Yvonne Strahovski versus Anna Torv
(More Australian Pride…)
(Words & Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE: Yvonne Strahovski versus Anna Torv. The stakes, as always, are high between these two. There is no shortage of reasons for the two of them to want to emerge triumphant, but perhaps none more important than the pride of these two to want to compete for Australian glory. These are two of, if not the best, fighters to ever emerge from Australia here in the FCBA and the fans couldn’t be more excited to see these two take each other on in a Christmas present for the league.

Surprisingly, the two of them don’t conduct any interviews leading up to the bout, but then again, they don’t need to. Both of their feelings towards one another is well-chronicled and motivations tonight abundantly clear. Tonight, they plan to let their fists do their talking and given the nature of their careers, it should be quite the conversation.

Both of them coming to fight night in attire to display the dedication they have for their nation, with Anna wearing a blacks sports bra with the words “Aussie Pride” written across it in golden letters, with matching gloves and shorts - hair in a fighting ponytail. Yvonne wearing a blue sports bra with the Australian flag emblazoned across her chest and a matching pair of gloves and shorts (with the words ‘Aussie Thunder Down Under’ written across her rear) - hair in a battle bun.

Both of them head to the center of the ring, respectfully shake hands and the crowd approves of this display of sportsmanship. Pure respect and determination between the two tonight as these blondes are ready for war and as the bell sounds, it looks like that exactly is what they are going to get...

R1: Girls out boxing to open, and it’s Torv sending the first message. Fading Yvonne’s right hand, Anna rolls with the punch, comes back with a sucker right of her own and has Strahovski stepping in fence post holes moments in, Classic Anna follow up as she steps right, reefing hooks to the firm belly of the blonde, banking the punches for later on as Strahovski struggles to keep up. Yvonne showing resilience recovers to take the fight to Anna in the final minute, but it’s a Torv round. Punching after the bell from both women as neither want to let the other go back to her corner on an up note.

R2: Yvonne tighter defensively, right at her cheek, cutting off the ring with a confident and easy gait. Torv with her right under her chin, left across her body bobs and looks to counter as Strahovski backs away with short, powerful punches from either hand. Punishing exchanges even to the final minute - Strahovski digging the double left hook to Anna’s side has the blonde hunched over and hurting - setting her up for a fine clubbing flurry at the bell. Torv grimacing in her corner--Strahovski really sunk the body punches in - just sort of twitching with her shoulder to deliver uncanny power with little preparation.

R3: Yvonne getting back on top - Anna with a great pair of wheels, but Strahovski able to cut the ring off almost at will and close distance. Yvonne bending left or right to rip punches up into Torv’s midsection--Anna with her elbows in tries to roll and bob with the punishment. Shutout Strahovski as she pummels Torv all around the ring - Anna just trying to stay off the ropes as she backpedals in pain.

R4: Nice boxing shutout from Torv as she shows flashes of old glory this round. Doubling up the jab, Anna gets Yvonne to stand tall and pose--blonde sweeping at the ribs with wide right hands, then pivoting to the left to turn Strahovski mid ring, Yvonne getting potshotted and bedazzled a little this round - Torv making it look easy without really hurting her opponent.

R5: Anna still loose and relaxed, working out of that crossed arm stance, right hand under her chin, left at her body as she bobs, come sup with poking jabs or quick strike hooks,. Stepping left, Anna works in and out, twisting her body into beefy hooks to the waist, then bouncing low to spin ff the blonde, Strahovski shutout again, mesmerized into watching rather than working herself.

R6: Strahovski getting a little reminder in the corner and she comes out moving her hands this round. Great action round wit both girls getting off in bunches, then moving left or right--Strahovski sinking in lefts behind Anna’s elbow starts to take over in the final minute. Round finishes with Anna’s butt touching the rope for the first time - Strahovski free and easy with her fists crunching into ribs and jaw in fluid combinations as Torv starts to fade.

R7: Anna bobs, rolls to her right with Yvonne’s left and comes back with the same sucker right hand she nearly took Strahovski out with in the first. Yvonne hurt again, reeling momentarily before covering up under the onslaught and Torv has a fine opening minute walking Yvonne into savage body shots as the blonde staggers forward, incredibly, Strahovski soaks it up and starts answering back midway through and the crowd roars as both girls soak up frightening point blank blows in rapid succession. Down the stretch, Torv staying poised, puts her head on Yvonne, walks her to the left and works the body as Strahovski’s hands stray around Anna’s back.

R8: Two-way action continues - both girls maintaining sharp form, getting off with blistering combinations, covering up to take as they take turns punching one another across the ring. Down the stretch - it’s that heavy short left hook of Torv proving decisive - Strahvovski’s legs tremble as Anna digs to her body, then shoulders the blonde back. Yvonne finishing up once again on the ropes, bending forward, soaking it up to her sides at the bell.

R9: Shutout Yvonne Strahovski. Anna Torv looks fatigued, riding rope from bell to bell, bobbing, rolling, but not firing back as Yvonne works over. Strahovski punching as hard and as often as she did earlier on, starting to impose her will on the older woman. Final minute sees Yvonne twitch meanspirited blows across Anna’s jugs - Torv wearing a furious expression at the bell knows she just got embarrassed.

R10: Yvonne pounding her way past Torv’s guard, Anna soaking up flush right hands and retreating sullenly to the ropes to take her beating, it’s mostly one-sided--Anna covered up tight, bent over nearly double and pulling back into the ropes to offer the only occasional clipping counter shot. Strahovski without fear, looming over her opponent, letting her fists play against Anna’s body and breaking into a bright smile at the bell. That smile disappears quickly, however, as the final tally comes back and the match is tied up - and you guessed it. Given their history, it’s no surprise this fight is headed into OVERTIME!

R11: Despite the length of the bout, it doesn’t appear to have lessened their intensity one bit. Neither of these fighters are retreating as they immediately surge towards the center of the ring, just focused and determined as they immediately start trading shots in a phone booth. No room for Supergirl in this phone booth as the two of them are pressed up close to each other as possible, just ripping shots at one another aggressively to the body, breasts and face. Just snatching up offense anywhere the opportunity presents itself, sweat flying off of them and accompanied by loud grunts from each of them as they hit as hard as any two women in the league. Nostrils flaring and teeth bared, taut bodies glistening in the center of the ring as the crowd is on their feet to applaud this fierce lightweight battle here in overtime as the two of them can’t back down for a second. Neither of them can afford to blink, but one of them must - eventually. The first two minutes are as close as can be, just two blondes battering one another for supremacy, but in the final minute, Anna manages to buckle her rival’s knees with a hard right hand clouting across her breasts. A follow up left to her belly has her doubled over and Yvonne is staggering back towards the ropes. As Torv surges forward, Yvonne retaliates with a hard left of her own to Anna’s taut abs and follows up with a hard right hook crashing across her cheek. Anna’s head swivels as Yvonne staggers forward from the follow through from the punch, shoulder bumping against Anna’s chest and torso to send her foe backpedaling. Anna does blink as she drops to a knee and in the closing seconds of the round, she staggers back to her feet. The two of them square off in the middle of the ring again as the bell sounds - even though Torv is back on her feet, the damage is done. With that knockdown, Yvonne manages to JUST separate herself with a win here in the 11th!!

AFTER: The two of them stare each other down for a moment, fists upraised as a keen-eyed photographer from BLONDE! Magazine snaps a classic photo and in fact, a series of photos (several of which are used to help pay for an all-expenses paid trip to Switzerland). A few of the photos which appeared in BLONDE! and other fight-related publications throughout the year include:

Yvonne and Anna just staring each other down - a mixture of disdain, competitiveness and respect mingling in their eyes. Absolutely no quit as the final bell sounds and the ref can be seen in the corner of the photograph coming over to raise the hand of the Aussie winner.

A still photograph of Anna Torv as she turns away, blinking back tears of frustration at another close loss to her Australian rival. You wouldn’t think that anything could sting worse than an OT title shot, but this one comes close as once again, Torv came close but still so far.

A jubilant Yvonne Strahovski turning away from her rival, towards the crowd as she breaks into a huge smile. Arms raised up into the air, eyes lighting up, beaming, glistening with sweat, clearly exhausted and just as clearly excited after another big win. This has been far from Yvonne’s best year, with facing a losing streak and a lot of challenges in the division, but this ends her year on a high note.

Shots from the fans, each of them holding up signs to support their favorite Australian fighter as both of them have gained a sizeable following over the years. Perhaps the best shot is a photo of two friends, each on opposite sides of this battle as one is wearing Anna Torv merchandise and the other wearing Yvonne Strahovski merchandise, holding up signs supporting their respective fighters in one hand and an arm across each other’s shoulders. What better way to showcase the holiday spirit and the power of the FCBA to bring people together?

Perhaps these fighters have too much pride or rivalry towards one another to hug or hold each others hands high, but both fighters walk out of the arena under their own power and to a great deal of well-deserved applause. You can even hear a sustained chant for “FOTY” from some quarters of the crowd and it is thundering. Regardless of the result, it appears that fans will be looking forward to seeing where Anna and Yvonne go next. The rest of the division should definitely beware as Anna doesn’t look to be retreating at all in her pursuit of a title and Yvonne looks just as determined as ever to reclaim her spot at the top. But, for now, what a fight!!
