BBU "ST. PATRICK'S DAY SHOWDOWN"

(Republic of Ireland vs Northern Ireland)

BEFORE: BBU held annual fights to celebrate Bastille Day (July 14th) featuring French competitors before but it's the first time the mighty Irish power will be put to the test on St. Patrick's Day no less. Representing Ulster is Newry-born BBU veteran Christine Bleakley while making her official debut is the Republic's Laura Whitmore of RTE fame among other things (like finishing #37 in the last year's FHM Top 100 Sexiest list). It's of course a classic blonde vs brunette battle to add more spice to the already massive Irish pride all around the arena...

Speaking of the venue, we're in London's Wembley Arena since neither of the two TV presenters agreed to fight on enemy territory and even Whitmore's complete lack of experience didn't make her roll over for the Ulster brunette. That stance would make long-time Bleakley nemesis Denise van Outen proud but the BBU TV lead reporter is absent tonight and we have Kate Abdo doing the play-by-play commentary instead.

Laura Whitmore wears a green bikini top, white knickers and orange gloves. Long blonde hair tied in a sleek ponytail. Christine Bleakley wears a red bikini set and black gloves. Long black hair tied in a thick ponytail. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the catchweight 122 lbs category since Laura has announced her intentions to compete in the bantamweight division outside of tonight's Irish showdown.

Round 1:
Advantage Ulster... Height, weight and reach support Bleakley's bid for glory and she gives the newcomer a rough welcoming party... blonde ponytail snaps all over the pace as Laura struggles to embrace the leather storm and begins to groan amid a FURIOUS attack from the Lioness Club veteran... Bleakley obviously seeks punishment majeure rather than just a ranking victory and she reels Whitmore towards the ropes with seldom seen ease but somehow fails to land that killer punch and jars her right hand against Laura's frantic guard that enables the RTE presenter to grab a much-needed clinching respite... pushing and shoving in the corner follows as Christine gets vocal in her efforts to break free but instead of putting the icing on the cake she eats a heavy left hook on the chin and spins back to center of the ring just as the clock expires.

Round 2:
More fury from the Ulster's finest... she tries to catch Laura with a high bomb but underestimates the blonde's bendiness and loses her poise in a fruitless pursuit for the best part of the round... Whitmore finds her niche in ducking and weaving but when Kate Abdo is ready to accuse her of lacking the proper mindset to be a BBU contender, she slams a left/right combo straight into the brunette's face and leaves her sagging on her heels for a while... even Bleakley didn't expect that and if only Whitmore had more experience under her belt, she would have cleaned out some Ulster clock but that's not the case and the blonde settles into another clinch which actually helps Christine's cause who doesn't seem so keen to break free anymore.

Round 3:
More Ulster hunting early but there's just a lack of speed and agility in Bleakley's attire and the supreme lightweight power fails to find it's target... Laura fancies her counterpunching success a bit quicker than in the second and she gives the brunette a solid thumping to the body before catching the older woman on the chin... Bleakley winces in anger rather than pain but she can't enforce her presence in close range anymore and Laura earns a lot of Kate Abdo praise when she shoves the lanky Ulster girl to the corner and ravages her tummy to make Christine yelp in visible pain as another rounds ends in a stalemate but with Whitmore firmly on top. And that's not what St. Patrick's Day had in the original script!

Round 4:
Laura defies more odds when she catches her foe on the chin with another speedy rush but this time she jumps on the offensive train from the get-go and dwarfs Christine's fire power with pure accuracy and timing. Bleakley has to back off and find a new plan but Laura keeps stalking her with more high jabbing and clips the chin far too often for the Ulster comfort. In fact Christine blows her fuse in the final minute and leaps into a frantic attack but despite a nice combo landing straight into Whitmore's temples, a lurid hook nails the brunette on the nose and shuts her off on the spot; she wobbles into the blonde's embrace and allows Laura to smack some extra leather into the jugs which force the referee into some action because the Eire lass just doesn't want to let go here! Bleakley in heckuva trouble after four rounds and that leaves Kate Abdo totally gobsmacked!

Round 5:
Christine drops the furious approach for good but Laura remains equally hesitant in approach and prefers to wait out the brunette's recovery... now, that's a questionable call since even the biggest breakthrough success on the cards still requires the finishing touches and Laura's visibly reluctant to take over the heat... she allows Bleakley to bide plenty of time in mid range weaving and when she finally leaps into a forward drill, Bleakley is ready for it and blasts a double overhand to burst Laura's lips and stack her up in the center of the ring.. more clinching and jug pounding follows but this time it's Christine tearing some Republic cleavage apart and bumping the otherwise high-flying blonde back to the neutral corner where the ref is called into more action when the bell doesn't halt the frantic Irish assault.

Round 6:
Kate Abdo has this fight 48-47 in Whitmore's favor at half-distance but both women seek immediate head hunting finish and while it's natural for a veteran like Bleakley, it seems a VERY bold change of plans for the blonde. Still, they battle it out hammer and tongs and Christine's lips are squashed raw deep into the second minute but the lightweight power MUST come to the fore especially that the dark-haired woman isn't going to submit to a smaller and lighter opponent... she harpoons Laura on the tits before adding a nasty cross hook on the nose that finally throws the RTE lass off her stance and buries her on the heels with another well-placed uppercut that shatters the blonde's jaw... Whitmore goes all wobbly butt after that last punch and bellows out into a hectic earmuff in the corner... the clock expires just as she's ready to give up the ghost according to Kate Abdo and even the final bell doesn't stop Bleakley from thundering more jabs into the exposed ribs leaving Laura short of breath and basically stumbling onto her stool.

Round 7:
Whitmore's on short supply now and Bleakley's too experienced not to take advantage... she rips immediate left/right combo and bursts between the blonde's gloves to connect with the jaw... Laura's head snaps back repeatedly and the Republic hopes are dwindling with every shot landing on her otherwise pretty face... BLEAKLEY HOMES IN WITH A FACIAL BARRAGE and tears her foe's resilience apart just before the one minute mark.. Laura sags on her heels but half-spins when the brunette nails her on the right ear and when the gloves collapse by the side, she's in no position to even notice a right-handed cross hook on the temple that bawls her eyes out to the orbit on the spot... BLONDE GIRL DOWN... REPUBLIC HOPES DOWN... Whitmore hits the deck face-first HARD at Bleakley's feet and remains spread eagle all the way until the bitter end of the full count.. KO7 Christine freakin' Bleakley!!!

AFTER: That was brutal finish from the veteran but even Christine shakes her head and admits the fight was much closer than she ever anticipated... "Laura will make a lot of noise down at bantam but let's give her credit for standing up to the test!", it's a surprise to see the Ulster brunette helping out with the medics as poor Whitmore was knocked out cold on her debut and can't quite share the moment. She will hear a lot of praise from Kate Abdo too but the decision to duke it out slugfest style in the sixth was a classic rookie mistake that led to the blonde's downfall: "When she understands how this celebrity boxing world works, she will be a notorious gatekeeper to everyone from Lisa Maffia to Nadia Forde! I mean BBU would be nicely suited to a true bendy queen as too many girls are power oriented and just want to take their opponent's heads off instead of walking the fitness line. Bleakley blew her gasket after like two rounds of failing to nail the blonde girl and if Laura can annoy her rivals on her debut like that, she must follow it up. The results will come for sure..."

Indeed, Laura Whitmore gets more air time in defeat than the victorious brunette veteran but Christine is actually London based just like Laura these days (say hello to BBC & ITV contracts) so they share a social background and there's no story to tell about Denise van Outen getting in the way for now. Kate Abdo would LOVE to see Whitmore replace van Outen as Bleakley's chief rival in the future and it looks like BBU will be treated with a genuine St. Patrick's Day rivalry for years to come regardless... you just can't leave such a promising blonde upstart like Laura without work for too long! Watch this space!

Final result: Christine Bleakley def. Laura Whitmore KO7.
