-dolled into ropes, then crashing forward onto canvas, landing face-down, her arms trapped under her belly, eyes closed, demolished by a KO6 Bridget Regan!

After: Regan shakes out her hands in mock pain from the knockout punch, struts back to corner like a supermodel, as Milena wakes up mumbling, sobbing, a limp wreckage led back to her camp on trembling legs. Regan already established as a powerful right-hand puncher – shows her talents as a precision power jabber tonight: stubborn, never-ending poke slowly breaking down an increasingly outgunned Govich brick by brick. Regan classy, of course, after the initital jubilation: makes sure her opponent’s all right – “But Milena needs to be handled with brute force. Her whole game’s about being sturdier and more robust than the other girl. But sorry, I’m not your average other girl, so, yeah, pounding her out was my only option”, she says, obviously happy to impress in her post-title-loss bout. Post-fight, Katrina Law and Nadia Bjorlin can be seen busily giving interviews about how Govich’s ruining the reputation of their stable, and “should be put out of her misery”.
