JULIE ADAMS VS JANE GREER

Retro Bout: Ca. 1953

Results: Lookout Writing: Archer

Julie: B. 1926, 5’6 (1.68 m)

Jane: B. 1924, 5’5 (1,65 m)

Before: According to that noted celebrity boxing scholar, K.O. Kapowski, this fight was of a number of celebrity fights sponsored by the USO a military bases around the country. This particular fight was held at The Presidio in San Francisco in 1954. It featured starlet Julie (then Julia) Adams, whose best known film “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” would be released in 1954. Julie would be fighting the more established Jane Greer (best known for the 1947 noir classic “Out of the Past”.

“I was really glad when the film of this one surfaced. Julie was at the beginning of her celeb boxing career, but she was already show talent. Jane had been fighting since the late Forties and she had a reputation for being hard on rookies. Still, any rookie who go hang in against her would have credibility as fighter. I am sure that’s what Julie had in mind here.”

Although the film of the bout is in black and white, K.O. Kapowski has uncovered notes that describe the attire of the two fighters. Julie is in a white one piece swimsuit she was wearing black gloves and boots with white laces. Jane is wearing light green one piece swimsuit with dark green gloves and boots with light green laces. Loose hair for both.

The ring is set up outdoors with a huge crowd of servicemen around it. Fighters are escorted to the ring by a phalanx of MP’s. Once in the ring, the two are introduced. Special guest referee is the distinguished veteran Barbara Stanwyck who looks pretty hot herself in black shorts and striped referee shirt. Miss Stanwyck goes over the instructions. Julie and Jane tap gloves and go to their corners. DING! DING! DING! The bell rings. The crowd roars and the fighters move out from their corners…

R1: Jane Greer strikes hard and fast to Julie Adams’ head as the fight commences. Julie’s head swiveled by the impacts first to the left and then to the right. Jane then going to the chin with strong uppercuts that knocked Julie’s head back and sent tremors down her suddenly wobbly legs. Julie falling back, gloves up around her face and trying to jab Jane back, but Jane working angles to keep the punches striking Julie to the side of the head. Then, late in the round, Jane starts working Julie to the midsection with a sustained volley of hooks. Julie now hunched forward, still trying to protect her head being dominated by Jane. Round ends and Jane Greer has an easy first round victory.

R2; Julie seems more prepared and Jane comes back at her in the second stanza. Sharp jab to the face disrupt Jane’s initial charge. Then Julie goes to the midsection with some hooks and then sends uppercuts into Jane’s chin. Jane circles away, but then comes back in and duels fiercely with Julie in an exchange of head punches. Julie getting hit hard again, but so is Jane and they both start slowing down as all the bell-ringers to the head start filling their brains with fog. They move into each other with body punching and this time Julie able to force Jane to give ground. Jane on the defensive as the round ends and Julie Adams wins a narrow victory in R2.

R3: Julie now more aggressive as she moves in on Jane. Julie begins with some more hooks to the stomach and ribs, but then she suddenly strikes with big right hand to Jane’s jaw. Jane staggered to one side and Julie moves quickly to drive Jane into the ropes. Jane pinned against the strands, looks trapped, but then clinches so the referee Barbara Stanwyck steps in to break it up. Julie resumes her attack, but now Jane is retreating along the ropes, jabbing to try to keep Julie from pinning her. Julie keeps up pressure, but Jane finally makes a break out to mid ring and sets up a tight defense there. Julie can’t get anything like a knockdown punch in, but keeps up a superior punch rate until the bell rings. Julie Adams wins this round wide.

R4: Julie Adams comes eagerly trotting out of her corner to resume her offensive against Jane Greer. However Jane has other ideas: she charges Julie, makes a feint at her head with the left, but brings her right crashing deep into Julie’s stomach. Julie jackknifed forward, nearly knocked off her feet, but manages to stay up right. Jane immediately goes after Julie to the jaw with crisscrossing rights and lefts, then uploads with smashing right and left uppercuts to Julie’s chin. DOWN GOES JULIEADAMS! Julie falls onto her back and then rolls to her side. Jane hurries to the neutral corner. Barbara Stanwyck moves in to count. Julie pushes herself up into a seated position and then grimly struggles to her feet rising to break the count at “EIGHT!” The fight resumes, but Julie Adams goes into face-in-gloves, shut down defense. Jane unable to finish Julie off, but wins the round wide thanks to the knockdown.

R5: Jane Greer attacking Julie Adams with vigor as the new round begins. Jane firing volleys of punches high and low in an apparent effort to keep Julie confused about what’s coming next. Julie defensive, mostly hunching up to protect her body with her globes up high to protect head and face. Only a few counters going out from Julie. Jane working hard, trying to find openings as she circles around Julie, but while she’s putting a lot of punches into Julie, she’s not doing a lot of damage. Jane looks frustrated at the bell, but Julie is walking away firmly, her defensive efforts seem to have bought her recovery time from the beating she took in R4.

R6: Out they come once more. Both getting out of their corners quickly. Julie Adams looking fully recovered now goes on offense with a stream of heavy hooks into Jane Greer’s abs. Jane struggling to stay upright a those hooks are making her bend forward. Jane lunging forward, trying to drive a straight right into Julie’s face. Julie able to block this move with her gloves, but then fires back a straight right of her own that whacks Jane hard between the eyes. Jane recoils backwards and now Julie unleashes thunder and lightning into Jane’s jaw and chin. Jane trying to get her mitts up, but then one uppercut too many crashes into her chin AND DOWN GOES JANE GREER! Jane toppling to her side, then rolling on her back, arms a her sides with her right knee bent upwards. Barbara Stanwyck moves in as Julie heads for the neutral corner. Jane struggling to rise, but keeps falling back to the canvas and then:

“EIGHT!...NINE!...TEN!...YOU’RE OUT!” cries Barbara Stanwyck.

Barbara then goes over and brings Julie Adams to center ring where she raises her right arm in victory.

“THE WINNER JULIE ADAMS DEFEATS JANE GREER KO6!

After: We don’t get to see much of the post fight, but K.O. Kapowski records that the win was an important win establishing Julie Adams as a newcomer to be reckoned with. Jane Greer was to serve as a gatekeeper putting many an ingénue to the test, but it was test that Julie Adams passed.

“I always liked those USO Boxing shows,” remarks Mr. Kapowski, “I hope more of them can be uncovered in the future.”
