Melissa Benoist vs. Sophia Bush

(Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

Blonde/brunette match up of bantam contenders promised to hold the interest. Bush has ridden an improbable 2015 comeback through three stables all the way to a bantamweight title shot, while Benoist has earned a title shot of her own and is looking to use Sophia as a springboard to another.

"She's good," says Melissa. "There's no doubt about that. But, what I KNOW and what I'm about to PROVE is that I'm BETTER."

"Look," says a hard-eyed Bush, "I was in with Dobrev and should have BEATEN Dobrev. And, this girl isn't as good as Dobrev. So. Do the math."

ROUND ONE:

Bush aggressive early, but Benoist not having it. Melissa wants to box, as she uses her length and athleticism to enforce those terms. Sophia wants to close, but she can't get it done. Instead, she's getting stopped by the blonde's jabs, and, that gives Melissa the choice of circling away or following on with hard right hands. Sometimes she does the former. Sometimes, she does the latter. In both cases, though, she frustrates Bush's efforts to get any kind of offense going. And, while the brunette can't get anything done, the blonde is building up points. By the final minute, Melissa's got a very big lead, and it only gets bigger, as she continues to control the proceedings right to the bell. When it rings, Benoist has claimed the points wide and grabbed the 10-9 lead.

ROUND TWO:

Bush adjusting, finding ways past the jab, closing, banging. Benoist OK on these terms, too, Blonde has plenty of power. But, she's not able to command the proceedings like she did in the previous round. Instead, it's a good, two-way rou...BOOM! Right hook, BUSH! And Melissa is HURT. Blonde rumblin', stumblin', fumblin' around the ring as the brunette gets off heavy with both hands. Sophia intent on ending this thing, as she hammers away at a dazed Supergirl. Benoist backed to the ropes in a high guard, hanging on desperately as Bush looks to find the 'off' switch. Referee looking in closely, because Melissa isn't doing much but taking, but, she's doing juuusssttt enough to keep him at bay to the bell. When it sounds, there's no doubt that the points go to Bush, wide, evening things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

It ain't broke, and Sophia ain't fixin' it. She's getting physical with the blonde, and she's got to be loving how it's going. Benoist still buzzed and unable to do much more than retreat and land the occasional counter. Meanwhile, Bush is doing whatever she wants, pretty much WHENever she wants to do it. Brunette is stepping to blonde, thumping her to head and body, banging her around the ring while she piles up points and hurt. Melissa trying to hold canvas, but can't get it done. Instead, Supergirl takes a pasting for about two and a half minutes. Late in the round, Benoist's legs start to firm up and she's able to give about as good as she gets. But, all of that is much too little and waaaay too late. At the bell, it's Bush wide again, and Sophia now leads 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

More physicality. Bush wants to bang, and Benoist now more than willing to do that with her. No attempt to return to the boxing of earlier in the fight. Instead, blonde wants to prove to brunette that she's not going to get will imposed on her. And, she does. Melissa giving as good as she gets inside, as both fighters bang away to head and body, thumping ribs, lathering abs, then going upstairs with short hooks and uppies. At times, we drift to middle distances and more of a technical game, but, mostly, we're in the proverbial phone booth, with both blonde and brunette looking to invest in body and wear down their respective opponent's resistance. And, while plenty of damage is done on both sides in the fourth, nobody looks close to wearing down. At the bell, it's close on the cards, but, it's Benoist who's claimed the points and evened things at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Right back to work, blonde and brunette trading hard shots in the middle of the rin...BOOM! Right hand, Melissa! And Sophia is ROCKED! Bush wobbles, nearly goes down, then gets sent reeling back into the ropes by a barrage of leather from Supergirl. Blonde getting off lusty, hammering away, paying back the brunette for the second round. Sophia in a high guard, taking, hanging on, rolling with, blocking what she can. Again, ref looking in closely but remaining at bay, as the brunette does fire back here and there. But, mostly, it's Melissa, banging, punishing, looking to find the elusive finisher. For two and a half minutes she looks. But. She does not find. When the bell finally rings, Bush is wobbly and scuffed, but still standing. Benoist, meanwhile, has won it wide and now leads 48-47 at the half.

ROUND SIX:

Sixth begins with Benoist pressing the advantage, walking Bush down behind the left jab. Sophia giving ground, turning, trying to stay off the ropes while Melissa slowly works her back toward the cables, finally pinning her there at the minute mark and turning the big guns on her again. Brunette playing defense, leaning back in the ropes in that tight earmuff. She's firing back more this time, landing some hard shots, but, it's still Melissa getting the better of things until...BOOM! Straight right from Benoist and SOFIA'S LEGS LOCK UP! Brunette crashes forward past Benoist's left shoulder to land, face first, on the canvas. Melissa to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Bush not moving at all as the referee counts down at her. She's both down and OUT and it's OVER! And your winner by KO6 is Melissa Benoist!

AFTER:

Melissa jubilant in the post-fight. "I TOLD you," the blonde shouts. "I TOLD you. She's very good, but I'm BETTER. And, lots of other fighters in this division are going to find out I'm better than THEM, too!"
