Vanessa Hudgens vs. Jessica Parker Kennedy(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

In a previous era, this fight would be described as Hudgens dealing with a type rival, because, there's no question, Kennedy occupies the same type space as Hudgens. She does not, however, occupy anywhere near the same run on the flyweight ladder in the FCBA, currently holding three fewer career WINS than Hudgens holds career TITLES. That, however, doesn't bother Jessica. "The thing with Vanessa is, girls get it all wrong. What you have to do is bully her. Break her. Get in there and beat on her until her inferior body quits. And, that's just what I plan to do."

"THIS body," says Vanessa, using her hands to display her bikini-clad form, "isn't inferior to any other body on the PLANET, let alone in the FCBA. As Jessica is about to find out."

ROUND ONE:

Kennedy, true to the pre-fight promise, wants to get physical. Nessa not having any. Instead, Hudgens does something she does as well as anybody in the FCBA. She legs and boxes. And frustrates the dickens out of her brunette opponent. Canadian determined to close and bang, but Vanessa is simply not going to allow that to happen. Instead, she sticks the jab into her rival's face repeatedly, circling, dancing, stopping to pop some nice combinations, then getting back moving before Kennedy can react. It's the kind of round that can easily discourage a girl with the kind of record Kennedy has against a champion like Nessa. Whether it does or not is yet to be seen, but, what can be seen right now, is quite a bit of dominance from Hudgens, who, at times, seems to be toying with Jessica, letting her get ALMOST where she wants to be before punishing her, then dancing away. At the bell, it's Hudgens wide and with the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Kennedy doesn't appear discouraged. Instead, she keeps coming. She's working smarter now, looking to cut the ring rather than to come right at Hudgens. And, it works, to a point. She's able to corral the former champion here and there, and, when she does, she gets off lusty, banging body and head, committing on punches. For Nessa's part, she mostly plays defense in close, knowing well that Kennedy's path to victory involves a big punch. So, rather than try to match Jessica point for point, Hudgens works to limit the damage, then score when they're in open canvas. But, as the round goes on, they're in open ocean less and less and in tight more and more. And, Kennedy's able to gain an advantage as a result. By the bell, Kennedy's pull ahead in the proceedings and taken the round, albeit close, to even things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

No surprise to see Hudgens, with far more experience than Kennedy, make an adjustment. She's not just circling now, she's circling back, giving some ground, giving herself a little more space and time to react to Jessica's attempts to cut the ring. Works perfectly. We're right back on the terms we saw in the first, with the Canadian trying to bring the American to battle, while Hudgens avoids those attempts with seeming ease. Again, Jessica spends the round with Vanessa's left in her face. The former champ scores tons of points with the jab, but that's not where she does the most damage. Instead, it's when she stops and puts together quick flurries that throw Jessica to the defensive, allowing Nessa to dance away before Kennedy can respond. All in all, its a rough round for the Canadian, who takes the worst of it in a big way. At the bell, it's Hudgens wide and back on the lead 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Kennedy turns up the aggression. It's a dangerous strategy, because she's opening herself up for a lot of punishment, but, after the third, she realizes there's little choice. Canadian after Nessa in a big way. She's taking a pounding as she tries to run the American down, but, she's resolute and able to do so in spots, landing some of her best punches of the fight. Still, Hudgens is getting the better of things until...BOOM! A right hook from Kennedy and NESSA IS HURT! Former champ's knees do a shimmy and Jessica is all in! Kennedy winging away with everything she has, driving Hudgens into the ropes and absolutely abusing her to both head and body. Nessa in a high, tight guard hanging on desperately. Kennedy's got "Upset Of The Year" on her mind as she swings for glory all the way to the bell. When it rings, however, Vanessa is still standing, albeit unsteadily. On the cards, it's Kennedy wide and we're even at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Jessica pressing in a big way. Knows she needs to make this count. She's walking Vanessa down, sitting down on every punch, looking for the finisher. Hudgens playing defense, giving ground, jabbing to slow the Canadian's pursuit, but not doing much more...BOOM! Right. Hand. Counter. And KENNEDY IS HURT! An absolutely perfectly-placed shot by Vanessa. Only the fact that she was on her back foot at the time stops it from being a finisher. But, finish is now the plan for the former champion. Hudgens switches immediately from defense to offense and sends Jessica into full retreat. Kennedy wobbly, taking fire from everywhere. Straight. Right. Hand. DOWN GOES JESSICA! Canadian blown to her back. Hudgens steps OVER her on her way to a neutral corner. Nessa stands smiling as the referee counts. Kennedy struggles to get up, but can't come close to doing so, eventually sinking face first to the canvas. It's OVER. And your winner by KO5 is Vanessa Hudgens!

AFTER:

Hudgens all matter-of-fact in the post-fight. "This was nothing but a stay-busy for me, as everyone knows," the former champ says dismissively. "She's not in MY league. Then, again, to be absolutely honest, NO ONE is."
