Audrey Hepburn vs Marilyn Monroe II

Circa early 1958

Results Lookout Writing: GBS & Archer

K.O.Kapowski explains the origins of the fight:

“A couple days after Monroe’s win over Hepburn, Audrey challenged her to a rematch. The studios were weary and were able to delay the bout until after the start of the New Year. Marilyn insisted on another beach bout. That was agreed and as you cane seen by this recently uncovered film, we are on the beach in front of a big producer’s home. A regulation ring has been erected and around it are seats.”

“As you can see, there are many VIPS in the audience: Ava Gardner, Jayne Mansfield, Olivia DeHavilland, Julie Adams, and, son-of-a-gun look at that girl trying to hide behind a floppy: tell me that’s not Bettie Page, Wonder who got her the invite? “Ah, there are more of them: Barbara Stanwyck, Jane Greer, Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds, and over there Jane Russell and Mamie Van Doren,:

“This being Hollywood, there were a lot of bets on this fight, They tell him just before the opening Monroe was listed as the favorite as 5 to 1 and Audrey was at 10-1.”

Audrey comes out and walks to the ring in her new fight robe with dark blue gloves with red laces. After getting between the robes, Audrey lowers and then takes her robe off. She is wearing a red one piece swimsuit.

Marilyn then walks slowly down to the ring in her fight robe with black gloves and white laces. Inside the ring, she doffs her robe off to show her body in a white one piece swimsuit. Always the show off, she poses for the cameras and raises her gloves up in a mock victory salute.

Then, Julie Adams who has been chatting with friends at ringside, removes a long coat and climbs into the ring. She is wearing her white one piece swimsuit with various sergeant stripes over it. She also wears a unbutton black and white ref’s short. She will be the surprise celebrity referee for the bout. The crowd cheers and Julie bows to acknowledge the crowd.

"She's a tricky one," Audrey can be heard observing in amusement. Marilyn just scowls and mutters:: "Scene stealer."

"I am the Top Sergeant of this Fight and you'll obey my instructions," Julie Adams said as the two came to center of the ring for instructions. Both boxers knew of Julie’s boxing skills and She was an unknown just not a Big Name. "Plus she was available and not afraid of angering either Audrey or Marilyn with her calls," KO Kapowski says.

Again just as in the first bout, the first round was a close one again won by Marilyn. In the second, Hepburn went to Monroe’s face instead of her bust and body in this bout. Her straight punches and crosses were seen to be forcing Marilyn back to a neutral corner. Marilyn’s gloves soon were soon held face high and Audrey’s dark blue gloves then went hard into the blonde’s belly. Hepburn soon had Monroe back against the cords with her gloves punching. Julie was closer now as she was expecting something big to happen. Monroe got her arms around Hepburn and soon the two were clinched together. Adams came and broke the women apart and then called the bout back on. Marilyn got out of close contact with Audrey and went to throw some long jabs at the brunette’s face. Some short punches and a brief firefight ended the bout. Audrey won the round widely.

The third round opened with Audrey working her gloves to Marilyn’s face. But Monroe dodged and got in a straight left into Audrey’s belly. That shot stopped Audrey and Marilyn threw a right hook there as well. Audrey’s air was knocked from her and she moved back from the blonde. Monroe used some quick punches to Hepburn’s ribs to force her back to the near ropes. Julie was moving closer to the fighters now. After a right-left combination to her jaw, AND AUDREY GOES DOWN! The crowd rose as the sight of the knockdown. Adams gets between Marilyn and the downed Hepburn and points to get to the closet neutral corner which Monroe does. Once she was there and smiling for the crowd, Julie began the count. Her shirt crept up to show some of Julie’s butt as she knelt and began it. Audrey rose slowly but shook her head to clear it. She rose on her feet and another shake of the head. Julie is at 8 and sees a determined look on Hepburn’s face. She asks her if she can continue. Audrey answers yes. Adams calls the fight back on. Monroe comes out of the neutral corner and the two jab and cross at each other’s face. Hepburn was on the move more as the bell rang. Monroe returned to her corner with a wide win.

The fourth round saw Marilyn come out with some heavy hooks marked for Audrey’s belly. Hepburn was defensive and went for dodging and counter punches. She lit Marilyn up with a big right uppercut to her chin after ducking under a straight left. That was followed by two shots to Monroe’s breasts. Marilyn backed away from Audrey and then a firefight broke out that brought the crowd up on their feet again. Monroe seemed to now be moving Hepburn back. Until the two threw some short punches into the body of the other and then their arms got tangled up. They were then clinched and Julie came right over. She pried them apart and the fight continued. The bell rang after Audrey landed a left cross to the side of Marilyn’s face. The round was scored closely and won by Hepburn.

The fifth round saw both boxers come out slower than before in this bout. Jabs and footwork came from both as the round opened up. Marilyn went for a big left uppercut to Audrey’s chin but Hepburn ducked and threw a left right straight combination to Monroe’s belly. Marilyn was surprised and went to move back from those dark blue gloves of Audrey. Her gloves were face high and couldn’t help her when Hepburn hit two hooks to Marilyn’s breasts. Monroe went to clinch but got two uppercuts to her chin for that move. Adams came closer now seeing those punches land. Marilyn’s head snapped from those punches and Audrey smiled. She went with a right uppercut and left hook to her belly next. Monroe groaned from those shots and seemed to be wavering. Hepburn hit her with a straight right to her face and left hook. MONROE GOES DOWN! Julie watches the blonde fall and shows Audrey to the nearest neutral corner. Audrey is there and Julie then kneels and begins the count. Marilyn stirs at 4 and is on her elbows at 7. But she is leaning against the ropes when 10 is reached. Julie calls for the bell and the bout is over.

Audrey walks out of the neutral corner and soon is stopped by photographers and fight fans for pictures.

Monroe is now sitting in her corner, being attended to. She can be heard complaining: “I beat the count, the fight shouldn’t have been stopped.”

(K.O. Kapowski says: “I asked Julie Adams about that and she said ‘It was NOT a fast. Eve if she had beaten it, I would have stopped the fight, I could see it her eyes: she was in no condition to go on. She just hated to lose. I told that myself that night. After a while, she accepted it and never heard anything more about it from her.”)

Hepburn comes to middle of the ring as Adams calls for the microphone.

Julie makes the announcement and soon raises Audrey’s right glove.

Adams and Hepburn then pose for some pictures. Then Julie moves off and Audrey poses for some pictures on her own.

She goes over to Marilyn’s corner after and checks on her. Again these two big stars and boxers share a hug. Fight fans love this and cheer this show of sportswomanship and respect.

Audrey would then go to her corner and a few more pictures were taken. Then she left the ring.

(“I think Audrey’s gesture soothed Marilyn’s unhappiness and it was a good fight. Audrey winning shouldn’t have been surprise, she had fought Marilyn hard in the first, but didn’t have much boxing luck. This might he made her own luck and won. Just wish I had been there to make a bet on her, I hear Olivia DeHavilland really cleaned up. She had lost to Audrey herself so she bet on her this time and came away with a tidy sum. Jayne Mansfield didn’t bet, but she went home smiling: a bad night for Monroe was a good night for her. Always a lot of undercurrents in these big Hollywood fights,’ K.O, Kapowski concluded his comments.
