Pre-Fight:

It’s a late night at the Free Punchers facility. No press. No crowd. Only four people are in the room. Amy Smart, assistant trainer for the Free Punchers stable, the Free Puncher’s director of scouting Rhea Seehorn, a referee, and Kiernan Shipka.

Smart and Shipka warm themselves up in opposite corners, Smart with official Free Punchers gear on. A blue sports bra with gold trim and matching shorts, plus blue gloves. Shipka has her own gear, a pair of red gloves, a black sports bra, and red shorts.

Rhea sits outside of the ring with a stopwatch and a bell. She has her legs crossed as her steely gaze perfectly captures the entire ring. She watched Kiernan warm up, trying to pick up positives as well as negatives in every single movement she makes. Kiernan meanwhile realizes that this is a chance to impress a stable, something she hasn’t gotten a shot at in a couple years.

Kiernan looks her opponent and potential future trainer up and down. She has size on Keirnan, but the younger blonde has more recently fought and should have an edge in speed and agility.

R1:

The bell rings and the two fighters come out of their corner. Kiernan wants to impress and show her 2-4 record isn’t the only thing that defines her. She swats at Amy, but finds the size advantage to be a bit of an issue when it comes to actually connecting. Smart, despite her age, moves fairly fluidly and counters Kiernan’s jabs with some of her own that tag the free agent.

Amy’s reach continues to be an issue for Kiernan, who can’t get off anything clean. Amy though not really pressing the issue. She wants to goad Kiernan into a mistake. It’s her job to expose any flaws in the young boxer’s game, and other than her reach disadvantage she hasn’t found anything glaring.

The round ends and Rhea scribbles on a notepad, 10-9 Smart.

R2:

Shipka is disappointed with the first round, so she comes out firing in the second. She slips in and out of Smart’s range. She gets a few nice combos inside to Amy’s torso and then backs off. Kiernan proving to be both slippery and annoying.

Amy can’t quite get anything going and can’t stop a smooth-moving and agile Kiernan from carving her up inside. A late round connection to the ribs stops Shipka in her tracks though and the round ends.

19-19

R3:

Kiernan getting more aggressive, but as a result Amy takes aim at breaking down the smaller girl’s guard. Pounding away at the forearms and biceps, Amy is able to move into slipping a smooth right cross into Kiernan’s chin. The smaller blonde bounces back well, though and continues trying to attack.

This opens her up. Kiernan lands a little combo, but Amy responds with a rough one-two cross to the chin. Shipka in trouble as Amy’s jabs slice through her guard. Her head snapping back over and over as she gets bullied into the corner. Her guard comes up and Amy bangs rights and lefts into her sides. Shipka lets out a piercing wail of pin.

Rhea sees the the stopwatch go over three minutes, but refrains from ringing the bell. She lets the round go on, her gaze transfixed on Kiernan. She gives Amy a nod.

Amy brings her right fist back and rocks Kiernan on the chin. The smaller girl almost goes down… but manages to stay on her feet. Rhea rings the bell.

29-28 Smart.

R4:

The trainer has her potential protege on her heels to start the fourth round. A few slick rights into the ribs and Kiernan is doubled over, clutching her side in pain. Amy with an overhand left that nearly drops Kiernan.

But she stays up…

And she finds an uppercut from her position that splits Amy’s guard. The bigger blonde is on her heels now. Kiernan doesn’t need the time to recover with her younger, more easily bounce-backible body. She goes on the attack, and cuts through Amy’s dragging guard. Rights and lefts pepper Amy’s cheek and as the bell finally rings it’s Kiernan who has turned the tides in the fight.

Rhea has it 38-38.

R5:

Kiernan finds a rhythm. She avoids Amy’s slowed strikes and counters beautifully with rights and lefts of her own. Amy’s guard is fading. Kiernan’s power is stinging. She dominates for the first minute, and then just barely into the second Shipka sees Amy’s jaw wide open.

She plants, pivots, and hurls a left uppercut that easily puts Amy on her back. Kiernan backs off as she looks down at her opponent, hopeful she won’t get up. Amy meanwhile is blinking a lot. She shakes her head as she starts to sit up. She reaches for the ropes but then falls back down to her butt when the ref is at seven. She collapses and the ref reaches the ten count and waves their arms.

Winner via KO in Round 5: Kiernan Shipka

Post-Fight:

Kiernan helps Amy back up to her feet. Smart gives her an appreciative tap on the head and a hug. Rhea puts down her notepad and walks up to the edge of the ring.

“Congratulations,” Rhea says. “That was quite impressive. We’ll be in touch. In the meantime, here.”

Rhea slides a key card over to Kiernan’s feet.

“We’re covering your stay tonight, top floor suite… apparently it’s quite a view,” says Rhea.

After Kiernan’s gloves are finished getting cut off by the refs she picks up the card, “Thanks!”

Later that night after getting checked out by the Free Puncher’s medical staff, Kiernan showers in her brand new hotel room. She’s impressed by the accommodations and looks out over the city in her underwear. Stretching, she feels confident in her performance today and feels she made enough of an impression to be offered a contract. Still, she’s exhausted and the soreness is starting to creep in. Her arms in particular sting as a result of Amy’s concentrated attack on her guard. But, a win is a win. Even if it’s unofficial.

Suddenly there’s a clicking noise at her door. The door swings open and Kiernan swings around and sees Rhea, still in her outfit from a few hours ago, step through. Kiernan wears a confused look on her face, and modestly tries to cover herself up.

“Rhea, what are you…?” begins Kiernan.

“It’s the second part of your evaluation,” says Rhea with her hands and her hips. “You better hope you still have some fight in you…”
