Vogue Williams vs Alex Gerrard (nee Curran)
(Independent vs Lioness Club)
(2-0, 2 KO vs 13-11-1, 11 KO)
Results: BBU; Story: Vassago

BEFORE: Vogue Williams declined an appearace on the Irish Open when she learned that Rozanna Purcell received the Main Event billing but the brewing welterweight war between the two Irish girls is only set to continue with tonight's episode as Alex Gerrard steps up to spoil Vogue's elite hopes. The Lioness veteran has seen it all around the league and reached the divisional title tournament semi-finals last November even though some pundits think she actually overachieved during that event. The wave of new talent has entered the 130 lbs ranks lately and Alex cuts a forgotten figure now that her footballer husband tries to make some money as head coach of Glasgow Rangers.

We've landed in the Cardiff Arena for this one as Curran's demands prevent Vogue from hosting another Irish party in her own backyard but she should be more satisfied with the betting odds which give her a slight advantage over the Merseyside model. Vogue's punchout of Martha Hunt on St. Patrick's Day probably has a lot to do with those favorable numbers!

Vogue Williams wears a crimson basque top, black hotpants and black gloves. Long brown hair tied in a sleek ponytail. Alex Curran wears a leopard print one-piece swimsuit and red gloves. Long blonde hair tied in a braid. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the welterweight division.

Round 1:
This isn't a flyweight clash but the early tempo suggests both models have forgotten about it. Alex wants to take down the entire Irish welter contingent and just wades it straight into the brunette's body but Vogue responds with a steady aggressive drive over the top and snaps the blonde's head back repeatedly which forces the older woman back. However Curran doesn't waste much time in leaning back and tries to immediately recover from the Irish drill. She loops a promising hooking combo that bounces off Williams' face but then a clattering hook smacks the blonde on the nose and the loud gasp around Cardiff Arena makes the Mersey veteran think better off it! Vogue is no pushover and a single punch can turn the lights out above 130 lbs; that was a good indication of the brunette's raw power and Alex can be excused for taking the defensive road for the remainder of the round. BBU TV's Georgie Thompson reckons she's lucky not to leak some blood here already!

Round 2:
Vogue finds more success working from the front while Alex remains a little sluggish on her feet and gets outworked in close range. Both women show plenty of commitment but the Irish punches seem that oh-so stronger and snap the blonde braid more frequently according to the audience and Georgie in the booth. Curran refuses to acknowledge that fact though and keeps firing crisp shots herself but Vogue's precision eventually forces her into a lenghty clinch as she abandons the defensive circles seen in round one. Williams bumps her back to the ropes but doesn't seem all that annoyed here over the stalling tactics and nods back to Victoria Smurfit who acts as her personal ring advisor tonight. Bell.

Round 3:
Vogue's production overwhelms the Mersey blonde in another close range tangle but it only adds a couple of fresh bruises on the older girl's face as she refuses to back off from the Irish assault and sticks her counter-punching efforts on target as well. Williams gets rattled briefly but charges ahead and thumps the blonde onto her heels before a scything cross catches her on the nose anyway! Ugh! Curran rallies to connect with the jaw and suddenly the Irish guard looks suspect with Alex exposing it in vicious fashion. She cuts the Irish stunned under the left eye and hauls in more head-hunting shots that reel the brunette back onto the ropes come the final seconds. There's no escape from here and Alex makes sure her opponent reamains trapped in a difficult spot that earns her a massive ovation from the Welsh audience!

Round 4:
Alex tries to cash in on that promising stretch in the third and she head-hunts the somewhat immobile rival during the early stages however Williams quickly finds her groove and responds in equally hectic fashion. Both women almost clash heads as they lean onto each other in the center of the ring but with Alex bursting through upstairs more frequently, she finally makes the brunette think better off it and Vogue has to yield real estate when she gets tagged on the swollen area under her left eye. She keeps the Mersey blonde at bay therafter but it's Curran who wins the judges' approval with her stalking demeanour according to Georgie Thompson in the booth so the Lioness entourage can high-five that performance come the bell.

Round 5:
BBU TV camera fades in on none other than Rozanna Purcell making her way to the VIP lounge before the fifth. The former Irish pageant winner celebrated a crushing victory over Elena Santarelli on Saturday and is widely rumoured to face Vogue Williams later this summer for national welterweight title. However Alex Curran's apparently in contention to face Ms Purcell too so BBU TV have their hands full with reporting all the match-making drama. In fact, Rozanna's arrival somewhat overshadows the action in this round as both competitors have noticed the woman whom they want to destroy soon! Alex steadies the hooking ship first but Vogue's guard prevents further damage before her fiery attack bounces off the Mersey defense as well. More clinching follows where Williams shows her strenght as she shoves the blonde into the ropes but that's hardly a boxing showpiece material.

Round 6:
We're back to some meaningful action again as both women square off in the center of the ring with Alex determined to work around that cut under the brunette's eye. However Vogue loops a cross double on her own and snaps the blonde's head with methodical patience that makes the older woman squeal in pain. Williams then delivers a piercing hook on the solar plexus and stuffs her opponent with additional overhand pressure. Curran tries to brawl herself out of trouble but remains glued to the spot and a right-on-right exchange turns sour as Williams bursts her lips into a swollen mess having simply pounded away at 'em with different result all night. She breaks the blonde's flesh here and adds a looping cross on the temple that drops her onto the ropes where the Irish assault pins the Lioness veteran into all sorts of bother. Ugh! Alex disappears behind a desperate earmuff and gets clobbered into a standstill come the bell with Rozanna Purcell not very happy about that!

Round 7:
Mel B. tries to urge Alex into immediate recovery but the blonde veteran soaks up too much pressure over the top early and remains stranded in the center of the ring while Williams knocks her about and makes the swelling even more visible now. Ugh! The blonde braid goes for another ride and Curran's unable to escape the Irish heat as she gets outworked both inside and out. Vogue clips her jugs several times to further slow the potential recovery down but then has a free shot across the nose before adding a crunching uppercut on the jaw when the guard collapses amid the Irish pressure. Uh-oh. Alex sinks on her knees with a loud yelp but Vogue barks just as she sends a lightning quick hook that NAILS the Mersey model on the nose AND SENDS HER CRASHING DOWN ON HER BUM moments later!!! Rozanna Purcell nods back to her entourage up in the stands and Vogue shouts back at the cheering Cardiff audience herself while Alex takes a standard eight count before rising back to her feet. The clock runs out shortly afterwards but the momentum has shifted towards the Irish model now and Alex shakes her head as she leans over the ropes seemingly ignoring her coach here for a moment.

Round 8:
There's not much left in that Mersey tank, folks and Williams makes it brutally obvious when she splits the blonde's mitts and glues her to the spot with a relentless hooking assault. Curran just can't stop anything here and drops into loud spasms with every punch counting on the double now... Vogue barks through her efforts but does a great job of avoiding a potential stalemate even though Curran seems physically done here... she soaks up another quick rally and even Georgie Thompson has lost count how many of them land on the blonde's face without a single response... Curran cries out her last breath and SLIDES ONTO HER KNEES amid a truly punishing Irish assault and when she collapses face-down at the brunette's feet, everyone inside the arena knows it's ALL OVER!!! KO8 Vogue Williams!!!

AFTER: That was a very impressive performance from both women however Vogue's elite prospects eventually broke down one of the most dangerous veterans around the league. Goergie Thompson points out that while Rozanna Purcell blasted Elena Santarelli into a pulp just two days ago, Vogue's opponent provided a much tougher test and should be rated higher by the experts. Well, Ms Purcell wouldn't agree with that as she tries to make her way down ringside to personally explain why she's the top rated Irish talent. Victoria Smurfit still remains bitter over her loss at Purcell's hands last year so she gets involved in a shouting match with the former pageant while Vogue laughs off all these efforts while climbing the ropes and saluting the Cardiff audience.

Meanwhile Mel B. is forced to drag poor Alex out of the ring and suddenly the Lioness welterweight hopes look very bleak indeed. Sophie Howard seems to be focused on the American JMDD market and new talent Romee Strijd has attracted Amanda Righetti's attention which makes her BBU debut unlikely for the time being. These problems won't affect the looming Irish welterweight dispute though and Roz almost scores the first trophy when she lashes out at Vogue's hair only to be denied by the security crew. Some girls simply won't calm down at all and even Georgie Thompson is a little bemused by this behaviour. It's good publicity though...

Final result: Vogue Williams def. Alex Curran KO8.
