It is often written that but for Raquel Welch, Britt Ekland may have gone down as the best pound for pound boxer the celebrity world had ever known. Her early successes, against unknown, but live opponents, revealed her to be a precocious talent, equaling Raquel in mobility and adaptability in the ring. Everyone knew that Britt couldn’t punch, but she was so much quicker and more professional looking than her typical opposition that the Welch bout loomed as a celebrity super fight of sorts.

Welch resented the blonde on many levels. In 1970, at the peak of her powers, Raquel had filled out her lanky physique, and appeared so much bigger than Britt when the two finally met, that onlookers couldn’t help feel Britt would have been better off fighting the 1966 version of the American powerhouse. During the staredown, Raquel made no attempt to disguise her contempt, curling her sensuous lips as Britt boldly held her gaze. Raquel wore a lime green bikini, hair straight an long don her back while Britt fought in a predominantly blue print bikini.

The fight would disappoint, shock, and delight various viewers in equal proportion, As the girls approached on springy legs, Raquel leaned in with a low right hand, countering Britt’s opening jab with a slinging right to the rib cage. Welch pulled back by reflex, out of range, but then broke into a gleeful smile. Britt clutched her body, arctic blue eyes swelling with tears as she folded forward. Raquel loped in, pounding away as the blonde folded forward over her knees, giving up her shiny tanned back to the hard fists of the brunette It was over in seconds as Raquel rained down brutal sweeping lefts and rights across Britt’s vulnerable kidneys , and the lithe blonde collapsed, clutching her back as she lay on her side. Welch laughed in a mixture of joy and relief at this savage KO, winning the fight in under 60 seconds.

Britt Ekland would never be the same. She would never get over being so utterly dismissed by the legendary brunette, and would enter almost every fight a more tentative. Defensive and ultimately less effective fighter from then on, her immense popularity insured that Ekland would never want for matches, but the greatest that could have hers was stolen from her forever on this night.
