ANA-ALICIA VS EMMA SAMMS
Retro Bout Ca. 1983
Results: Lookout, Writing: Archer

Ana-Alicia: (12/12/56, 5’5 (1.65 m) ("Falcon Crest")
Emma Samms: (8/28/60, 5’4 (1.62 m) ("General Hospital"/"The Colbys"/"Dynasty")

Before: The 1980’s in USA Celebrity Boxing saw many an exciting fighter come out of the serial world. For the most this was mainly the Prime Time Division of the “Soap Boxing” genre. Who could forget Linda Gray (Dallas) vs Linda Evans (Dynasty)? Or Charlene Tilton (Dallas) vs Heather Locklear (Dynasty) To name just two well-remembered encounters.

Yet there were those who rose out of the Daytime TV ranks into prime time soaps (Ana-Alicia had begun on ABC’s “Ryan’s Hope”) then go on to star on “Falcon Crest” (CBS) while Emma Samms had come out of ABC’s “General Hospital” then soon rose to “The Colbys” and “Dynasty” for ABC prime-time.

This fight from around 1983 was apparently part of a much larger Soap Boxing card staged by an independent PPV promoter. Archivists are still searching for additional fights (rumored to include “The Bold and the Beautiful’s” Katherine Kelly Lang vs Meg Ryan of “As The World Turns” and Deidre Hall of “Days of Our Lives” vs Judith Light of “One Life to Live”).

Emma was said to be fresh off a KO8 over the formidable Kristian Alfonso (“Days of Our Lives”), while Ana was said to have just flattened “Knot’s Landings” Lisa Hartman. So both saw this as a chance to boost their “Soap Boxing” cred.

The film begins with a view of the fighters walking to the center of the ring where they meet in with the announcer and the refree. Ana-Alicia is in a black faux-lingerie type one-piece swimsuit with golden gloves and boots (black laces). Her hair is in a tight French braid

“How do you see your chances, Ana?” The announcer asks.

“I’m from Mexico and it has always been my dream to show what I can do in boxing ring. I’m pleased with my progress so far. That win over Lisa Hartman was a thrill, but win over Emma would be even bigger. I have been training hard and I feel can do it!”

Emma Samms is in black vinyl hi-cut one piece with white gloves and boots (black laces). Her hair is pulled back and slicked down. The announcer moves to her:

“Your win over Kristian Alfonso really had people talking,” the announcer says to Emma. “You looking to continue that with Ana-Alicia.”

Emma smiles confidently: “I certainly do. Happen to catch her fight with Hartman. It is amazing what you can do if you can just land the right punch at the right time.”

Ana-Alicia’s dark eyes narrow: “What are you trying say, Emma?”

Emma smiles mischievously: “Lisa was working you over. She had you all set up to go down and she got careless. I’m not saying you didn’t land a good punch, I’m just saying it was a lucky one.”

Ana’s temper seems to the flaring, gloved hands on hips, she gets in the British actress’ face:

“You know nothing about how I conducted that fight. I was nowhere near going down. If anyone won with a lucky punch it was how you beat Alfonso!”

“How dare you say that to me! That was a brilliantly executed fight plan!” Emma cries indignantly and pushes her chest up against Ana’s. Ana pushes back.

The ring announcer has hastily departed the ring, leaving the referee to restore order which he does by threatening to DQ them both. A sullen silence falls between the two (though they have whipped up the crowd which is loudly expressing a jumble of opinions on the matter). The ring instructions are covered quickly. The gloves slam loudly into each other and then Emma and Ana-Alicia stalk off to their respective corners.

Emma and Ana-Alicia stand in their corners, breathing hard and eyeing each other. The camera pulls back slightly to show the small arena is packed with excited fans. Then the gong sounds, many in the crowd jump to their feet cheering and the fight begins…

R1: Both fighters are showing a decent level of boxing skill development. They are both out to mid-ring at a good speed and waste no time in striking at each other with probing punches. They circle around each other, punches being seated to the head or snapped into the body. Both fighters carefully looking for opportunities and then striking. Stays very even much of the way, but then Ana gets two quick hooks into Emma’s stomach that tips her forward. Ana then goes to the chin with right/left uppercuts that send Emma reeling back. Ana-Alicia tries to follow, but Emma fights back with the jab into Ana-Alicia’s face and this stalls her attack. Two go back to the circle and punch tactics to round out the bout which the judges give to Ana-Alicia by a close margin.

R2: Emma Samms was more aggressive as the second, she came in quickly and struck at Ana-Alicia to the ribs and then into the jaw. Ana was knocked back on her heels and Emma move with her, peppering Ana’s body with straight rights and lefts. Ana then showed some nice footwork by sliding to one side and then driving a hard right into the side of Emma’s head. Emma was sent stumbling forward as Ana paused to regroup and then she went after Emma. Emma seemed to have recovered from the bell-ringer and had her dukes up as Ana closed in. This set off hard-punching action to the body as the two brunettes battled it out to the body at point-blank range. Breasts, bellies and ribs were being raked over and over by these blows and the two were bracing their feet to get more power into their leather. Then, slowly, but surely, Ana’s hooks to Emma’s belly began to drive Emma back all hunched up and trying to hold herself together under fire. Ana sealed the round with a snap right cross to the chin and sent a shiver through Emma’s body and drove her back further just as the bell rang. It another close round, but once more Ana-Alicia emerged with the win on her side of the judges’ cards.

R3: Emma not pleased the way the opening rounds have gone and she sits on her stool looking unhappy as she talks it over with her trainer. As the bell sounds for the new round, Emma pounds her gloves together and heads for Ana-Alicia. Very quickly Emma drives Ana-Alicia back with lightning strike rights and lefts to lump up Ana’s face and put a wobble in her legs. Ana’s gloves go up around her head and Emma now hooks to the body. Ana pulls back rapidly , Emma gives chase, but when she catches up with Ana, she finds herself once again battling toe to toe. Ana’s fighting hard and matching Emma punch for punch. Then Emma manages to slip a right uppercut in behind Ana’s gloves to smite her hard under the chin. Ana-Alicia shudders, but stays up and keeps countering, but now she is being pushed back by hooks to the midsection. Bell ends the round and Emma Samms wins her first stanza of the bout, though it’s by a close margin.

R4: Emma seems to have a taste for fighting inside and she quickly crowds in on Ana. Ana fighting back, but she’s under pressure as Emma keeps pressing in, Ana and Emma are using short rights and lefts to slam into straining torsos. Then they begin to circle around each other, trying to find openings, but they are matching each other punch for punch. Finally, Emma pulls back suddenly and this causes Ana-Alicia to stumble forward off-balance. Emma swiftly strikes at Ana to the side of the head as Ana tries to duck away. Ana pulling back, shoving out the jab to slow Emma’s pursuit. Emma moving to cut off the ring with the obvious intent of getting Ana-Alicia on the ropes. Ana fighting back to avoid this, but Emma finally pushes her into the strands—just as the bell rings! Emma steps back with a look of annoyance on her face. Ana-Alicia looks understandably relieved to have avoided a potential beatdown. She even managed to make it a close round, but Emma Samms still wins it.

R5: Busy corners. Both boxers look full of fight and eager to resume the punching. Bell rings and out they come. Emma trying to press in close again. Ana stands her ground at first and there is sharp trading to chest and belly. Then Ana steals an Emma Samms move, she steps back suddenly and draws the Brit beauty off balance! BAM! Ana brings a full-powered right cross into Emma’s chin. Emma sent spinning to one side, but Ana moves with her and now brings right/left uppercuts crashing into Emma’s chin. EMMA SAMMS GOES CRASHING ONTO HER BACK! Ana-Alicia looks down at the sprawled Emma and smiles triumphantly, then she trots to the neutral corner. Referee moves in and starts to count. Emma pushes herself up on her elbows and looks around with a blank “Out-to-Lunch” expression, then swoons back to the canvas as the referee is crying:

“EIGHT!...NINE!...TEN!...YOU…ARE…OUT!”

The crowd roars as the referee then holds up smiling Ana-Alicia’s right arm in victory.

THE WINNER ANA-ALICIA DEFEATS EMMA SAMMS KO5!

After: Emma Samms has to be helped from the ring and has no comments on the sudden end of the contest. Ana-Alicia, of course, has a number of things to say:

“I’m a bit sorry I knocked her cold at the end. I was going to ask: 'How did you brilliantly executed fight plan go this time?’ Oh well, I was just happy to put her on the canvas. I have to tell you, it feels really good to do that to someone who doubted your abilities. Thanks to all my fans for supporting me! It felt really good to hear your cheering for me!”

Ana-Alicia’s boxing career did not extend much into the 90’s. She is said to have married and retired back to Mexico. There are rumors she occasionally liked to box with certain Mexican actresses on special occasions. Some even say she and Emma Samms carried their rivalry in wrestling rings at private luchadora matches, but, so far, no film has been found of these reports.

As for Emma Samms, she shook off the setback against Ana-Alicia and campaigned well into the 1990’s as a fear and respected ring veteran. Whether or not she and Ana-Alicia had a boxing rematch is another tantalizing mystery of celebrity boxing history. Suffice to say, celebrity fight fans are fortunate that this fight has been rediscovered.
