Kate Upton vs. Bridget Regan
(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

No hype necessary for this one. These are, no doubt, two of the top five welters on the planet, and, arguably, two of the top three. And, as you'd expect in a contest between two fighters of this caliber, neither is exactly lacking confidence.

"Bridget's about as good as it gets," admits Kate with a nod. "But, I AM as good as it gets. As good as it gets among models. As good as it gets in JMDD. And, as good as it gets at welterweight. And, I'm going to prove that. Again."

"Kate's about as physical a fighter as we've got in the FCBA," says Bridget, "But, she's not just a brawler. She can box, too. But, you know who else fits that description? That's right. Bridgy Regs. And, she hits like a truck. But, you know who hits even HARDER? That's right. Bridgy Regs. But, shhh! Don't tell Kate. Let's let her find that out for herself."

ROUND ONE:

Both of these fighters have been known to eschew the feeling out process at times, but, not tonight. When you're in against an opponent of the caliber of either of these fighters, especially one who can end your night with one punch, well. Feeling out is generally a good idea. So, that's exactly what we see in the first. Both ladies are probing with those long jabs. Both are looking for openings where they can fit a hard right hand. And, both are moving the feet, moving the head and hands, playing solid defense. Nobody's going to go all "let's just throw dukes and see what happens" in this one. Because, that would be stupid, and neither of these girls are stupid. Instead, it's good, technical fighting for the entire three minutes, and, when we get to the bell, there's not much in it at all. But, it's Kate who's managed to do just enough to claim the points and the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

A little more offense in the second stanza. Kate wants to come forward behind that heavy left jab, but Bridget's not having any. Instead, Regan enforces the distance with her own jab. She's stopping Kate, holding her on the outside, and then dropping right hands on her. Upton is insistent on taking canvas. For awhile. But, about midway through the round, she realizes it isn't happening and sets up at range to begin responding to gun platform stuff with gun platform stuff. Last half of the round is good, two-way boxing with plenty of hard right hands landed, as each fighter works hard to set up her offense. If there's any question as to why these two are at the very top of the welter elite, it's answered in those 90 seconds. There's simply not much either of them can't do in a boxing ring, and, when you add that ability to their frightening power, you've got the prototype of what you want in this division. At the bell, it's close again, but Bridget's first 90 seconds allow her to claim the points and even this thing at 19.

ROUND THREE:

Bridgy Regs getting in rhythm early. She's moving the feet, banging out that hard left, stopping Kate with it, and then blasting her with right hands. Upton firing back with hard, accurate stuff, but its Regan who's fighting lead now, and that's not what Upton wants, not at all. Kate likes to call the match, but, Bridget's simply not allowing it. She's getting off first, and she's getting accurate leather where she wants it. She's not blowing Upton out of this thing by a long shot, but, it's the older woman who's getting the better of the exchanges, slowly building a lead. Late in the round, Kate tries to flip the script. She tries walking forward again, looking to get Bridget on her back foot. Doesn't work. Again, Regan enforces distance with the left hand and forces Kate back to the gun platform. At the bell, Regan's taken her second straight and pulled into a 29-28 lead.

ROUND FOUR:

Kate determined to come forward. She's taking hard shot, but, she's got the hands up, she's moving the head and feet, she's angling, doing everything she can to get past Regan's defenses, and, finally, it begins to work. Upton's getting to middle distances, banging with Bridget. But, Regan can play this game, too. Bridgy Regs bangs right back and we get a series of even, ferocious exchanges until...BRIDGET IS ROCKED! Upton a hard right and Regan staggered, nearly going down! And, now Kate brings the big guns to bear, hammering her rival back into the ropes and giving her a thorough going over for the remainder of the round. You can, likely, count on one hand the number of fighters who'd have still been standing at the end of 80 seconds of absolute hammering at the hands of Kate Upton. But, one of those fingers would have represented Bridget Regan. The brunette is clearly wobbly on the way back to her corner, but she's still on her feet. The round goes to Upton wide, though, and we're even at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Upton looking to finish now. She's got a dangerous opponent in trouble and she knows what could happen if she lets her off the hook. So, Kate's forward immediately, letting the hands go, banging away at Regan, backing her up and GETTING HURT! It's a beautiful right hand counter from Regan and Upton is GOBSMACKED! The blonde wobbles, nearly goes down and ON COMES REGAN! Bridget now the one letting the hands go, hammering away at the blonde beauty, giving her a licking to both head and that lovely, sturdy body. Upton covering, backing, clearly in desperate trouble. Quickly, she's literally on the ropes and Regan is letting everything go in an effort to end this thing. But. Just like Upton in the fourth, Bridget is going to be frustrated by the sturdiness of the legs opposing her. The referee looks and looks and Regan searches and searches for the off switch, but Kate does enough to keep the former at bay and the later can't flip the switch. At the bell, it's Regan wide and with the 48-47 lead, but Upton's still standing.

ROUND SIX:

Dark times for Kate the Great. Very, very dark. One of the last things most fighters get a handle on is finishing. Often, they're veterans before they get really good at it. Bridget Regan is both a veteran and REALLY good at it, as her clinical destruction of Upton in round six clearly demonstrates. Bridget is not hurried. She's not sloppy. She uses that hard left jab to set up blistering, hurting right hands, piling on the punishment. The game blonde fights back here and there, but, she's mostly taking, mostly hanging on, mostly trying to run some clock and get some leg back under her. But, Regan won't give her any time or any space. Instead, she keeps up a steady, heaving shelling that leaves the blonde all but out on her feet. But. On her feet, Kate stays. Bridget still can't find the switch. But, she finds just about everything else, and, at the bell, Upton's standing, but scuffed, wobbly, and trailing 58-56.

ROUND SEVEN:

Regan right after Kate early, but Bridget's looking a little arm-weary after two straight rounds of hammering away at the blonde. Upton able to hold her ground now and throw back, and things quickly evolve into more of the two-way ranged boxing we saw in the early rounds. Upton's still not moving as well as she usually does, though, and that's allowing Regan to gain the advantage. Bridget landing a higher percentage of shot, even though her work rate is down significantly from the past two rounds. But, in yet another example of the advantages that accrue to a talented veteran, Bridget does enough. She doesn't take the round off. She just scales back to allow for the refill of the magazines. But, she's still out-scoring her blonde rival, though not by much. But, again, it's enough. At the bell, Regan's claimed the points again, albeit narrowly. And, she's extended her lead to 68-65 with three to go.

ROUND EIGHT:

Bridget looking refreshed after the cool down seventh, but Upton's looking like the slowdown did her some good, too. The blonde's legs are working properly now and she's holding her own as the welters work at range, putting punches together, landing solid shot. It's, again, two-way stuff, until, about 30 seconds in Upton lands a perfectly-placed right hand and REGAN'S HURT! Bridget's legs do a shimmy and the brunette quickly covers up and ON COMES KATE! Upton firing away with everything she has. She's down on the cards and running out of time, and she knows it. And, so does Bridget. Again, the advantages veterans have. Regan may be hurt, but she still has enough of her wits about her to know that all she needs to do in the eighth is survive, and, once again, despite the best efforts of one of the hardest hitters in the FCBA, she manages to do so. At the bell, Upton's still winging away, but the brunette's still standing, and, while Kate's grabbed the round big, Bridget still has the lead, 77-75.

ROUND NINE:

Kate a girl on a mission. She's down two and has only six minutes to turn things around, and she's determined to damn all torpedoes to get that done. Upton straight forward behind her left, taking canvas from the brunette. Bridget all right with giving ground, countering, tossing obstacles in the path of the blonde offensive without making any real stands against it. Regan's playing for time, the very thing Kate's running out of. BOOM. Straight right hand. On the button. And, DOWN GOES REGAN! Kate finally finds the switch with that big right and Bridget's blown to her back! Upton quickly to a neutral corner as the referee begins his count. Bridget looks up at him briefly, rolls to her belly at five, pushes to hands and knees at eight...but can get no further! Despite her best efforts, Regan can't get to her feet and the count passes her by and your winner by KO9 in comeback fashion is Kate Upton!

AFTER:

Upton looking like she needs to say, "but, you should have seen the other guy!" She's puffy, one eye closing, but despite that, she manages a smile. "Wow! What a fight! She can really hit, you know? But, it's like I keep telling everyone. There's nobody in the FCBA who can hit like ME. And, like I said before the fight, I'm as good as it gets. Models. JMDD. And welters. As good as it gets."
