BBU Lightweight Championship
Malika Menard (CH) vs Jennifer Hawkins
(Foxfire Atlantic Boxing vs Downunder Boxing)
(19-5, 15 KO vs 4-3, 3 KO)
Results: BBU; Story: Vassago

BEFORE: We're ready for our first championship battle here in Cardiff tonight and Foxfire Atlantic's Malika Menard lays her lightweight straps on the line for the second time after stopping Monika Pietrasinska in September of last year. The former beauty pageant stole the headlines with a massive double-decker duell against Douzten Kroes before that and remains the hottest French property in the BBU regardless of what ex-champion Clara Morgane thinks about it.

On the other hand we have the former AWUBA Lightweight champion and one time Miss Universe winner Jennifer Hawkins whose pageant resume exceeds her tonight's opponent but the boxing record is equally as impressive ever since she banished the demons of the Karolina Kurkova rivalry from five years ago. She's fought a reigning BBU champion before - that was Doutzen Kroes no less - but this is her first official BBU championship opportunity which she gained by out-pointing the ever dangerous Sayuki Matsumoto on the Asian soil back in October.

The Welsh crowd seems to be in the blonde's corner tonight, after all the Commonwealth pride is at stake here but Malika can enjoy a fair share of support as well as the trip across the Channel isn't the most demanding of feats for any blood-thirsty boxing fan in the world!

Both girls wear their national colors tonight, Malika in a blue bikini top, white knickers and red gloves. Long dark brown hair tied in a loose bun at the back of her head. Jennifer Hawkins wears a golden bikini top, bright green knickers and golden gloves. Long blonde hair tied in a sleek ponytail. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the lightweight division.

Round 1:
Both girls don't push their luck early on and test out each other in lethargic fashion which is perhaps understandable given the high stakes of this bout. Besides, Jennifer has proven to be a very durable character and the Foxfire Atlantic crew realizes it's nearly impossible to rattle her cage from the word go even though Malika isn't the most patient of fighters and usually displays a chip on her shoulder when performing in front of a hostile audience. However the huge BBU Championship PPV billing lured her away from the friendly atmosphere in Paris and it kinda shows early on as she fails to connect with most of her punches and allows the blonde to work steady looping approach which enables the challenge to settle in her groove down the stretch. Hawkins is slightly taller than the champion and has a superior reach but Denise van Outen reckons she should be pushing with more venom to repeat her epic destruction of Phoebe Tonkin on ANZAC Day Memorial few years back.

Rounds 2 & 3:
Hawkins remains hesitant in pulling the trigger and perhaps she considers the French pageant as a tougher opponent that FCBA-trained Tonkin which is surprising. However Sarah Cumming tweets that Jenny knows Phoebe's strenght like the back of her hand after years of sparring in Melbourne and Malika's massive run of success in the BBU allows her to maintain the fear factor. Some pundits believe that the former Miss Universe realizes this is her last chance for international boxing success with Krystal Forscutt breathing down her neck in the ACB and well, Menard could be the supreme version of Karolina Kurkova who once stopped Hawkins' BBU elite ambitions in more ways than one. However Malika looks equally lethargic in the opening rounds and doesn't attack the fellow pageant in such a frantic fashion she displayed in the Kroes duell. Something's gotta give here soon though and the very patient Cardiff crowd anticipates the storm to descend onto the ring any moment now...

Round 4:
Finally we have some fireworks as the looping Aussie attack finds the brunette's temples and enables Hawkins to step into a close range assault. She swings over the top and beats the champion for a hooking stinger that visibly wobbles Menard's knees and sinks her behind a tight earmuff thereafter. Now the flood gates open and Jennifer barks in her efforts to dominate the younger pageant in a furious display of Aussie pride. Left, left/right and another left hoom pierce the French guard and Malika bellows out onto the ropes unable to respond in any fashion! A clubbing right hook then connects with the boobs and drops Malika's arms even lower so the blonde can NAIL her on the chin with a swift change and another hook on the temple bends the champ sideways. The Cardiff audience roars in support and Hawkins cleans out the subdued brunette afterwards, Malika hangs on buried behind an earmuff cover but she fails to tame the Down Under attack and looks very much rattled at the bell.

Round 5:
Jennifer smells some French blood here and dictates the pace of the fifth round from the on-set, she uses that superior reach into a great advantage and keeps the brunette missing in a hectic response while delivering surgical strikes upstairs. She snaps Menard's head back & forth and soon the champion develops a nasty swelling around the lips which indicates how successful Hawkins is in her championship ambitions tonight! Still, both women show little flexibility and seem to thrive in power punching efforts but the sheer amount of the blonde's striking overwhelms the champion and sends her onto the ropes come the final minute. Jennifer seeks that back-breaking knockdown but one can't dispatch 'Le Grande Malika' so easily and she has to rely on pure numbers to wear down her resistance. This was a slow-burning affair to begin with but now the 'Green & Gold' twitter is ready to explode as Hawkins marches on towards the title and has the French beauty more than confused at half-distance.

Round 6:
Foxfire Atlantic's head trainer Sophia Myles urges the champion to show that Mediterranean edge in the ring but Malika claims she knows what she's doing. If the brunette is out to set up a trap here anytime soon, she needs to make her presence felt against the Aussie flooding fast because Hawkins charges at the fellow pageant with no sympathy whatsoever and beats her for another feisty tangle reaching out for the swollen lips again. However this time Menard digs deep into the blonde's tummy and effectively headbutts the Commonwealth girl before blasting her on the jaw with her best punch of the night soon afterwards. Hawkins refuses to step back and catch her breath but she skims off the temple in a follow up attempt and eats a hooking drive on the chest which freezes her in the center of the ring and Malika hauls in a cracking uppercut on the jaw to make her opponent scowl in pain for the first time tonight. A flurry of French leather then clatters the boobs and Jennifer spins back to the ropes where she tries to swing back into contention but Malika ducks underneath and harpoons her solar plexus before adding another vicious hook on the jaw! Hawkins tails off behind the high guard but remains trapped and the champion cleans out the ribcage to secure her most impressive round of the night!

Round 7:
Some experts said that Jennifer Hawkins is a better fighter than Polish veteran Joanna Krupa who defeated Menard on the Miami beach under FCBA rules last November but she seems to be carried away by that mid-fight dominance and lacks the poise to embrace a furious French attack here in the seventh. The Queen is truly not dead yet and she bullies the blonde's rack with an impressive close range drive as suddenly Hawkins becomes erratic in her high swinging and loses the momentum which allows the brunette to stack her up in the corner. Both women dish out a heavy assault upstairs and soon Jennifer's lips are equally as swollen as her rival's but the sheer production favors the younger pageant who sinks the former AWUBA champion soft knees come the final minute when a swift change downstairs punishes the liver area and forces Hawkins into a clinching safety.

Round 8:
Both women settle in a head hunting pursuit as they keep seeking that break-through punch let alone a proper series but Malika now seems to find a second wind in her sails and outworks the older pageant in close range before repeatedly dropping her on the heels and driving back to the ropes in the proccess. Jennifer still swings along but misses too many easy connections and looks a little gassed out which fuels the brunette's efforts and despite a late scramble along the ropes, a chopping series on the ribcage keeps the Aussie tourist under the cosh and allows the champion to steal another round. It's still anyone's for the taking but Denise van Outen reckons the blonde's alleged lead on the cards is almost wiped out at this stage.

Round 9:
Jennifer departs the aggressive approach after losing another opening tangle and for once decides to bide her time in mid-distance apparently still having full confidence in the scorecards. However Malika doesn't waste any second in rallying back into championship mode and keeps landing those valuable single strikes to keep her slowly moving foe at bay. This is mind over matter stuff now as it becomes clear two worthy competitors have met here in Cardif tonight and any late knockout drama seems all but impossible. Still, Hawkins remains in shutdown mode and responds with a single punch for every three or four combo sequence from the champ and sags on the ropes in the final minute looking the worst to wear. She clinches the younger pageant but soaks up too much ribcage assault to even salvage a draw according to BBU TV's commentary team.

Round 10:
It's the last round now and Menard accepts the fact she can't knock the heroic Aussie down anymore and basically avoids getting hit with a Hail Mary punch as the blonde threatens to deliver more overhand swings during a hectic opening minute struggle. Eventually both girls switch on the after-burners and wrestle each other around the ring thereafter however Jennifer finds room to punish the brunette's guts late on and overpowers her into the Down Under corner where she lashes out on the breasts with half-uppercuts, suddenly the Cardiff crowd smells an Aaron Rodgers-like comeback and Menard's knees bend awkwardly as she's rendered breathless right at the bell with the Aussie challenger coming out on top of a phone booth exchange that even Denise van Outen didn't see coming. The bell rings and the referee has to pull the blonde off the champion in rather hectic fashion - both girls raise their arms in the air to indicate how gruesome and competitive this bout truly was but we can only have one winner - and one BBU lightweight champion. The tension builds as we head to the scorecards...

Judges score the bout 97-96 for Menard, 97-96 for Hawkins and 97-96 for your winner through SPLIT decision... and STILL the unified BBU lightweight champion Malika Menard!!!

AFTER: A titanic effort from both these ladies who both deserve to be called champions but it's 'Le Grande Malika' who emerges victorious from yet another almighty scrap and must be considered as next to kin in the pound-for-pound rankings. Who knows, if Jenna Coleman goes down to Emily Browning in the Main Event, perhaps Malika will be crowned as the new P4P leader by the members of the Real View media? BBU TV's Denise van Outen reckons that could indeed become the case since Menard's mind over matter style of boxing must win her a widespread praise despite her brief FCBA career failing to match Coleman's numbers up to date.

Both women are truly exhausted and embrace each other in a lenghty hug after the verdict is announced, the crowd fully supports their efforts and allthough Jennifer still earns the bigger ovation, the French champion can walk away from Cardiff with her head held extremely high. There's immediate talk of a rematch - and that's an old story for Malika and the Foxfire Atlantic crew - but the BBU TV team agrees with those prospects. Jennifer Hawkins deserves another shot at the trophy and well, she's far more respected around the UK boxing community than Krystal Forscutt who's won little friends over the years with her street fighting approach that was intended to wreck her opponents mentally as well as physically. And only the likes of Samia Ghadie, Cheryl Cole or Lucy Pinder can get away with such obnoxious tactics and still maintain their BBU folk hero status!

Final result: Malika Menard def. Jennifer Hawkins - Split Decision.
