DANIELLE CAMPBELL VS CAMILA MENDES
Results: Lookout Writing: Archer
Danielle: 22 YO, 5’3 (1.60 m), 11-5-0, 10 KO since 2014, Pretty Little Punchers
Camila: 23 YO, 5’2 (1.59 m), 1-0-0, 1 KO since 2017, Free Agent

Before: This will only be Camila Mendes’ second official FCBA fight, but the RIVERDALE actress is trying not to show it in the pre-fight.

“I was surprised when Danielle’s people go in touch with me. After all, she has more at risk in this fight than I do,” Camila says coolly. “If I lose it will be no surprise, but if I beat her—well, even I know that it’s a big deal for a rookie on her second fight to beat someone about the same age with 16 fights under her belt. (I looked you up, Dani: you aren’t after my panties, are you?” (She says this last with a naughty smile).

Danielle Campbell seems to have adopted the role of “Wise Old Veteran” (even though she’s a year younger than Camila): “Now, Camila, you need to understand, you take a trophy like that because it memorializes something special. The undies I’ve won—and lost—are part of my glorious feud with The Wannabees. You, I am afraid, would just be one of the many obscure rookies that have been popping up lately. Though I will admit my undies would be an honored addition to any opponent’s trophy wall.”

Camila giggles: “You are sounding so conceited.”

Danielle smiles: “I am just teasing you, I liked the way you beat Jane Levy. I want to see for myself if you have what it takes to compete around here.”

“I want to assure you I do,” Camila said firmly. “The only trophy I really want is a second W on my fight history.”

“You are welcome to try,” DC says agreeably, “but I intend to give you your first L in your ‘Loss’ column.”

Not a lot of heat at the presser, but fans of young flyweights are curious to see what happens when these two brunette young fighters collide. Fight night fight night finds Camila in black short fighting trunks with a yellow CAMILA MENDES in flowing script across the seat and a yellow sports bra, Black gloves and boots with yellow faces. Hair in a battle braid. Danielle is in red short fighting trunks with a navy blue sports bra. Red boots and gloves with navy blue laces. Danielle’s hair pulled back into a simple ponytail with a red scrunchy to hold it in place. Cami and Dani look eager to go, but are calm during ring instructions and swipe gloves in the approved fashion. They are promptly back to their corners. The bell ring. This is on!

R1: Danielle out very aggressively towards Camila, pounding hard to the midsection and then suddenly shifting to tag the rookie’s chin. Camila hanging in, jabbing back, making DC pay for her aggression. Dani getting hit hard to the jaw and then gets her belly hooked with the right. Dani looking uncomfortable with the impact of those rights, shifts her feet and goes after Camila’s head again. Bouncing punches off the skull have Camila’s battle braid dancing, but the rookie gets some uppercuts into Dani’s chin to get her ponytail a-jumpin’. Danielle then mounts a sustained body attack, thoroughly working over Camila’s breast, ribs and stomach. Camila jabbing back defiantly, she’s getting some lumps to appear on DC’s cheekbones, but is slowly driven back as the bell sounds. Intense action pleases crowd and they are both cheered as they return to their corners. Judges give the round to DC by a close margin.

R2: Camila shows some good footwork this round as she keeps Danielle off balance with sudden moves then striking hard with the right to the head. DC looking to get close and put more pressure on the elusive Cami, but she can’t seem to do it. Then Camila comes in and bangs DC to the belly to drop her guard and then attacks her to the jaw. DC now in retreat with Cami dancing around her, just popping her opponent with quick rights and lefts. Dani looking increasingly flustered, though she does manage some countering as they fight down to the bell. Camila wins the round wide. She must know it as she smiles widely going back to her stool. Dani not looking at all happy as she goes back to her own corner.

R3: Dani comes out swinging, but so does Camila. Really exciting exchange of leaps and lunges and they circle each other blazing away. Crowd just loving it as the acrobatics result in head shots that send first Dani and then Cami staggering, but both return and go right back at it. Over the last half of the round, the two move in close for dynamic toe to toe punching. Cami churning punches into Dani’s body, while Cami’s torso getting swabbed with leather impacts, but neither young woman will budge. Late in the round, they find each other’s chin and make their heads bob repeatedly. Still, neither will give way and they only stop punching when the referee jumps in after the bell. The two of them look at each other with foggy eyes as the sweat drops off their ringing bodies, Then they turn and make their way slowly to their corners. Judges call this round a DRAW.

R4: Camila shows toughness by being the quicker young fighter to throw off last round’s grueling combat and come rushing across the ring at a somewhat slower Danielle. Cami brings that right crashing into Dani’s jaw and DC goes stumbling away. Camilla has to scramble to get back in front of the reeling DC and try to take her down. DC just covering up and backing away. Camila dogged in pursuit, but Dani proves elusive. Camila landing punches to Dani’s shoulders and off her skull, but these aren’t the finishing punches she wants. Finally, she is able to cut off the ring and slowly drive the covered up DC into the ropes. More frustration for Camila as DC huddles against the strands, but Camila can’t get at her properly. Then DC starts clinching. Camila looking frustrated tries to grapple DC back to the ropes, but referee breaks it up. Round ends in a shutout for Camila, but she looks ready to stomp her foot in frustration as the banged up DC gives her a tired smile. Instead, Cami pivots on her heel and marches back to her corner. DC slow getting back to her own corner. She looks relieved just to have survived Camila’s onslaught.

R5: Camila looking vexed during the break and it is obvious she wants to finish the job as she jumps off her stool at the bell. Cami zips across the ring, but Dani is waiting for her with a lunging left hook to the belly and crushing right to the cheek. Stars seem to explode in in Camila Mendes’ brain as she comes to a sudden halt with a “wha-happened?” look on her face. DC smashes her head around with the left to the jaw and then a right. Camila staggering back, has her gloves up around her face as DC then brings leather fury to the rookie’s body. Camila backing up, doubled over and then getting punches to the head over her guard. Camila moving backwards but without much skill and Dani is able to work Camila to the ropes. Dani looking fired up, shoves Cami into the ropes with her left hand then leans her forearm against Cami’s hunches up body while pounding away to the body with the right. Referee breaks this up and then Camila starts some desperate clinching. Dani able to keep punching belly even in clinches, Cami ends up sitting in the ropes, face in gloves and just surviving to bell. Danielle looking quite pleased with herself as Camilla peels herself off the strands with an ashen-faced blank look. Cami rubbery legged to her corner. Looking back it seems surprising she took so much and never went down. Still, it’s a shutout round for Danielle Campbell.

R6: Camila’s corner people do their best to revive their fighter during the break, bur Camila is hunched up defensively as the new round gets started. DC circles around her clearly hurt opponent, sizing her up with quick rights and lefts, and generally working to keep Cami struggling to react. Danielle completes her inspection tour and then then strikes hard at Camila’s midsection. Hard hooks, with Danielle setting the feet to get more power into the shots and Cami’s quickly tipping forward. Then DC begins slamming punches against Cami’s defensive gloves as the beleaguered Cami is trying to back away. Effort rewarded when Danielle able to force her punches through Camilla’s protective screen and bring those hard hooks into the rookie’s face. Camilla knocked back on her heels, trying to keep her guard up, but Dani easily able to bring right and left uppercuts crashing into Cami’s chin. Rapid-fire uppies too much her the rooke. She crumbles AND DOWN GOES CAMILA. Camila landing on back, knees up, but arms out-flung as she rolls her head from side to side. Danielle to neutral corner as referee counts. Camila straightens her legs and tries to push herself up with her hands. She almost gets to a sitting position when she falls over sideways to curl up in defeat as the count goes past her.
THE WINNER: DANIELLE CAMPBELL DEFEATS CAMILA MENDES KO6

After: Danielle smiling wearily as Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson and Sasha Pieterse crowd around to congratulate her. DC chatting with her stablemates as her gloves are removed, but she’s keeping an eye on Camila Mendes who has been helped to her stool where the medical staff is checking her over. When the examination is done, the medical people chat with Camila’s trainer while Camila herself sits slumped forward, a white towel over her head. Danielle head across the ring.

Camila hears someone coming and looks up: “Oh, it’s you. Of course, you want to walk me. Give me a second.”

Camila tries to stand up, but teeters and has to sit down. Dani reaches out to steady her.

“Let’s save the walk for another fight. You’re darned good for someone in her second fight. I know it’s hard to find management, but if anyone asks me, you got a lot of potential to make my fighting life miserable,” Dani said in a cheerful tone that made the hurting Camila laugh.

“I would like nothing better than to make you or someone else’s fighting life miserable,” Cami said. “You were better than me tonight. I admit that.”

“Not by much,” Dani told her. “I am going to have to raise my game by the next time we meet. I hope there will be a next time.”

“Me, too, but I want to be the winner next time—it feels a whole lot better!” Camila said with a tired smile.

“I know just what you mean,” Dani said and the two exchanged hugs, then Dani headed back for her own corner.

“Oh, Dani!” Camilla called out. “I want you to remember me and this fight. Expect something from me in a day or two.”

Danielle looked puzzled, but word got out the next day that Danielle was sent the fresh washed and ironed short yellow fighting trunks that Camila had worn in the fight.

There was supposedly a handwritten note included: “SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY! HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON—CAMILA MENDES.” It was said Dani made the sure to place the trunks in a central place on her Puncher trophy wall.

Very nice battle of young flyweights. Camila Mendes not quite able to finish Danielle Campbell when she had her chance. Danielle made no such mistake when her opportunity came and knocked the rookie out. As Camila herself had remarked in the prefight, it was no disgrace to lose to someone of Danielle’s experience, but it remains hard for any unmanaged fighter to find winnable fights. What happens next with Camila Mendes is an open question, but Danielle Campbell, with PLP management behind her, seems to be slowly emerging as a force among the young members of the Flyweight Division.
