Kristen Stewart vs. Camilla Mendes (Unified Flyweight Championship)

(Words : Front Street / Results: Lookout!)

BEFORE:

"Everyone remembers," says Camilla with a smile, "How I walked into Jane Levy's home arena and took her lunch money in my FIRST FCBA fight. What they might NOT know is that LEVY is a better fighter than Stewart. Sure, Kristen's had a hot streak, but, if I had to pick one for MY stable, it would be Jane. And, Levy couldn't beat me with ZERO FCBA experience. So, what chance does a weaker fighter have now that I've got two years under my belt?"

"This girl needs to do a little research before she starts talking," says a hard-eyed Kristen. "Roberts? I BEAT her, Camila LOST to her. Portman? I BEAT her, Camila LOST to her. Williams? I BEAT her, Camila LOST to her. If she can't beat girls I've already beaten, what chance does SHE have? Answer: NONE."

ROUND ONE:

Mendes on the move early. No surprise. Camila can move and do so effectively. Kristen, plenty athletic herself, working the feet, looking to square, get her jab on, and work off it with right hands and right hooks. Both fighters have moments of getting what they want. When Mendes is circling, bouncing, jabbing, sending sand flying, she's got the advantage. When Stewart can control that movement with the left jab, it's Kristen who has the edge. And, all of this pretty much offsets itself through the first two and a half minutes of the round. Last thirty, though, is mostly Camila, as the challenger gets into a nice rhythm and is able to create some separation on the cards. It's not much, but it's enough. So, when the bell rings, the challenger has grabbed a valuable point late and leads 10-9.

ROUND TWO:

Same again. Good, two-way action with neither fighter able to dictate terms. Camila has times where she's ranging the ring, kicking up that sand, stopping to pop, landing nice combinations, then circling away. At other times, Kristen gets the jab on, keeps the younger woman in front of her, and is able to land combinations of her own. Again, it mostly offsets for the first two minutes. Final minute, though, sees Kristen begin to solve the geometric problem. She's getting the ring cut with her feet, lining up her rival with that long, accurate jab, then dropping hard right hands on her. Mendes trying to find space to move, but Stewart not allowing it. She's keeping Camila where she wants her, and that makes a huge difference. Last minute is all Stewart, and she gets the points close to even things at 19.

ROUND THREE:

More of the same. Mendes on the move, Kristen trying to bring her to heel. Again, Stewart beginning to find some success doing that, cutting the ring and then making with hard combinations. Camila slipping, dipping, trying to avoid that jab, managing to extricate herself here and there and get back on the move. Then. BOOM! Stewart stepping forward to cut and MENDES TIMES ONE! Camila ROCKS the champion! Stewart staggered...and DROPPED TO HER BACK WITH A RIGHT HAND! Crowd going NUTS as Camila races back to a neutral corner to watch and wait. Champion dazed, sits up at six, gets to her feet at nine. Takes the mandatory. Then, the ref waives on the challenger. Mendes all in, of course, tossing everything she can think of at the older woman trying to get the stoppage. She backs Kristen to the ropes and batters her for a full minute, but can't find the 'off' switch. Instead, at the bell, K-Stew is standing. But, Mendes takes the round 10-8 to lead 29-27.

ROUND FOUR:

Impressive stuff for Camila early. She's clearly looking to finish, but she's absolutely being clinical about it. She's working her jab, setting up her punches, keeping Kristen on the defensive, all while piling up the hurt. Stewart still buzzed and wobbly, and Camila taking full advantage. She's landing hard shot with both hands, grabbing all the sand she wants, and generally giving Kristen a thorough beating. The only thing she doesn't manage in the first two and a half minutes is to finish the thing. Final 30 seconds see a bit of a change. K-Stew's got the legs mostly back under her now, and she's able to stabilize her front and begin firing back. It's waaaay too late to mean anything on the cards, but Camila sees it and adjusts, going back to boxing and not forcing anything. At the bell, Mendes has the round wide and has extended the lead to 29-26.

ROUND FIVE:

Mendes with the stick and move again. She's circling, jabbing, stopping to pop. Camila gaining two advantages with these tactics. She's scoring well, and she's making Kristen use those legs. Stewart, for her part, patient. She's stalking, cutting the ring, then getting the jab on and following with solid right hands. Again, it's mostly a wash on the cards, as the points Mendes piles up on the move are countered by the ones Stewart amasses during set pieces. Until. BOOM! Straight right hand, KRISTEN and Mendes is GOBSMACKED! Camila stumbles, nearly goes down in the sand and then STEWART DROPS HER with a right hook! Mendes flat on her back as Kristen heads to a neutral corner. Referee counting down on the challenger, and it's looking bleak...but Camila won't punk! Mendes to hands and knees at eight, pushes to her feet at nine. Takes the mandatory. And, on comes Stewart! K-Stew hammering way at the younger woman, driving her across the sand like a latter-day Rommel to hang her up on the cables and abuse her for fifty seconds. But. Again. Mendes won't punk. She hangs on to the bell, and, when it rings, the champion has won the round 10-8 and cut the lead to 37-36, but Camila's still in the fight.

ROUND SIX:

Stewart smelling blood in the nearby water. She's walking Camila down behind that accurate left jab, blitzing her with hard right-hand follows. Mendes playing defense, giving ground, countering in spots, playing for time to get those legs back working and the mind cleared...BOOM! Straight right from Stewart and DOWN GOES MENDES! Camila dropped to her back again by the champion. K-Stew again to a neutral corner. Mendes staring up as the referee counts...but...again...she won't punk. Camila's up at nine for the second time. Ref looks in closely as he gives the mandatory, but waives on Kristen. Who goes to TOWN. K-Stew winging punches at the younger woman, pinning her to the ropes and absolutely BATTERING her. Ref looking in closely as Camila hangs on. Right hook from Kristen sends the younger woman staggering along the ropes and IT'S OVER! The referee leaps in and bundles the brunette to safety and your winner by KO6 is Kristen Stewart!

AFTER:

K-Stew heart-attack serious in the post-fight. "She caught me a good one, no question," the champion says. "And, give her credit for playing off it well. But. Eventually, I was going to shake it, and, when I did? Just a matter of time until I made her eat sand."
