(38 / 5’8” / 68:34 FCBA / Lookout Boxing)

Whitney Cummings

(38 / 5’11” / 2:1 FCBA / The Comediennes)

Story: The Comediennes / Results: Lookout!

Pre-fight:

“For her it’s a big fight,” says Yvonne. “For me it’s just number 103. I don’t know much of what she can do so there may be a slow start, but I trust myself to be able to win.”

“This has been a long time coming,” says Whitney. “She’s one of the greats, you know? And when I heard management wanted to get me into the ring with her I decided to take a step back and really focus on training for this specific fight. I feel as prepared as I’ll ever be and I’m confident in myself, even if nobody else is.”

R1: The Comediennes entire stable is there and they wait with baited breath… this is the biggest fight of their stable’s very young history. Whitney comes out with eggshell white shorts and gloves. Yvonne goes with all purple. The two fighters tap gloves and the fight is on.

Whitney with a reach advantage and she makes use of it early. She keeps her left out, using it to stab at Yvonne when she gets too close. Yvonne never really finds a rhythm, which is surprising. Whitney looks much sharper to begin the fight as she only takes a few jabs here and there. She’s able to use that reach advantage of hers to keep Yvonne at bay and land enough shots to take the round fairly convincingly.

10-9 Cummings.

R2: Whitney comes out the same as she did the previous round, which is a bit of a mistake. Yvonne is able to adapt. She keeps her guard up and gets Whitney’s rhythm with the jab down.

She uses that to dance a bit, using her speed advantage to throw some savvy jabs and chip away at Whitney’s defense. Still, Whitney shows pretty solid fortitude as she counter punches with some convincing lefts.

It’s all flirting through the first two rounds, but Yvonne just barely scratches it out.

19-19.

R3: The girls star to open up a bit more. Whitney allowing Yvonne to get in close, which seems like a mistake early on. Yvonne’s gloves fly through the air as she finds an opening. She causes Whitney’s guard to go up and then starts pounding away at the body.

Whitney backs off and resets. Deep breath… and then she goes. Coming aggressively at Yvonne and the Hall of Famer is taken aback.

Whitney bangs away at Yvonne’s guard. Right and left hooks flying. She really starts to use her size to bruise up Yvonne’s forearms and biceps. A nice sneaky right uppercut finds its way to Yvonne’s ribs and she lets out a squeal of pain.

She’s hurt!

Whitney watches the Hall of Famer bend over to her side. She pivots and delivers a huge left hand that knocks Yvonne backwards into the ropes. It’s all Whitney as the bell clangs!

29-28 Cummings.

R4: Yvonne definitely comes out sluggish, which is going to be a problem. Whitney has the reach, size, and presumably the power. The one thing Yvonne has is speed.

Whitney capitalizes early, tossing a few connecting combos to Yvonne’s slouching guard. She’s really protecting those ribs. Whitney gets a little overzealous though and Yvonne’s counterpunching is just too seasoned. She rebuffs Whitney’s attack and goes on one of her own.

It definitely lacks the punch we’re used to seeing from Yvonne though, as she’s labored by those ribs. She’s able to fight her way back to the middle of the ring and land a few solid rights to Whitney’s cheek, enough to cut it a bit. Yvonne was in trouble, but scratches out another round as the bell rings.

39-39.

R5: Yvonne is feeling a little worried and it shows. She goes for a very sloppy right hook that doesn’t come close. Whitney simply lets it past and steps in to deliver another crushing blow, this time to Yvonne’s other set of ribs.

Yvonne’s eyes bulge. Whitney pops her with a right cross. The Hall of Famer is hurt. She’s hurt really bad. She stumbles back, but finds Whitney all over her.

It’s more of chase than a boxing match. Whitney follows Yvonne all around the ring, knocking her between her gloves before the Hall of Famer slips away. This happens a few times. Yvonne not quite able to shake Whitney and Whitney not quite able to keep Yvonne still.

Whatever it is, it’s clear that with Yvonne not landing a single punch and getting hurt she gets shutout of this round. Massive for Whitney.

49-47 Cummings.

R6: Whitney is sky high after that round. She’s got the legendary Lightweight in trouble and she comes out and knocks her a round to start round 6.

An uppercut completely rocks Yvonne, who has to stagger back. She looks like she’s on the verge of going down. Whitney throws some vicious combos, but somehow Yvonne is able to keep her defense up and counter punch her way out of trouble!

She’s moving, because she has no choice, but as Whitney chases her Yvonne is able to land some solid jabs to slow her down. Once Whitney has to back off, the Hall of Famer is able to fire off a solid right hook and a left body blow. The bell rings as Yvonne once again steals another round just in time!

58-57 Cummings.

R7: Whitney’s trainer tells her, “Don’t get sloppy… relax, she has to come to you.”

Whitney takes that advice to heart. She’s done all of the chasing so far, but to start round 7 she hangs back. Yvonne tries to get in close, but Whitney’s reach advantage puts up a strong defense. The Comedienne is standing tall in the middle of the ring, daring Yvonne to come after her.

She stands with confidence as Yvonne chips away at her, unable to land anything significant. The Hall of Famer is getting frustrated. She’s hurt, losing, and can’t land anything at all. The veteran makes another mistake.

She opens up her left side as she tries to throw a cross. A little lazy getting back there and Whitney sees her window. She wallops Yvonne’s ribs. Yvonne shrieks out in pain. Whitney steps up, rears back, and slams her right glove deeper into Yvonne’s side. Yvonne gives out another yell.

She’s in agony.

Whitney with a jab. Another jab. Another jab. She’s walking Yvonne back. The Hall of Famer is laboring… she looks disheveled, distressed, delirious!

Another uppercut to the ribs and Yvonne flops down to the canvas! She clutches her side as Whitney’s arms fly up in the air.

The ref rushes in and Yvonne goes to a neutral corner. She bounces on her toes in anticipation.

Yvonne’s left hand clutches her side. She’s panting as strands of her blonde hair cover her lips. She looks up at a giddy Whitney and pounds the canvas.

The count is at nine as she gets to her feet. The ref asks her if she’s okay.

“I’m okay!” roars Yvonne.

The bell rings before the two boxers can meet up again.

68-65 Cummings.

R8: Yvonne’s jaw hangs low. Her guard is down. She is keeping her elbows tight towards her ribcage, not wanting to give Whitney any opportunity to do more damage there.

Whitney pops Yvonne’s head back with jabs. Those long arms really taking their toll. Yvonne feels her back hit the corner. Whitney is bearing down on her. The brunette takes a swing…

Yvonne ducks it and comes up with a massive right uppercut to the chin.

Whitney is staggered!

Yvonne keeps on her… a right… another right… dodging a counterpunch… and then a jab… jab… jab… one more jab before she hits her with another dangerous uppercut!

Whitney collapses into the ropes and slides down onto her knees. Her head is rolling as she puts her gloves on the canvas, trying to center herself.

Yvonne backs off but mutters under her breath… “stay down, please, stay down you tall f*ck.”

Whitney’s left hand slides across the bottom rope as she loses balance. She falls down face-first to the canvas. The ref counts to ten.

The Hall of Famer with a come from behind victory!!!

Winner: Yvonne Strahovski via KO Round 8

Post-fight:

“WOW…” says Yvonne. “I did not expect that from her at all. She is way better than I thought. And my ribs, Jesus. She really really hurt me. Lightweight, Bantamweight… whatever man, she’s got it. That girl is going to be a player, I’m telling you.”

“It sucks but it doesn’t suck,” says Whitney. “Sucks to lose but my performance didn’t suck. So it’s a real contradiction… then again so am I in a lot of ways. I thought I had her in round 7 but she’s one of the best lightweights ever. Can’t count her out. I feel good about how I prepared and fought, but bad about the outcome. It’s just one of those weird nights.”
