Florence Pugh vs Lacey Chabert
(Writing: LMW / Results: Lookout!)

Florence Pugh

(25, 5’4, FCBA Debut, 2-0 BBU, League of Mighty Women)

Lacey Chabert

(38, 5’3, 43-40-3 FCBA, Free Agent)

Pre-Fight: The third fight of the night sees League of Mighty Women’s young prospect, Florence Pugh, taking on an experienced former champion, Lacey Chabert. After winning both of her fights in the BBU, Florence will be making her debut in the FCBA with high expectations. Lacey has been having problems with finding her past form for several years now, but it doesn’t change the fact that she is a former champion with lots of wins under her belt.

Florence answers FCBA Network reporter Layla Anna-Lee’s question about her FCBA debut and her path to this moment. “I’m really excited for it. I have been lucky enough to start my career by training and sparring with the amazing Scarlett Johansson, getting two wins in the BBU, and now making my debut here in the FCBA while working with a wonderful team at the League of Mighty Women. I’m grateful for these opportunities, but I’m also aware that they come with certain expectations and that I have to work hard to make the best out of them.”

Lacey has a very different attitude towards the interview as she explains how she feels about her opponent and the match-up. “All I know about her is that she is a little Brit brat that thinks she can take on a legend like me, just because she won a couple of matches back home. She is not yet aware that this is the big leagues, so I actually blame her stable. If they want me to spoil their big night, I’ll be happy to do it for them!”

Florence makes her entrance first with her coach Gillian Anderson, who gives her a pat on the shoulder and the crowd welcomes her with a loud cheer. Florence responds by waving and blowing kisses to the crowd as she makes her way to the ring.

She is wearing a black sports bra with white trim, matching trunks, gloves and shoes, while her hair is in a ponytail.

Lacey comes out with her coach besides her and she is receiving a mixed reaction from the fans. Some of them are cheering for the experienced fighter, while others are booing as they probably don’t appreciate her statement before the fight. She doesn’t seem to care though, as she walks down the aisle with a nonchalant look on her face.

She is wearing an all-white fighting attire consisting of a sports bra, hot pants, gloves and shoes, while her hair is also in a ponytail.

Both fighters come to the center of the ring and after listening to the referee’s instructions they go on to touch gloves, but Lacey is a bit aggressive with her bump, which leaves Florence with a puzzled look. Still, they are back to their respective corners and we are ready for 10 rounds of flyweight action.

Fight: Round 1: Lacey confidently steps forward as soon as the bell rings, while Florence looks a bit timid early on. Florence throws a couple of tentative jabs, but the experienced fighter easily bobs and weaves her way through them to get to the inside. Once she gets there, she opens up the combo with a lead uppercut to the body followed by two hooks. After that Lacey gives the young fighter a shoulder bump and lands a double jab-straight combo to her opponent’s midsection. She is not done yet as she pushes Florence towards the rope and changes levels to land a one-two combo up top. The young Brit finally tries to move away, but Lacey clinches with her and she lands a few more punches before the referee can separate them. One or two of those punches looked a bit questionable as they landed around the kidney area.

Lacey quickly tries to get back in after, but Florence lands a jab this time and follows it up with a double jab to make it a triple combo. It only slows Lacey for a few seconds though, as she gets back to attacking inside. The experienced fighter bullies the young prospect around the ring using shoulder bumps, shoves, and clinches. Lacey takes the round easily as Florence walks back to her corner looking a bit shell-shocked.

Gillian tries to calm Florence down and make her focus during the break. “It’s okay, nerves are expected, but you put your first round in FCBA behind you, it’s time to focus now. She is using her experience to get physical with you, but you’re the bigger girl, so if she wants to get physical, just give it back to her. Don’t let her push you around!”

Round 2: Florence looks more relaxed this time, but Lacey still takes the role of aggressor at the start of the round. The experienced fighter eats a couple of jabs along the way, but she gets to the inside again to blast the young prospect’s body with a few more shots. However, as she goes for another shoulder bump, Florence pushes her away and hits her with a jab-cross combo to the face.

Lacey sticks to her tactics as they go for another round full of shoving, pushing and clinching. This time Florence stands her ground and trades punches with Lacey during these physical exchanges, but the experienced fighter still comes out on top as she lands more to add another round to her win column on the scorecard, even if it was with a narrower margin this time.

Gillian gets back to her coaching duties between the rounds. “That was better, but just because I told you to get more physical doesn’t mean that you should fight on her terms. Be physical when needed, but try to impose your own style this round. I know you have the speed and the power for it. Go on and prove it!”

Round 3: Listening to her coach’s advice, Florence increases the tempo of the fight to utilize her speed, hoping to tag her opponent from a distance and make it less of a physical struggle. Her youth and endurance are also coming into play as she seems like the fresher fighter even though she was mostly on the receiving end of this physical fight in the first two rounds.

Florence lands a one-two combo and then steps back as Lacey throws a counter straight to the body. She continues to tag her opponent with either single jabs or short combinations for another two minutes as she circles around the ring. Frustrated with her opponent’s new tactic, Lacey barrels through a few punches to get inside and work the body of Florence as she lands a couple shots of her own. She clinches and pushes the young Brit towards the ropes afterwards, but Florence reverses their position just before they hit the ropes so that Lacey ends up having her back to them. Florence gives a push to create some space and she blasts Lacey with a right cross, but the experienced fighter wraps her arms around her opponent to avoid any further damage and the bell rings as the referee tries to separate them.

It was a much better showing for Florence as she closed the gap on the scorecard, but it’s still not the big round her team was looking for and expecting from her.

Round 4: To Lacey’s dismay, Florence comes out of the gates with that fast paced style again. Looks like her tactic to turn this into a physical fight backfired for the older boxer, as she seems to be having trouble with keeping up with the pace now and we are not even at the halfway point of this fight yet.

Florence lands a double jab and an uppercut, but instead of following it up, she steps back and starts circling her opponent again. She keeps getting in and out of range to land combinations, while Lacey only grazes her opponent once in a while with her counter punch attempts, which are getting slower and sloppier as the round goes on.

We are in the final minute of the round now and Florence is once again on the offensive. She starts with a double jab again, but the follow up cross misses. After stepping back and circling around a little, she attacks again with a jab, but Lacey ducks it and steps inside…she walks right into a big straight by Florence! Lacey goes down! Even Florence didn’t expect it to land this perfectly as she looks surprised for a second before heading towards the neutral corner. 1…2…3… Lacey slowly raises her head and squinting her eyes, trying to focus 4…5…6… she rolls over to her side and gets up on one knee 7…8… she quickly gets back to her feet, only to wobble and fall again towards the ropes 9…10 Lacey gets counted out as she is still trying to climb the ropes.

Official Result: Winner via KO4, Florence Pugh!

Post-Fight: Lacey is arguing with the referee that she was ready to continue, but she clearly wasn’t by the count reached ten and she still isn’t as she keeps holding on to the ropes for support. Her coach comes over to calm her down and gets her back to her corner as the medical team checks up on her. As Lacey gets cleared by the doctor, Florence comes over and tries to be respectful, but Lacey dismisses her with a “whatever!”

After she gets her hand raised by the referee, Florence addresses the crowd. “It was an interesting and intense fight. I wasn’t expecting ‘clinch and shove’ tactics and the fight to become that physical from the start, but I’m glad that I was able to survive the first two rounds and then comeback with an early knockout win. It was surely a valuable learning experience and an important win against an experienced fighter like Lacey. Thank you all for your support!” With that Florence waves to the crowd and sends them a kiss before leaving the ring.

So far so good for the League of Mighty Women as they made it to the half-way point of their introductory event without losing a fight. Can they keep the streak going?
