Robyn Lawley v Lucy Pinder(Words: Sceej / Results: Lookout!)

Some serious talk in the boxing press that this fight ought not go forward! Pinder giving away nine inches in height and fifty pounds in weight to say nothing of the fact that Lawley has been on a run, but the plucky Brit boldly predicting victory! For her part, the big Aussie is almost sheepish “Look, I posted an open contract? I never dreamt that someone so … errrr … small would step up?”

Fight Night

Lawley to ring to strains of “Godzilla” by Blue Oyster Cult, clad in red boots, gloves, sports bra and shorts, accompanied by Scrubby McGee and Jenny “Mac the Knife” McCarthy. Pinder, accompanied by Melissa Messenger, to ring in Union Jack themed shorts and sports bra with blue boots and gloves. As fans of the McCarthy/Beckinsale hatefest are aware, the Union Jack is like a red flag to the little blonde bull and referees instructions frequently interrupted by J-Mac yapping at British contingent.

Round 1: Pinder strategy as anticipated - speed and movement and movement and speed! Circling the more ponderous Aussie, using jab as a range finder, not scoring flush but dictating tempo. Robyn content to stalk, pawing with jab. Mid round, Lucy gambles with straight right lead and snaps big girl;s head back and bring’s crowd roaring to their feet, Crowd overreacts to the shot but everyone loves an underdog and as Chamberlain ruefully said, “Nobody roots for Goliath.” Plucky Brit able to steal the first round just by being active.

Round 2: Robyn gets light slap on cheek and admonition to “wake up, goil, fight’s started!” from McGee in the corner. Robyn out of corner, purposeful behind her dukes, hounding Pinder, cutting ring off and forcing her into a corner, then bludgeoning with steady barrage of lefts and rights - a lof of them crashing into forearms and shoulders of the Brit’s guard, but sheer impact is rattling her badly. When Pinder looks to battle out of corner, she’s pushed back two handed. Entire round fought in about an eight foot square as Lucy Pinder is being processed. Back to corner breathing heavily from the mouth.

Round 3: Corner telling Pinder she NEEDS to do something to get Lawley’s respect and get her off of her. At the bell, Lucy across ring quick and again gambles with the big right hand and again rings Godzilla’s bell … but Lawley able to shrug it off! Buffeting Pinder to ropes with left hook … hook to the ribs … hook to the temple … hook to the rib. Lawley steps back for punching room and breaks out the hammer … thundering right hand blasting through smaller woman’s guard … and another … and another …. Pinder frozen in place. Lawley turns to ref, looking for stoppage but ref lets it go! Another right … and another! Again Lawley looks to ref and ref barks “fight!”. Crowd booing and calling for stoppage … and here comes the towel! Corner stops the fight, and into ring to gather up a pale and shattered looking Pinder. Lawley to corner with head down, shaking head ruefully.

Post fight: Lawley declines to meet with press, issues statement praising Pinder’s courage and regretting that she ever took the fight.
