AMANDA RIGHETTI (35 y/o, 5 ft 8, W: 82, L: 28) vs MICHELLE RYAN (34 y/o, 5 ft 7, W: 12, L: 14)

(Results: Lookout!, Words: Bonzo)

Before: Michelle Ryan’s been one of the most promising British fighters crossing the Atlantic, but a combination of supermodel mania and some disappointing losses has made her fall off the radar. Consider Ryan’s scalps at welter: fellow Brit hard-body Gemma Atkinson, long-time slugger Romijn, former Righetti-busting champ Lancaster, Henstridge, Kajlich, Nolin and the g.o.a.t. Theron…it’s a roster of impressive wins. Ryan’s problem was a lack of title action: she lost her only chance at Kate Upton’s dominant hands in December 2016 and another shot never came up. Her losses to Upton, Law, Freeman and Kloss put Ryan into the defensive, and with other contenders storming into the spotlight, not least her stable mate and welterweight champion Hilary Rhoda, a duo of disappointing losses to upstarts Hill and Goodwin in 2018 was enough to convince Ryan’s management that her best times were behind her. As if to rub it in, Rhoda beat the newly free agent Ryan in August, and left Ryan’s career prospects in arrears. Ryan’s desperate to get some tailwinds behind her, and she knows she needs that career-defining win that’s probably eluded her until this point…so why not pick out one of the toughest nuts of all? Evangeline Lilly’s short stint as a free agent might become a template for other fighters who have lost long-time management.

“Amanda’s vulnerable”, Michelle explains, basking in the sunlight of PPV media attention again. “And I’m not impressed by her beating Strijd, Skriver or a, what, fifty years old?, Casta. I think she’s been getting distracted by all those supermodels, and she’s going to be surprised when a real welterweight hammer punch’s bashing into her skull. I’m ready.” – Righetti comes into the fight in a pretty comfortable position, a solid No. 1 title fight contender in both rankings on a six-fight winning streak. “Michelle’s past her prime, no doubt, but she’s right in that she’s a classic welterweight big-girl in a way that’s been going out of fashion for a while now, and since I have a pretty classic welter big-girl bout on my radar soon, Michelle’s good for tune-up. No offense, but that’s what it is.”

– Ryan still a popular fighter in her stable…Hilary Rhoda’s the most obvious front-row guest at tonight’s event, mentioning her support for former stable mate in short, pre-fight interview despite some discord after their own PPV fight in August. “The odds might be stacked against her, but Michelle’s exactly the kind of strong, powerful puncher who have been able to rock Righetti’s world in the past…think Henstridge or Patton. If Michelle comes out a-sluggin’, don’t be surprised when Rigs is kissing canvas tonight.”

R1: Fighters square off from strong, solidly planted stances, staying toe-to-toe early, with both girls leaning into numbing, bashing punches to grind out first strike control. Ryan’s especially eager to wield a sledge in first exchanges: her left hand’s locating Amanda’s right biceps, her right hand’s drubbing Righetti’s head, ribs, mid-section with plenty of oomph behind it. Leaning her left shoulder forward into opposing breasts, Michelle pushes forward after her strict jabs, bearing down to subdue redhead via her power/weight in the clinch. Righetti trusts that ever resilient body, stamina, the strength of her legs, as she negotiates Ryan’s weight of shot, while hooking back thick, whacking punches upside both sides of Michelle’s head, then laying in big-girl, resisting Michelle’s heaving, walk-back efforts to hold her ground. Girls keeping ring all tight and narrow, fighting in a confined space pretty much all round long, mouths laying on shoulders, hands a-pushin’ at opponent biceps, tummy, hips to open up space for dangerous, strong one-punch action…scenes that could come from the dying seconds of a ten-round slugfest. ‘Manda slowly trying to reverse course against Michelle’s belting aggression, her jabwork very precise as she’s locating Ryan’s mouth, neck via short inside trajectories, matching Ryan for hurt. Michelle staying adamant, relentless, though, those first points a point of pride for ambitious Brit: fighting toe-to-toe, she wicks ‘Manda some brutal right hands to the paunch down the stretch, then scrubs a jug-shockin’ series of lefts n’ rights across Righetti’s rack…redhead punched into grimace, her hands getting pulled down for a short, brutal hook across her jaw…Michelle finally forces Righetti onto her heels, has her shimmying back into ropes. Good, thumping welterweight action in the first, and Michelle’s here to do some damage!

R2: Michelle’s aggression resumes, bashing short, pumping, monstrous jabs against Amanda’s guard…Righetti changes tack throughout early exchanges, sliding backward on fast, mobile, hoppin’ legs, picking out short, one-off attacks against Ryan’s tits, flanks on her way out, bobbing/leaning out from and under Michelle’s orderly jabs. Ryan struggles in pursuit of a leggy Righetti, getting pretty clobbered to her mouth/jawlines across her own left side when ‘Manda’s right pitches in wide. There’s the right hook, Righetti – Michelle’s face twists into pain from that slobber-knockin’ short, drifting right-to-mouth, her body clobbered more off kilter when redhead’s jab, jab, jabs swat into her tits. Boom: Righetti suddenly on top, with Michelle forming grunting earmuff at ropes. Amanda bumping head/mitts against Michelle’s guard to prepare her ripping body work to flanks/gut, her torso twisting left to jerk a thick, rib-bustin’ right hand deep into Michelle’s paunch…guuh-uuh, Ryan’s hurt shabby! Michelle stumbles on the spot, forced to tie up with her left arm around Righetti’s shoulder, holding her mindlessly until the ref breaks ‘em up with authority. What a lickin’ from Big Rigs…dull right crosses trying to locate Michelle’s jaw, snapping brunette’s head back when on impact, thumbs-up straights battering into Michelle’s breasts left/right, left/right, wide, thumping hooks tormenting Ryan behind her left elbow, sending shivers down strong British bod. Righetti doing her damage, Michelle absorbing…that’s all round long. ‘Manda careful to deny Ryan room to counter, either lingering in Michelle’s clinches/holds patiently, or stepping off slightly to let Ryan stoop off ropes, then lean back in via authoritative lefts. Michelle a pretty shabby, stumblin’ sight at bell, but Rhoda’s not giving up on her in short interview between rounds: “Don’t count this chick out. I think she’s taking AR’s bombs pretty well.”

R3: Righetti drilling Ryan via the jab, her moving knuckles kept at chest as she’s walking forward to explode into vicious one-punch poke across Michelle’s guard/skull, staying to Michelle’s left via fast, strong hops…Brit falls off Righetti’s pace accordingly, hastily pedaling backwards, punch impacts shoving her onto heels, back hitting repeated ropes. Amanda’s stance more relaxed, swashbuckling, hands-loose than usual as Michelle’s looking drubbed, spent, and it costs her soon: Righetti stayin’ aggressive with the jab, sees Michelle’s short righty counter hook comin’ and bobs, leans back fast, yet misjudges Ryan’s distance, so she neatly stumble-steps into Ryan’s forward-shattering blast across her mouthpiece/teeth! Michelle’s eyes flashing up at sight of Righetti’s tiptoeing plight…she’s bumping her shoulders against ‘Manda’s guard, then walking her girl into ropes while Righetti’s still all rickety, looking disoriented, her eyes flickering. ‘Manda’s instincts kick in fast: she drapes her arms around Michelle’s wide back, stumbling off from the ropes in the hold, waiting for ref to get in hot, as he does after a while. Michelle’s initiative not lost throughout rest of round: she forms orderly set-piece jabworks against a tight, earmuffed Amanda, really buffeting Big Rigs via tasty lickings beneath her elbows, across the rack, checking Rigs via the left, then really getting off with gorgeous right crosses, right hooks, right uppercuts – Big Rigs just a big-girl robot from all that numbing pressure here, stopping off the ropes, walking from clinch and hold to clinch and hold. Just down the stretch there’s life in Righetti: during clinches, she’s walking forward again, at one point leaning back to clip Michelle a bashing right uppercut across side of face, but as the camera zooms in on opponent faces during toe-to-toe struggle before the bell, there’s Michelle’s wide, fiery eyes, her mouth opened in exhaustion while Righetti’s blank, grunting/grimacing in effort against Ryan’s power. “That’s my girl!” Rhoda’s heard to shout in her first row seat.

R4: Righetti getting read the riot act throughout break – carelessness a rare lack of attention for cool, controlling pro – Amanda forms the necessary adjustments, setting up withering hairline-to-hairline exchanges in mid-ring locations, right hand clutched at eyes, left twitching into short, snapped-off powerful jabs, then reverting to her guard and taking a step off, then reloading. Ryan’s, Righetti’s torsos toppling, tottering under back-to-back, one-punch fire – shoulders, upper torsos, strong legs powering these punches. A kinked righty hook splits up Righetti’s lower lip, two devastating left uppercuts to the temple/hairline almost stupefy her into passive daze – but ‘Manda’s always bangin’ back! Short, drifting, effortless straight-left PASTES Michelle’s mouth, upper jaw, snaps that head of hers back, so Rigs can pull the right uppercut right behind it, whack…the short, brutal cross-to-tits almost shovin’ Michelle off kilter! These whuppin’ exchanges GO ON AND ON, but slowly, surely, brutally, it’s Righetti fighting herself on top – girls stepping-with, loading, but down by the second, later the third minute, ‘Manda’s precision enforces her advantages: Ryan still clobbering her to the bod/ribs, but she can’t find the spaces, trajectories to kiss Rigs’ chin, yet ends up taking ever more harm herself. Late hammers: Righetti’s right uppercut splittin’ Michelle’s mitts to belt it to the nose, the left jab tapping jaw-jaw….it’s the right cross-to-cheek that finally backs off a determined Ryan, has her half-stumbling to ropes…bell sounds before Rigs can add on. “That was one of the best rounds of welterweight action I’ve seen in a while!” Rhoda announces, looking pretty impressed.

R5: Michelle rallying her body’s troops, digging into the action all a proud, determined, strong-bodied fighter…entrenched into the ropes, she rolls her left shoulder towards Righetti, forms her tight v stances and holes up in trust of her strong legs to carry her out of harm and hold her weight. ‘Manda’s eyes lighting up with Michelle’s increasing helplessness, as she’s applying her devastating methodical pressure: jabs from mid-range nudge Ryan into position, cuffin’ her boobs…thick, wide right hands bury themselves deep in Michelle’s gut/ribs, shuddering her body. Ryan answering in intermittent fashion: struggling inside a clinch, she separates to heave thick-ish right hands, mostly hooks, into Righetti’s own gut, trying to locate kidney, liver shots…some explosive off-shoulder jabs jerking towards ‘Manda’s guard up top as Ryan hops-off. Righetti comfortable from a range, denying Ryan’s hold/clinch attempts via the jab, then picking up Michelle with gorgeous, splashing, devastating right hands. Early second minute: one of those right-hand crosses shuffles aside Ryan’s left arm, socking to Brit’s jawline…Michelle’s hurt, spasm-y! Ryan groans, trying to jab off Righetti as she slides along ropes in cranky shape, her torso bending into cables. ‘Manda stalkin’ her, she’s keeping both hands rolling at her chin, feintin’ the left, the right, left, right, then leans in no-nonsense via wide, swinging overhead right – punch grazes Michelle’s hairline/temple, and FOLDS her body into ropes all limp-ish, loose…Ryan falls apart in stages as Righetti watches, staggering out of the ropes, losing her hold, tripping over her own feet to thud down onto her tummy! Michelle’s proud body stirring all throughout count-out, energy kicking in…she rolls onto her back with groans, grimaces, then trying to get to one knee, but she’s too dizzy and weak…that’s a KO5 Amanda Righetti!

After: Righetti pretty laid-back after her celebration, reaching out to hug a recovering, tired Michelle, patting her on her wide shoulders before corner helps Brit onto stool. “Michelle’s dogged strong. I’m angry about my third-round blank-out, but I was pretty determined from there, and that helped me to end it early. I’m excited about Bridgy now – I want to see her helpless like this!” Righetti announces post-fight. Meanwhile Rhoda’s visit to the Ryan corner ends up pretty short – in her state, there’s no pronounced interest by Michelle to meet her former stablemate. “Michelle definitely had a shot tonight,” Hilary states assuredly. “If you ask me, Amanda looked pretty vulnerable against her power.”
