Ch Blake Lively vs. Missy Peregrym
Ginny's Academy vs Lookout! Boxing
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Blake not messing around in her first title defense, going right after one of the top pound-for-pound in the world and a four-time champion in Missy Peregrym. The same Missy Peregrym who stopped her when they fought sixteen months ago. "I had her that night," says the blonde champion with a shake of the head. "I had her, and I let her off the hook. But. Not tonight. Tonight, I'll finish the job."

Missy, meanwhile, has been waiting almost three years for another shot at the gold, despite having lost only two fights since 2013. "Finally,'' she says with a smile. "Finally, I get a chance to get the belts back. I've been waiting a long time. And, I'll make no mistake tonight."

ROUND ONE:

Peregrym makes no mistake. She's right after Blake off the bell, surprising the blonde, who expected at least a bit of feeling out from the brunette Canadian. Instead, Missy's moving forward, bouncing past Blake's defenses, banging away heavy with both hands. Lively forced into a strategic retreat. And, then, strategy goes out the window. Peregrym hops in, lands a short left hook and a nasty straight right and BLAKE'S HURT! That quickly, Blake is hurt. And, Missy goes to town. And keeps on rolling. Right to the next town. And the next. She's all over a stunned, shocked Blake, plastering her with hard rights and vicious left hooks. Lively's on the ropes, covering up, getting shaken again and again. Ref seems reluctant to stop this thing in the first, but he can't watch much more of it. Finally, with Blake desperately clinching, the bell rings. And Lively survives. But, it's Missy wide for the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Peregrym train keeps rolling. Boston. New York. Philadelphia. Baltimore. Washington, D.C. You name the town, the Canadian goes to it. She's absolutely HAMMERING the champion now. Blake can't get her legs under her, can't get her front stabilized, can do nothing but survive. And, she's barely doing that. This is scary stuff, gang. Scary if you're a lightweight in the FCBA. That's the reigning champ in there, a girl who's beaten Winstead, and Cuoco, and Theron, and Upton, and she's getting absolutely TOASTED by an on a mission Missy. Peregrym's not just firing on all cylinders, she's adding cylinders to the engine and firing those up, too. It's brilliant stuff, and it results in yet another three minutes of desperation from Blake. Again, Lively hangs on. Desperately. But, again, that's all she manages to do. At the bell, Peregrym's got it wide again and she leads 20-18.

ROUND THREE:

Cleveland. Columbus. Detroit. Toronto. Peregrym train just rolling on. She's after Blake, battering her, making her look as bad as a reigning champion can look. Lively appearing out on her feet and times, barely resisting. And, then, Peregrym finds another gear. She just lets the hands go, realizing she's almost got the blonde finished. Almost. Not quite. BOOM! It had to be perfect, because Blake is clearly still buzzed and doesn't have her legs completely under her. So, she's not exactly generating max power. But, even so, with the perfect detonation point, even a lesser explosive can have a devastating effect. And, the detonation point is perfect, indeed, right on Missy's chin. Peregrym wobbles, nearly falls. It may only be the follow up flurry from Blake, which stops the forward momentum that was sending the brunette to her face and begins driving her backward, that keeps her on her feet. Missy's now that one looking to be out on her feet, and Blake's the one doing the battering. The brunette is quickly rope side, where she remains pinned for 90 seconds. She manages to stay upright. But, Lively's now changed the momentum and cut the lead to 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Train rolling backward. Toronto. Detroit. Columbus. Cleveland. Blake taking back all the canvas she lost in the first two rounds. The blonde's using that long jab to tee Missy up, then drop right hands on her And, the power in those rights is only increasing as the blonde shakes off the first two rounds and gets a solid base beneath her for the first time in quite some time. Missy, meanwhile, in full retreat. Washington. Philadelphia. Baltimore. New York. Canadian trying to slow the offensive onslaught, but, like Blake before her, just unable to do it. If the legs were there, movement might throw a wrench in it, but, absent the ability to use that athleticism, Peregrym can't stay off square and she simply keeps getting beaten up. She manages, at least, to stay off the ropes most of the round, but, down the stretch, she's trapped and taking again. Lively opening up a can of you-know-what trying to finish, but, again, she's denied. However, for the second consecutive round, it's the blonde wide and we're now even at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Lively slows the pace. She's not going to make the same mistake Missy did and allow the offensive to outrun her supply lines. Instead, she goes to the jab, begins boxing, and, again, it's Peregrym's iffy legs that allow Blake to dominate. Lively can get the jab on consistently and use the leg to set up hard follows, keeping Missy on her heels. Peregrym gamely tries to hold ground as the round goes on, but Blake's not having it. She's stepping in, backing the brunette up, GOING DOWN??? BLONDE GIRL DOWN! A lovely right hand counter from the Canadian catches the blonde coming in and Blake falls forward to her hands and knees! Place going crazy as the referee counts over the champ, but Lively's up at seven and ON COMES MISSY! Peregrym winging away at Blake, sitting down on everything, rolling that train right back in a westward direction. Lively jabbing back in spots, but mostly taking for a full minute. And, as one of the two fighters has for every round so far, Blake finishes on the ropes getting a beating. When the bell rings, it's Missy 10-8 and back on top 48-46.

ROUND SIX:

Peregrym in full control now. Lively in survival mode. Amazingly, she's right back where she was at the end of the second round, taking heavy fire, unable to slow Peregrym down, getting the full-on Missy P treatment. It's awesome to watch, if you've no rooting interest or if you're a fan of the Canadian brunette. But, if you're a fan of the American blonde, well. "Awe" isn't just the root of "awesome". It's also the root of "awful". And, these are three hard to watch minutes for Lively's supporters and, of course, her corner and management. Blake doesn't just get taken to the woodshed. She gets beaten with every piece of wood in it, then stays inside as the shed is imploded and falls on her. It's, again, hard to watch. But, there's this. The blonde takes the licking and keeps on ticking. Peregrym batters her, but can't bow her. Peregrym beats her up, but can't stop her. At the bell, Blake's still on her feet. She's been shut out, but she's still in the fight, though she's now down 58-55.

ROUND SEVEN:

The "why" may never be fully known. It never really is in sports. There are always theories, and it's almost always a combination of things that causes something like this. That combination here likely includes Missy being a little gassed. Yes, Peregrym can fight all night. She's a great athlete in terrific shape. But, she's spent a lot of shell in the last two rounds, not to mention the first two, and she may simply need to restock the magazines. Another factor is a change in tactics from the blonde. The length she's tried to use in so many uses already is put to yet another use in the seventh, clinching. Lively clearly wants to slow the pace, much like she did in the fifth, and, with Missy being a bit low on shell, she's able to do it. So, after six action-packed rounds, the seventh is more about clinching and playing for time for Blake and, perhaps, putting some more gas in the tank for Peregrym. The result is in favor of Blake. The train slows with the pace, and Lively's able to grab the round close and cut the lead to 67-65.

ROUND EIGHT:

Brunette not having any more of this. She's recharged and back at the blonde. Challenger quickly tossing the champ to the defensive. Blake countering well in spots, but being almost reduced to that after a short while. Missy not exactly pouring it on, but slowly increasing pressure. She's looking to put Lively away on the cards if not on the canvas. BOOM! In a fight definite by big punches, another one lands. It's a blistering right from Blake that sends Peregrym stumbling backward. And, Lively is immediately all in. Just a few minutes ago, Blake was all but toast. Now, however, the bread is, shall we say, in the other slot. Now, it's the brunette who's in deep trouble and the blonde who's dragging her to the woodshed. Again, Missy's tough as nails and sturdy as reinforced concrete. She won't go, despite taking shot after shot that would have put lesser lights not just down but out. But, take them she does. Lots of them. And, yet again, a round ends with one of the fighters getting savaged on the ropes. This time, it's Peregrym who welcomes the bell. When it comes, Lively's pitched a shutout of her own and cut Missy's once solid lead to 76-75.

ROUND NINE:

Blake cautious to start the ninth. Perhaps overly so. Blonde has to be thinking about all the reversals we've seen in this fight. Clearly knows how dangerous the brunette is, even if she currently looks a little buzzed and more than a little scuffed. So, Lively  goes jab. Creates space. Wants to box at range. Wants to do all the familiar, comfortable stuff that she does well. But, in doing so, she's giving the brunette both time and space, two things the Canadian desperately needs and wants. Missy's able to hold her own on these terms, and, even begins getting the better of things, timing the blonde, countering well, beginning to make those quick forward forays for combinations. Peregrym's slowly taking control of the round. Lively's corner not happy. Telling the blonde to get busy. But, the momentum is now with the brunette. BOOM! DOWN GOES MISSY! This time it's Blake doing the timing, catching Missy as she slips forward, sending her to her back with a straight right hand. Lively in the corner watching the count. Hoping against hope. But. No. Peregrym back to her feet. She beats it. Referee waives Blake forward. Lively takes him up on it, gets busy, lands some solid stuff, again backing Missy to the ropes. But, there's little time. The bell tolls. Blake's grabbed it 10-8 and she now leads 85-84. But. This isn't over yet.

ROUND TEN:

Crowd on its feet as the tenth gets underway. Obviously, the fans aren't looking at the cards, but they know this thing is likely hanging in the balance. Peregrym a little iffy early, but Blake again not pouring into the breach. Again, the champ wants to box, and, again, the challenger able to hold her own on these terms. But, Missy's been told. Told she needs this round and maybe more. She's still a little buzzed, perhaps, but she's not going to go quietly, not going to lose a chance to walk out wearing those belts by not going for it. About a minute in, she begins turning up the heat. That quickly, Blake's backing up, surprised, not that Missy WANTS a firefight, but that she's capable of starting one. But, she is. Peregrym landing heavy all of a sudden, has Lively covering up. Blonde thrown almost completely to the defensive as the Canadian tries to claim the titles with one final throw. BOOM! Again? Yes, again! And DOWN GOES MISSY! Again, it's a right hand counter from the champ, and, this time, the challenger crumples face first to the canvas. And, this time, she's not getting up! Peregrym tries. Rolls to her back. Gets to her right hip and elbow. But, that's where she is when the count reaches ten. It's OVER! And your winner by KO10 and STILL Unified Lightweight Champion is Blake Lively!

AFTER:

Breathless Lively can't help but smile as the crowd chants "F-O-Y!" "F-O-Y" "F-O-Y" "Yeah," says Blake, "It was a great fight, and I knew it would be. But, I also knew I'd GET her this time. And, for all of you who've been saying this division's wide open now that I'm champion, it's NOT. The door is closed. This is the Blake Lively Era. Get USED to it!"
