Before: “I realize that some people question my decision to stay active in the fight game,” Jeri Ryan tells the press, “but I still want to do it and as long as I can get satisfaction from going rounds with an opponent, I will continue. As for this fight, it’s been over 12 years since I last fought Jen Garner and I beat her in 2004. Took her Lightweight Title. No title on the line for this one, but it would be very pleasing to take out a ‘kid’ like her. It would show my critics ‘ther old girl’ still has what it takes to win. That’s what I’m out to prove with this fight.” (Jeri says this last with a smile and everyone chuckles).

Jennifer Garner is gracious and smiling as ever when she comes to the podium: “I don’t remember much about our last fight except waking up and realizing you’d got me with that big right hand of yours. Of course, that only evened things up, I got a decision on her in 2003 and, incidentally took the title away from her. As I recall you were not happy about that.”

“No I wasn’t,” Jeri replied coolly, ‘it’s one of the reasons I enjoyed taking it back from you.”

“Then I guess we’re fighting to decide who is the better fighter. Not to sound critical, Jeri, but you have waited an awfully long time to ask for it,” Jen says.

Jeri shrugs: “It’s a footnote in the record books, but better late than never.”

“I wish Charlize felt like that,” Jen grumbled, letting slip her feelings about Charlize Theron who has shown little interest in revisiting their long series of fights that climaxed with Charlize winning a Best of 7 series back in 2008.

“Oh don’t worry about her. I’ll give you all you can handle and I’ve got enough power in my right to get me the win I want,” Jeri said with assurance.

“I think I’ve got more than you can handle,” Jen said. “See you there.”

Come the fight, Jeri Ryan is there in a red bra and panties. Red thigh-high stockings. Red gloves and booties. Jennifer in black bra and panties. Black fishnet thigh-high Black gloves and bootiess with white laces. Jeri has her hair pulled back in ponytail. Jen has opted for an elaborate battle braid. No nonsense ring instructions. Quick swipe of the gloves and the two are in their corners. The bell sounds.

R1: Veterans get right in together close and start banging. Short, strong left and right punches strike hard to belly, ribs and breast. Jen and Jeri looking each other in the eyes with determination. Smacking sound of leather on wet flesh soon can be heard as the sweat rolls down the straining bodies. Fascinating to watch two mature women giving and taking such punishment with little sign of faltering. Jeri gets some effective shots into Jen’s chin late in the round to knock brunette’s head back and slow her counters. Jeri then starts moving Jen back with the steady thump of punching to the body and Jen is slowly giving ground. Intense action right down to the bell. Cold looks exchange as they separate and referee has to step in and advise them to move along. Round goes to Jeri Ryan by a close margin.

R2: Jen showing more movement this time as she tries to get Jeri to chase her. Jeri in pursuit, but trying to draw Jen into more close action. Jen very accurate punching from a distance has Jeri’s face getting puffed up and shiny. Jeri charging in but gets driven back by strong Jennifer Garner jab and then Jen follows up with some hard pounding to the belly and rack. Jeri not liking being on the defensive, but Jen able to keep her bottled up and steadily banged to the bell. More cold looks at the bell and this time there is exchange of pushes! Referee in quickly to break it up. Wow, guess it isn’t just rookies who get worked up in the midst of a fight!

R3: Crowd seems to be enjoying these veterans showing some youthful hot temper and cheers lustily as the two turn to brawling in the third stanza of the bout. Jen Garner gets in the first knocks, banging Jeri’s head back and making her gams quiver. However Jeri Ryan brings that right banging off the Garner jaw and suddenly Jen’s the one with shaky stems. Jen shakes it off and comes back. Now there is plenty of that look-her-the-eye-and-see-if-she blinks hard hitting rights and lefts to the body. Neither fighter giving ground this time and they just seem to be throwing more and more energy into the punches. Jeri’s got a nasty cut in the right eyebrow, but there is an angry red swelling around all of Jen’s right as face punches are brought in for quick, damaging strikes. Late in the round there is a furious battle of jugg jolting punches as rival bra cups come under sustained attack. Again they are firing away with heat all the way to the bell. This time they don’t bother to stop and referee has to jump. Stern warnings as the official tries to keep this under control!

R4: Jeri striking quickly this round with shots off Jen’s head that set up a couple of nice uppies to the chin. Jen’s legs looking rubbery as she backs out of there with Jeri in free-swinging pursuit. Jeri clearly trying to land her right in hopes of getting Jen down to the canvas, but Jen not that obliging. Jen ducking and trying to counter. Jeri finally giving up on the blockbusters shots scores with that right to the body until she’s got Jen all hunched up and barely countering. Round goes down as an wide win for Jeri. The ref makes sure to put himself between the two after the bell, but can’t keep angry looks from being exchanged.

R5: Jen Garner looking fired up as she comes off her stool and heads right for Jeri Ryan. Jeri more than ready to take her on and there is a vigorous exchange as they circle at mid-ring, but then Jen goes hard to the belly with punches that send shockwaves through Jeri’s body. Jeri shuddering as Jen follows up with driving straight rights and lefts into her juggs. Jeri looking dazed by the impacts and lets her defenses sag. All Jen needs to pour punches into Jeri’s head. Jeri trying to back away, but she can’t escape as her head is swatted from right to left and left to right. Then Jen leaps in with a flying right uppercut to the chin as Jeri is backing away. The blows lifts Jeri off her feet and flings her into the ropes. She bounces off and Jen is waiting to nail her with another right to the chin. DOWN GOES JERI! Jeri just puddling straight down into a steaming heap of knocked out blonde! Refree doesn’t even bother to count as he raises Jen’s arm in victory.
THE WINNER: JENNIFER GARNER DEFEATS JERI RYAN KO5!

After: “It got pretty hot between us out there,” Jen Garner tells reporters as she watches Jeri Ryan revived and helped to her feet. “Just because we’re cougars doesn’t mean we don’t get the desire to dominate an opponent. She wanted to take me down. I wanted to take her down. I won. (Jen sees Jeri looking at her): “Hey, how you doing, Jer?”

“Been better,” Jeri says, her swollen jaw making it hard to speak, “but at least I gave you a black eye to remember me by.”

Jen instinctively touches the swollen flesh around her right eye and winces: “Yeah, you got me good, Ryan. I just got you better.”

“Yeah, unfortunately,” Jeri says and then is led away by her training crew.

“It was tough,” Jen concludes, “but I realized how much I still enjoy it. Sure beats sitting behind a desk, but I’ll just wait and see what opportunities come my way. Wonder what Cat Bell is doing these days?”

You never quite know what you’ll get when two senior fighters get into action. Sometimes they just try to wear one another down. Sometimes they still have enough left in the tank for a slugfest like this one. Great to watch Jen and Jeri in action even though it is past their primes, but it shows younger fans some idea of what they could do back in the day and also bring good boxing memories to long-time fans. Who knows whether either will go now, but for tonight, they gave the crowd a good, exciting 5 rounds of boxing action.
