31 January 2017 Antje Utgaard vs Jordin Sparks

BEFORE:

"It was Khloe Kardashian that did it," says Jordin without a hint of a smile. "I've been trying for years to break in to this organization at welter, where everybody says there isn't enough talent, and my management couldn't get me a fight. And, then Kardashian, who's famous for being somebody's sister and doesn't have an OUNCE of talent gets a fight. I told my people, get me a fight or I get new people! And, here I am."

"She's big and athletic," says Antje with a nod. "No question about that. Only thing is, I'm bigger. And MORE athletic."

ROUND ONE:

O'Dell: "Back at ringside and that's 'Battlefield by the young lady coming to ringside right now, the lovely Jordin Sparks!"

McCarthy: "And, Sparks is right, you know. This place is becoming POLLUTED with Kardashians, just like my television! That phony Kim has never been any good. She gets beaten up more than Ronda Rousey! And, those two young Jenner punks were all the rage around here last year. And, now there's that no-talent Khloe..."

Tess: "Don't hold back, Mac. Tell us what you really think!"

McCarthy: "Shut UP, Walmart."

O'Dell: "Drink up, boys, as Jordin climbs into the ring and is helped off with the robe by her corner crew. Wearing a deep blue bikini and she's clearly been working out hard getting ready for her FCBA debut. And, that's 'Heads Will Roll" by the Yeah Yeah Yeah's, and that means 'The Scandinavian Stunner', Antje Utgaard is on her way to the ring."

Cassie: "Utgaard talked a little about being athletic in the pre-fight. She's as athletic as any welter in the FCBA. Can bend over backward, grab her ankles, and roll into a ball. Not many girls her size can do something like that."

O'Dell: "Antje into the ring and helped off with the robe by Jewel and Neve. She's wearing that stars and stripes bikini we've seen before. And, the ladies are about ready to go. Time for some picks. Tess likes Antje. Mac?"

McCarthy: "I like this Sparks kid. She has moxie. I'm going with her!"

O'Dell: "Cassie?"

Cassie: "I agree with Tess!"

O'Dell: "And, here we go. We're going to start off boxing at range, and, both of these fighters have plenty of range. Sparks is 5'10" as is Utgaard..."

Cassie: "Utgaard is LISTED at 5'10". Look at her next to Sparks and tell me they're the same height."

O'Dell: "You've got a point, Cassandra Lynn. I'm not sure Utgaard isn't six feet."

Cassie: "Or taller than that."

O'Dell: "Either way, both fighters have plenty of length, and they're using it here in the first. Lots of jabs being exchanged, as the fighters range-find and probe defenses for weaknesses. Not finding a lot of them right now. Both ladies move the hands well, get the gloves out and back. Both looking very sound right now..."

Tess: "And, that's pretty impressive, considering they have five FCBA fights between them, and all of those belong to Utgaard."

O'Dell: "Thirty seconds left in a competitive first. Sparks double-tapping the jab, Utgaard goes jab to the head and then hook to the body. Both ladies getting that left established, and at this weight, with the kind of power these girls have, that's certainly designed to lead to heavy right hands later. For now, there's the bell. Antje close. in the first."

ROUND TWO:

O'Dell: "Right back to ranged work in the second. Neither fighter interested in changing terms, so they're going to stay the same. Utgaard does have a reach advantage here, but Sparks able to negate that with geometry. She's fighting at HER range, meaning she's not short on anything and she's able to get the left home."

McCarthy: "Sooner or later, as you said, Jenny, we're going to begin to see more right hands. I expect sooner."

O'Dell: "But, not quite yet. Oh, the odd right's being dropped, but, neither fighter able to get punches put together yet, and neither forcing the issue, which is a good idea at this weight with the power involved. Make a mistake at a lower weight and you might get a second chance, where, here, you very well may not."

Tess: "That's an excellent point, Jenny, and it's why lots of FCBA experts have said welter is the toughest division in which to be a consistent winner, which makes what girls like Regan, Upton, Freeman, and, of course, Righetti have done even more impressive."

O'Dell: "Coming down the stretch in another competitive round. Ranged warfare has ruled the day, just like in the first, and, just like in the first, it's going to be close when the bell rings. Good exchange there with a couple of rights landing, and there IS the bell. Jordin is going to get it narrowly."

Cassie: "And, we're even at 19."

ROUND THREE:

O'Dell: "Later is coming sooner as we begin the third. Fighters beginning to put punches together now and get more of those heavy right hands going. Antje lands a nice combination, the best of the fight so far, and SPARKS ANSWERS AND THAT WAS A BIG RIGHT HAND! Utgaard a little buzzed right now!"

McCarthy: "She's more than that! That was a Gena Lee Nolin punch right there!"

O'Dell: "Sparks now letting the hands go. Antje covering up, giving ground, as Jordin gets off in a big way. Utgaard in an organized retreat, but she is retreating. Sparks staying sound, not getting wild, but she's throwing punches in bunches looking to capitalize on this. Utgaard trying to stabilize her front..."

Tess: "I like what we're seeing from Jordin. Like you said, Jenny, not getting sloppy, just very effectively looking to finish this thing."

O'Dell: "Twenty seconds left in the round. Sparks trying to bring Antje to the ropes, but she can't do it. Utgaard able to hold canvas now, getting the jab working, shaking the cobwebs in the final seconds. Sparks still in control though, still landing combinations right to the bell, and it's Jordin wide in the third."

Cassie: "And, Sparks now up 29-28."

ROUND FOUR:

O'Dell: "Sparks applying the pressure as we begin the fourth. She's looking to consolidate early, but Antje not going to allow it. Utgaard stopping all that cold, landing some heavy shot of her own and we're right back to the terms we saw in the first two rounds, ranged boxing, only, as we saw earlier in the last round, with more power punches added."

Cassie: "Utgaard is an absolute load in there, Jenny. I mean, that was a BOMB she took the last round, she's already shaken that off and she's right back to work."

O'Dell: "And, she's working effectively, landing good combinations, as is Sparks and DOWN GOES JORDIN! Straight right from Utgaard and Sparks dropped to her rear! Antje to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Six. Jordin to her knees. Seven. Eight. And Sparks on her feet to beat the count..."

Tess: "And, again, I'm impressed with Jordin, because that right hand would have ended a lot of nights."

O'Dell: "Referee gives Sparks the mandatory and waives Antje forward. Utgaard right to work, walking Sparks down behind that big Front Street left jab, dropping in right hands, looking for the one that will end this thing, looking, but not finding. Jordin keeping the guard high, jabbing back in spots, staying off the ropes, running clock well here. Five seconds. Good right from Antje and there's the bell. Big round for Utgaard, but Sparks still in this fight."

McCarthy: "It's 39-36 now, but still time for Sparks to come back."

ROUND FIVE:

O'Dell: "Fifth begins with Antje working forward behind that heavy Front Street jab. Sparks holding her canvas, tying up in there, wrestling around with Utgaard, and we've gone from ranged boxing to close-in combat that quickly. Antje banging body in there and Jordin thumping right back with her, and they're on the other side of the ring and we're hearing those body shots clearly from here."

McCarthy: "This is exactly what Sparks needed to do here, slow this down, get physical.:

O'Dell: "And, it's plenty physical in there right now, with both fighters looking to impose will and neither willing to allow that to happen. Utgaard's corner, I think, might be happier if she got back to range, but, that's not her plan, at least at the moment. Instead, she's tenderizing as much body as she can find, and Jordin's responding in kind."

Cassie" "And, despite the fact that these two can obviously hit a ton, it's going to take quite the investment to do much damage to bodies like these."

O'Dell: "Right now, that investment's being made, because there's some serious leather landing to ribs and midsection right now. Also a lot of tying up and wrestling around. Neither girl easy to move, as you might imagine, so things have slowed way down as we head for the bell in the fifth. There it is. Close round. Sparks."

Tess: "And a big round for Jordin, who's not only cut the lead to 48-46 but gotten herself back in the fight."

ROUND SIX:

O'Dell: "Utgaard wants to work at range again to start the sixth. No surprise, because she heard it from Neve the entire time she was on her stool between rounds. Sparks willing to fight on these terms as well, just as she has been all night. She's using some nice angles to get into her range and get to spots where she can punch."

Tess: "I hate to belabor the point we've been making all night, but Sparks has been impressive. First FCBA fight and she's definitely shown something."

O'Dell: "And, she just turned 27 years old, so she's definitely a girl who could be a factor in the welterweight division for some time if she's able to get rounds. Jordin using the left hand nicely to set up that right. Utgaard responding with a nice combination of her own. Sparks banging right back and ANTJE DROPS HER WITH A RIGHT HAND!"

Cassie: "That was a BRUTAL straight right!"

O'Dell: "Sparks blown to her back. Utgaard to a neutral corner. Count at three. Four. Five. Sparks rolling to her belly. Seven. Eight. Pushing up to hands and knees. Nine. TEN! It's over! Sparks can't get any further than all fours and it's OVER! And your winner by KO6 in one-punch fashion is 'The Scandinavian Stunner' Antje Utgaard!"

McCarthy: "Lucky punch!"

AFTER:

O'Dell: "Let's go up to the ring and Tess Valmore!"

Tess: "I have our winner, Antje Utgaard, and, Antje, that was quite the fight..."

Antje (nodding): "Sure was. She's very tough, very physical. She's not afraid to bang with you. But, when it comes to physical, there's nobody who's got the tools I do. Nobody."

Tess: "What's next for you?"

Antje: "Right back to work. Right back to the gym to get better and get ready for the next fight."
