Before: “She’s been a bit of an obsession,” admits Claire of Michelle in preflight. “She’s constantly in my way, constantly getting the nod in close fights that I felt I won--it’s frustrating, It’s no secret that HISC would have traded half our stable to get her, I mean, how’s that supposed to make me feel? So I’m motivated--personally and professionally--to give Michelle the beating of her life in this fight.” Danes putting money where her mouth is--even shelling out to get some Kelly Packard sparring time, picking one arch rival’s brains to humble the other. Williams smiling, confident through media sessions, often making the roller-derby “belt” gesture at her waist--she’s title-hungry. “Poor Claire, Girl has this image of herself as Miss Superiority, miss Yale, and the rest of us are a bunch of hicks she can pock apart at will. Then, I just pound her out and she wonders what the hell happened, I’ll rough her up just like I always do, wear her down, and takes this thing--it’s not up to Claire, what happens to her in our fights.” Mish in black push up and panties, white lace trim, Claire in red bra style bikini.

During R1: Slap ;n slip Claire--front foot in a bucket as she pivots, bending at the waist, sliding to the left. Pesky, jabbing, stinging straight rights on the lips--Danes poking away from outside, just getting re-acquainted with Mish. Williams disdainful--getting her face spanked and laughing at the impact, but she’s not productive--just following Claire around the ring, hands at chest height, unable to get off as Danes wheels and deals. Classy shutout CD.

R2: Clair mixing in her ingredients: 3 parts jabs; 2 parts body work, whippy right-lefts slick on the waist; 1 part stinging straight right hand, meant to get respect, back Mish up., Williams no longer grinning--tuff, tuff body rips have her stopped--banging, pinpoint rights off the face have Williams moody, on her heels, Crescendo of punching in the dying moments--Claire washing Williams’ flanks, rolling to her gut, checking her chin with clapping lefts and rights--slick flurry has Mish wobbly butt, blinking at the belt, Back to back shutouts, Claire--Danes back to her stool with a business-like scowl.

R3: Mish just not getting a good jump in these rounds--she closes with her hands around chest level--Danes starts to track her jabs to the face, channeling Mish into  punching lanes and ringing her up that drilling right hand. Dane with great timing tonight--easing to her left, dipping under Williams’ brawling, wide strokes, but basically keeping Mish’s guns holstered with pre-emptive pokes and deft movement. Not a shutout, but Danes; ring generalship in complete control through 3.

R4: Danes dictating--Mish taking. Williams starting to gamble, but she’s just not able to body up and roughhouse--Danes melting away, sliding to the side, or lugging Mish that starting straight right--Williams backing up repeatedly, shaking her head as Claire fits punches in. Beautiful move midway through, Danes: Mish misses a right hand over the top--Claire step steps, hand in Williams’ back and guides the former champ prettily into the ropes. Williams growing more and more frustrated, swinging wildly, losing discipline--Claire’s camped out inside her opponent’s head and loving it.

R5: Mish finally takes the first minute--stepping strong, swinging rights and lefts at Claire’s ribs, steadily working her backward, Danes retreating in good order sliding back from Williams, taking punishment, but still calculating--she springs her trap as Mish commits fully to the attack. Second minute--Danes rotating her torso, gloves at her lips, back to the ropes--she curls into the right uppercut, butts Mish the left shoulder, picks her up the right uppy again and Williams starts to stagger back. Danes off the ropes, eyes hard as she steps forward, keeps her elbows in, gets her body behind ripping left and right uppercuts, shoulder-butting, banging Mish toe to toe across the ring, Williams back hits ropes, face in shock: Claire Danes just got respect by punching Mish clan on the chin, backing her the length of the ring and hurting her. Final minute a workmanlike Danes cleans up on discouraged Mish--Williams covered, bent forwards--Danes slashing and licking at tender waist meat, getting in under those elbows, lathering away to the bell, Danes pumped, chests up, forces eye contact--Mish shook u0p, both eyes starting to swell, hurting in her body.

R6: Claire does defensive, takes the round off--Mish gets back in the fight, Danes no longer turning her girl midring and whittling away at her--Claire retreats to the ropes, sets up tight, rotating torso-on hips to slip and roll punches., Mish able to square up, grind her forehead into Claire’s chest or shoulders, work her over downstairs. Williams using all her tricks, reaching under a Danes arm to grab the ropes and hem her in for marauding punches from the opposite mitt; ruff tousle rubbing, getting Claire’s face back, opening up the body; mauling shoulder and elbow work, pushing and propping when she’s not punching. Round to Mish--bounce back in her step en route to her corner--if she’s going to make a move to rein Claire in yet again, now’s the time.

R7: Claire slams the door: shutout. Danes back to the slap n’ slip, dragging that front foot, chipping, flicking and stinging the jab, dropping straight right hands square to Mish’s punished face, hooking Nish behind the elbow and pivoting to the left sidestepping neatly. Williams increasingly shopworn, demoralized--she’s missing a lot of shots now, discipline failing, form getting loose as she sprays ill-advised punches, none connecting. You Can’t wipe the smile off Claire’s face at the bell--she touches Mish up head to hip, halts Williams rally, and helps herself to a chunk of Williams buttock to send TE stalwart back to her corner in style.

R8: Brilliant pace-management from Claire--she knows Mish is trying to rally. Comes out SMOKING to take wind from sails directly. Danes turning puncher, brawling Mish back into her corner, shelling her hooks and crosses--Williams stunned by the ferocity, dukes up at her temples leaning back into the turnbuckles. Danes shifts focus from Mish’s rigid guard to dig gut a triumphant pumping cluster of rights and lefts, finally stepping out with a hungry leer--Williams distraught, lowering her guard to stare at Claire with sheer disbelief, Rest of the round pretty tactical--Danes dictating with her jab, luring Mish forward, sidestepping to turn her at the ropes then lure her back the other way, Williams coming forward, but badly disrupted--she’s tentative, puffy, hurting and getting shamed through 8.

R9: Claire Danes helps herself to Mish Williams, beats her bell to bell in one of the most satisfying moments of he champion’s career. Mish thoroughly bamboozled, grinding her teeth, dukes at  her temples, torso stooped forward and Claire just taking whatever she wants. Danes licking to flank, snatching punches in under the elbows. Danes slide-pivoting to her left, prepping Mish a little touching right in the gloves then HOOKING that midriff, going body with a little rolling squall of lefts and rights before slinking to the side. Danes hooking trembling Mish midriff, then licking chin the left uppercut--Claire punching smooth, without fear--nothing coming back. And Danes taking jug: stepping-to, rolling her shoulders, taking great glorious pancaking strafing runs as Mish leans into it, suffering, biting down on self-betraying whimpers. Smoldering eye contact at the bell--Claire’s heaping  on, relishing every point-scoring punch.

R10: Danes grinning, batting out a pawing jab, right hand low, easing to her left. Busted up Mish crouching, dukes at her chin, stalking Claire so calm, so poised, putting the polishing touches on her masterpiece and CLAIRE GOES DOWN!!! Mish timing the carefree Danes jab, rockets a sudden right overtop and drops the champ to her back! Crowd roaring to its feet--Claire a-swoon and it’s OVER…NO! Claire scrambling to her feet, swaying woozy at the ropes, shaking her head--eyes watery with the thought of another improbable Mish Williams  comeback. Gut check rime for Claire Danes: she takes 8, digs in and ON COMES MISH! Williams squaring up and HEAVING I overhand rights, wide lefts--Claire supple at the waist, collected--bending low, slipping blows and RIPPING back with counters! Danes getting the better of it--rolling Williams’ thunder, tucking into creamy Mish gut, cracking those ribs, checking the chin--sneaky, slicing counters out of the torso roll scoring on Mish and WILLIAMS GOES WOBBLY BUTT! Mish backing away in stupor, eyes uncomprehending and HERE COMES CLAIRE! Danes flat footed, jabbing as Williams pulls straight back and LABELLING her hated rival a right hand on the teeth. Mish driven at the stagger to the ropes, hitting hard, covering up hurt and Danes mops up! Claire bearing her teeth, punching on hate and pride at the point--goes at Mish with vindictive, licking  strokes to the flanks and midsection. Bell sounds, Claire’s still sampling--ref pulls her away to delirious applause from the audience. UD10 WIDE, Claire Danes.

After: She’s done it--at long last, Claire’s given Michelle a decisive, brutal, one-sided thumping. Williams dazed, in shock distracted as her gloves are removed, Danes jubilant, getting hugged and feted in her corner--it’s a glorious, glorious moment. What was different this time? In the 5th, Claire turned back a hard-charging mish and came back to win the round, backing Williams up and hurting her in the process: respect, finally, from Mish. In the 7th, Claire halted the Mish rally, not letting Williams gather any more momentum. And the 10th--Danes suddenly hitting the canvas, fight in doubt and Claire won every second of the remaining time, hammering Mish into stupor by the end. Portman, Packard, now Danes--pendulum swings back to boxers at flyweight as all take their turn running Mish ragged. “It’s over,” proclaims a triumphant Claire in post fight, “the Mish Williams reign of terror is over, She’ll never be the same after tonight--I saw it in her eyes, She’s done, and I’m the one who finished her.” ouch. Top it off--Claire, flanked by Eliza, Kelly Packard, with Rachel Stevens (key sparring partner in Danes’ camp) in behind, strut to the TE corner where a grinning Danes can brandish the belts and openly gloat while her cronies hoot taunts. Williams finally pulled from the ring by a protective Syren--no reason why the brave little battler has to take this kind of thing from these shrews.
