Hailee Steinfeld vs. Emily Bett Rickards

Words: Front Street / Results: Lookout!

BEFORE:

"Look," says Hailee, "I know ALL about her. Athletic as hell. Hits above her weight. She's a tough cookie. Well. I'm TOUGHER."

"Yeah, she's a lightweight," says Emily with a nod. "And, I'm a bantam. But. I can take her. And, that's exactly what I'm going to do."

ROUND ONE:

Steinfeld the bigger girl, and it shows early. She makes with the long left jab, then begins following with rights. Backing up the smaller blonde, walking her down. Rickards game, trying to hang in there, but she can't get it done. Instead, the brunette beauty's controlling things, having her way. Emily banging back here and there in counter, but that's about all she can get done. And, it's not just the points the younger woman is piling up that are a concern. There's plenty of hurt adding up, too. Hailee landing hard, accurate shot that will have an effect after awhile. And, Rickards' corner knows it. Thus, continuing shouts urging their girl to move and get off square. But. That doesn't happen. Hailee keeps lining Emily up right to the bell, and, when it rings, the brunette's claimed the points wide and leads 10-9.

ROUND TWO:

Rickards starts angling, fouling the brunette's sights, and it makes a huge difference. Now, Steinfeld can't line her up with the jab and drop in the hard rights. In fact, she's having trouble finding Emily at all. Rickards is here and there and nowhere. She's slipping punches, ducking, blocking, then firing back in counter to score with both hands. Hailee manages to get some leather on target, mind, but she's tossing a lot more than she's landing. And, while the brunette's throwing a lot more leather than the blonde, it's Emily who's landing a much higher percentage, keeping herself in the round. Final thirty seconds sees Rickards open up a close round with a trio of quick, accurate flurries that force the brunette to cover up. At the bell, it's close, but it's Emily, and we're even at 19.

ROUND THREE:

More two-way stuff with Rickards staying off square with movement and playing angles. Blonde still not getting as much offense as she wants, but, she's getting some going and avoiding a repeat of the first round, when the brunette steamrolled her. For Steinfeld's part, she continues working hard to get back to the whole steamrolling thing, but she's not sloppy or overly aggressive about it. It's smart, sound stuff from both fighters and results in another close round. There's not much in it for the first two minutes, meaning the points are up for grabs in the third. Still, though, no one able to grab hold of the thing or create any space. Final seconds see a couple of sharp exchanges as both blonde and brunette look to steal the thing. Steinfeld does a hair better and it's enough to get her the round by the closest of margins and put her back in the lead at 29-28.

ROUND FOUR:

Rickards finally gets rolling. Emily's now getting the geometry right, avoiding the younger woman's jab, bouncing to her spots, getting off in combination, forcing Hailee to cover up. Steinfeld not able to get much going, even in counter. Instead, she's getting touched up by the athletic blonde, who's finding spots to place hard, accurate leather and then getting same on target over and over again. Hailee's never hurt, but she's getting hit. A lot. And that means it's now Rickards who's piling up both the points and the hurt, while Steinfeld mostly covers up and waits her turn. A turn that almost never comes. Final seconds see the blonde absolutely in control, landing flurry after flurry to put an exclamation point on a great round. At the bell, it's Rickards wide and we're even at 38.

ROUND FIVE:

Rickards rolling, showing all that speed, all that skill, all that athleticism. She's got the younger woman flummoxed now. Hailee simply can't find her rival much of the time, her sights fouled by Rickards' motion of foot, head, and hands. And, while Steinfeld's guns are off target, the blonde's are continuing a heavy, effective fire, piling up more of those points and more of that hurt. BOOM. Right hand, Hailee! Steinfeld catches Rickards CLEAN with a BOOMING straight right and DOWN GOES THE BLONDE! Emily ragdolling to her back and a shocked Hailee stands staring at her for a couple of seconds before heading to a neutral corner at the behest of the referee, her corner, and tons of screaming fans. The delay, however, does not prove at all costly. Because Emily is OUT, not moving at all as the count passes her by. It's OVER! That quickly it's OVER. And your winner by KO5 is Hailee Steinfeld!

AFTER:

Hailee all smiles, knows she pulled it out of the hat in that fifth when everything was going against her. "Yeah, she's really quick, very athletic, and she made it hard on me. But, I'm getting better every time I get in the ring, and I found a way. I caught her and I finished her. And, she won't be the last one to end up at my feet."
