II. Welterweight

KATRINA LAW (33 y/o, 5 ft 8, W: 16, L: 15) vs CASSIDY FREEMAN (36 y/o, 5 ft 8, W: 24, L: 17)

Before: Katrina Law and Cassidy Freeman – both long-standing names at welter, both in their thirties, both struggling with the supermodel revolution of 2016 to 2018. Law hasn’t met a lot of models in the ring, but Cassidy came up short against champion Tahnee Atkinson, then fell to slumping giant Karlie Kloss this year, although she has wins over old-guarders in Moore and Kajlich, too. There’s only so much space for the old guard at welter now, especially in title contention, that a loss must simply be forbidden for both of these girls. For Law especially, this is must-win territory, after a loss to another old-guarder in Bridget Regan in June. With exciting swimsuit model Kostek making waves at Bonzo’s Gym, Katrina feels the heat coming from the hungry blonde upstart. Will the gym move forward with all three welters? Right now, it’s just rumours, but after the retirement of Nadia Bjorlin and Milena Govich, it’s Katrina who needs to deliver, all pundits agree. Plus, Tahnee Atkinson’s expressed interest in offering Kat a title shot – until she lost to Regan…can she get back into the champ’s sights again, who’s also fighting on tonight’s card? Freeman and Law have fought classic battles before…Kat’s taken her down twice, including a hair’s breadth UD13 overtime in 2013, but Cassidy won their only title fight – an honour that still eludes Kat – in 2014. “Every fight with Kat has been hell,” Cassidy admits. “In a way, even battling Amanda wasn’t worse than her, because Amanda has a much more regular set-up. With Katrina, her hand speed, the angles…she’s such a dangerous welter because she’s one of the sturdiest girls around but combines it with off-beat punches, smart thinking in the ring.” – Kat thinks, “Cass is a one-trick pony. Make her power go astray, and she won’t know what to do.”

R1: Ding, ding, ding, the action kicks off…strong, authoritative jab poke from Freeman early, Katrina working around it, shifting clockwise for angles outside Cassidy’s right arm, especially via odd, nifty right hands over redhead shoulder. Leggy shifts and turns from Katrina – her robust counters get respect from Cass in pursuit of ‘er. Freeman more broad-legged, compact, stalking brunette on big-girl terms…Katrina’s stance more of an active bounce, torso rolling looser, head turns fast, bendy, constantly gaiting to redhead’s flanks to drop short hooks inside the tummy/mid-section or swwoooopp the right hand towards her foe’s skull. Minute one, two mirroring these tactics…Freeman’s jab strong, stout when it’s rolling to brunette tits, neck or guard, yet she does walk into those Law counters along the way, obviously just tryin’ to stay big, thick on her girl. Sweet, wiry hook to boobs…thundering clout-to-jaw…short-range right hands drifting past shoulder to the chin again…it’s Katrina making most of her game plan here early, picking up Cass for solid counter points. Freeman putting good adjustments in place during third minute, holding back the jab in spots, letting Katrina punch the left first, then look to keep Kat in place for body-to-body work. Law reads it, feinting to step back herself…action slowing down, as girls grow tentative. No inside work, no clinches…girls stay in range, until Law explodes down the stretch, ziiippppiinng the jab, jab, jab to Cass’s rack, then lifting the right hand to jaw from inside below…there’s the tremor in them redhead big-girl legs! Law’s round pretty wide as Cassidy’s jab won’t build up dominance as it was supposed to do!

R2: Similar images early in the second, but Freeman knows what to expect now: she still wants to burst into punches first, but does it from a looser, hop-hop stance to read Katrina’s counter/clockwise shifts better, subsequently deny Law that dangerous entry to the skull over her right shoulder, all while punching forward via a very strong jab. Cassidy’s big-legged stroll, the muscular left clout simply irresistible if done in textbook fashion – she’s shifting her weight forward, getting grabby with Kat’s via her hands, palming for her shoulders to shove her chick into ropes. Law doesn’t want the frontal trade to consolidate, and Freeman’s clubbing rights to her shoulder/neck/arms prove her right…Katrina simply not as effective when locked into the pocket that way, both hands at temple, rolling her upper torso to move with the punches, but unable to shift steps or work her sweet hooks from angles, just takin’ more, more thumpin’ belts to her mouth/jawline. Freeman popping some slaying punches from her hips, that whole brick house leaning into those shocking right hands. Katrina kept in check a bit now, but with a solid big-girl taker’s quality, too: she survives some tap-tap right to the jawline, across the cheeks over second round. Freeman nods in self-approval, looking over a buzz-legged Katrina at the bell…Law rights herself, stepping toe-to-toe as girls stare down until the ref orders, then shoves them into their respective corners.

R3: Cassidy squaring up, anticipating Katrina’s feints, shifts pretty well at this point…it’s the hand speed that makes K-Law dangerous nevertheless, slipping her head/torso outta redhead fire, then kicking hooks back, shrugged little uppercuts, cuffing spanks across sides of Cassidy’s skull. Freeman answers with raw-fisted power through the straight middle when Kat’s there, stroking her muscular clout into Law’s breadbasket, wide torso, ribs. Brutal, shuddering ribwork forces Katrina to tie up, hobble Cass’s arms, drive her backward by grabbing underneath her arms…Katrina proves a stout-legged clincher in these spots, squirming yet looking strong in that grasping battle of physical strength. Law so hazardous, sneaky when inside, though…Cass’s arms blocking some nifty rising uppercuts just in time, her head bobbing aside to evade those effortless hooks up top. Action moving along these lines…redhead the more active puncher, battering into Katrina’s core/heart, coaxing Kat into her punches…Law shifting, lunging, and EATS THE RIGHTY UPPERCUT as she leans left, attempting to roll the right hook to Freeman’s face. First time Cass really counter-punches Katrina’s leftward shift attack with precision, timing her brunette – shattering blast turns Law’s legs rubbery, and Cass steps-with, viciously nicking her points via slap, slap jabs to Kat’s tight guard. Kat stabilizes down the stretch you betcha, though…girls wade into squaring off stances, exchanging hooks/jabs to guard, trading ‘em toe to toe until the bell, although Cass’s definitely fresher after three…and Kat’s showing an ugly cheek cut from the uppercut.

R4: Cassidy trying to pick up Kat with relentless jabs…Law trades back robustly to breasts, really bowing into her own chopping hooks, stopping Freeman’s forward momentum in its tracks. Freeman staying in range, ramming more of ‘em straights into brunette front…Law staying there, too, responding to Cassidy’s power with own welter sledgehammer. Kat’s in the pocket, but using her mobility, shiftiness there, too: she ducks inside, dropping the hook across redhead tummy, then rising into a pummeling short-range uppercut to Cassidy’s teeth! Freeman’s legs’ turn to go buzzin’ on impact…Katrina helping herself, dropping HEALTHY, STRAPPIN’ straights in Cassidy’s bra, guuh-uh, guuu-uh, jostling proud redhead woman off her stance from mid-ring. Law’s eyes widen as she walks inside, clubbing Cass upside the head/temple, left/right, left/tight, actually shouting alongside her punches! Freeman’s SHOCKED by the power, staggering on the spot, getting pasted right now as a fired-up K-Law’s punching her into ropeside.

Bashing jabs into arms, busting hooks into tummy, shuddering rights to the guard/jaw – frighteningly one-sided moments until Cassidy suddenly jolts the right hand back in between all the mayhem, pulling it over Katrina’s short, drifting left tummy hook in wide angle to brunette jaw! Badass left hook, Freeman, follows…hitting the other side of Law’s jaw, tottering the Bonzo brunette into a ropeside clinch, with both girls tying up instantly, just mindlessly shuffling their hips against hips, jostling for position…both girls depleted in toe-to-toe action! Bitter disappointment well visible in Katrina’s face when she walks back to corner at bell, knows she’ll have to dig even deeper against her sharp opponent tonight, perplexed at how Cass could muster that comeback during such a pasting at the hand of Kat’s fists.

R5: Girls resort to familiar stances…Freeman assumes mid-ring ground, circling a bobbing Katrina clockwise, picking out brunette via rising, dropping jabs, pumping ‘em much more up-tempo than during early in the match…Kat’s stepping, hopping to her left, getting those hooks past the redhead shoulder, her odd slanting lefts such a weapon for her tonight whenever Cassidy doesn’t anticipate the torso shift, arm feints correctly. Freeman accordingly trying to cut off the ring/ground, coax brunette into solid, thumping toe-to-toe, profiting from a slightly more pronounced sluggishness in Kat’s legs…big hits from last round wicking away some of Law’s mobility advantages here…that JACKHAMMER uppercut, Cassidy’s left, reaching Katrina to the neck before she can turn, shift away, just one of several attacks that didn’t work when girls started fighting tonight. Girls turn into default welter set-ups, a battle of competing jabs and thick, hounding right hands developing: clockwise circles, one girl heaving the lefty, lefty, big and thick to guard/neck/skull, rolling the right hand behind ‘em, usually battering to guard…then turns, shift, the other girl doing the same…girls falling into heavy clinches to ease the effect of that big punching…lots of forced breaks from referee, lots of sloppier punches. Short, shrugged uppercut, Katrina, down the stretch, as she jostles her arm free, pushing Cass into ropes, axing the uppercut at her neck…Cass’s turn to falter into hulking big-girl clinch on impact! Not a lot of clean action to choose from for judges…girls project similar strength, pretty much cancelling each other out for fifth-round draw.

R6: Fighters stride into close body contact, their opposing styles/strategies aligning across the course of the fight as a result of brutal attrition battle…now Katrina, Cassidy walk each other around, arms/shoulders pawing at each other, tying/hanging up when shrugging fists pick up jaw lines, cheeks. Legs no longer used to cut off the ring or get a girl out of range, no, at this point they’re just straining with effort to support weight, hold ground against all the power on the other side! Short, jolting uppercuts become the weapon of choice…reflexes no longer save girls, as chin/bone impact sends quivers down tree trunk legs. No consolidation as Law and Freeman trade, answer and counter, matching each other’s strength step for step, the crowd shouting for their respective favoured sides. Second minute opens to sight of girls laying mouth-on-shoulder, torsos not tying up, but digging into each other…Cassidy’s left hook goes a-grubbin’ beneath Kat’s sternum, rack, and a-grubbin’, and a-grubbing…she’s finally got Kat open-mouthed, groggy-ish! Freeman observant, yielding some steps back, Law tilting into her direction – Cass twitches back forward into the short left uppercut, a gorgeous blast stumbling K-Law’s feet. Kat’s slowly loosening on her legs, torso now, her hands limber at chest…Cass negotiates another half-step, then loads on the next left uppercut, and A-BLASTIN’ IT TO KATRINA’S SKULL! Devastating chin shot axe-drops listless Katrina like timber, has her crashing down onto knees and face, then sprawling to relax on her belly, her slightly opened mouth abutting canvas ground, her eyes twitching open, shut, open, shut as the ten count passes brunette by! Heartbreaking knockout of Bonzo beauty…that’s a KO6 Cassidy Freeman!

After: Cassidy Freeman, ladies and gentlemen! Former welterweight champion leaves the back-to-back disappointments of a title bout loss to Atkinson and a knockout to Kloss behind and leaves Katrina Law stunned, punched out in a classic welter big-girl battle…it’s the kind of battle that’s been pretty rare in a welter division of lanky six-feet models in recent times. Poor Katrina getting helped onto knees, rolled onto her back a groaning, battered beauty, eyes still dizzied…it takes a long time to get her propped up until she’s ready to limp to her corner. “Yep, it was hell out there” Cassidy admits, looking all upbeat, sunny, cheering post-fight. “I knew I had to drag her into toe-to-toe trade, deny her those angles, deny her any ring control. Once I got her to fight on my terms, I knew my power could melt her. And it did,” she shrugs with a smile. Pundit analysis: Freeman’s win won’t leap her ahead of supermodel frenzy, but it will get her respect from all corners, leave no doubt that even among the supposed old guard, Cassidy’s still a fighter to elicit fear in any mindful opponent. For Law, a must-win fight has ended in a bitter loss as Freeman’s fists just proved harder tonight – repercussions will probably remain to be seen.

Crowd starts BUZZING with gossiping chit-chat when a reeling Katrina’s leaving the arena on wobbly steps, arms hugged around a member of her coaching staff’s shoulder – a huge opportunity has opened up for Kostek now – can she capitalize?
