4. Kate Beckinsale vs Rachel McAdams III

BEFORE:
One fight apiece on both these women’s resumes, as legends Kate Beckinsale and Rachel McAdams just don’t know when to quit.

“Look, I respect Kate for still gettin’ in the ring at the age of 48. I’m not that far off from that number myself, and I can only dream of doing the things she’s doing at that age,” Rachel says with a knowing smile earlier at the press junket. “We’ve faced each other twice now in our long careers, so I’m glad she reached out for this rubber match.”

“Call it unfinished business,” Kate laughs back. “Of course, I’m not going to be as active as before. I have very little left to prove here in the league. But when I step back in the ring, I’m gonna be as fired up as I can be to kick some arse.”

Big time Becks is still looking toned and hot as a fiddle as she enters the arena later in a red sports top and white long tights, sporting shiny black gloves. The Head Vixen is setting an example for us all as she closes in on the magic number 50. Up next, McAdams strides into the arena wearing a pink crop top blouse, showing off her toned midriff, as she strides down the ramp in long grey tights and black boots. McAdams may not have fared well this year alone (currently on a three-fight losing streak), but her opponents were all top-tiered competitors, and she looks to prove to everyone she still has what it takes to win tonight.

Referee calls both ladies to the centre of the ring and spouts off the rules in a methodical manner: ten rounds of Bantamweight action, with the winner declared by KO or TKO. Kate and Rachel actually smile at each other and bump gloves, before heading back to their corners to await the bell. Wave of the hand and HERE WE GO!

ROUND 1:
Beckinsale looks focused, building off her induction into the Hall-of-Fame last year as she flies back into renewed action here tonight, poking at Rachel’s face between the arms and landing several shots all over the face and body. McAdams may have the advantage here in the ring, though, being younger and slightly more experienced, the blonde actress intercepting those jabs before working backwards to a more comfortable range, and fighting back. Kate lets out a yelp of her own when a one-two combo stings her to the lips, but at least the British actress has the good sense to weave out of the line of fire for the rest of the round, which she takes by a wide margin.

ROUND 2:
Rachel struggles to make headway in the first minute, with Kate slowly tightening the noose and pressing inwards, pounding away on the arms and body with steady one-two combos, but this time facing a little more trouble when Rachel keeps her distance and fires back with the occasional bomb to her face. Kate grunts again as McAdams goes after her body next, that almost full decade of age going against her as she wisely tries to sap her opponent of stamina early on. It works in the second half of the fight, as Beckinsale takes another hook to her side and ribs with a biff and baff, sending her into full retreat. McAdams is packing power in that smaller stature of hers, chasing after Kate in the remaining seconds of the round, which she earns back in spades.

ROUND 3:
Beckinsale as the aggressor makes a lot of sense, but this round, she’s forced on the defensive as more attacks crowd out her vision. Rachel seizes the previous advantage and gives chase, exploding out of the corner at the bell and immediately harassing Kate with rapid combinations to the arms, and snagging several to the head. Kate is forced to cover up in the first minute but keeps her cool, finally turning the tide with a right cross delivered straight to the blonde’s nostrils, and another sent flying into the mouth to stop Rachel’s wild advance unchecked. Rachel looks somewhat hurt, rallying at a safe distance, and the two women trade jabs for the remainder, with Beckinsale still struggling to keep pace. Close round swings back to the Brit, however, which might embolden her efforts further.

ROUND 4:
Rachel’s eager to pursue, however, not letting Kate get away with murder. Kate delivers a rocking hand to the face in the first minute, but her celebration is short-lived when McAdams grits her teeth and fires back with one of her own, turning the Brit’s head the other way with a grunt of pain. Cougars go at each other in the center of the ring, torturing each other with messy, painful blasts to the face, chest and body, lefts and rights flying at the other woman in tandem. It’s Rachel’s never-say-die attitude that ultimately wins her this exchange, however, landing a crunching shot to the side of Kate’s chin and momentarily stunning her. Kate tries to regroup but gets hammered one more time with a straight punt to the nose, and Rachel gives chase, still jabbing fast at her head. Not much else for Kate to do but fall back to her defensive line, staving off certain disaster till the bell rings.

ROUND 5:
Kate, however, spoils the strawberry blonde’s party with a clean swipe across her face early in the first minute, just as Rachel attempted to rush in and finish her off. Bad news for Rach instead, as her attack is absorbed on the arms and the abs, with Kate waiting for the opportune moment to bash a hook clean across her face, and send another couple of uppercuts into her body, before RACHEL SUDDENLY GOES DOWN, grunting and hugging her midsection as she collapses to all fours! It’s a sudden KNOCKDOWN in the second minute here! Kate gives her efforts a quick nod, but Rachel is already pushing her way up to her knees, then gingerly steadying her balance by the count of 8.

That’s fine by Kate, who gets to push into the remaining rounds and finish her foe off properly. Bell rings to resume and Becks is back in control, moving forward with renewed purpose: slow and steady shots off Rachel’s flanks as she’s almost pushed into the ropes for more punishment. All Rachel can do is grunt and carry, run and hide for the rest of this round, trying to stop multiple jabs from landing on her head, till the bell saves her from a second and final knockdown.

ROUND 6:
But McAdams ain’t gonna lie down and roll over, however. She finds her second wind and turns the tide , with Kate forced to deal with her sudden aggression and rush-forward tactics. Kate groans as she gets pinned to the ropes early in the round, each occurrence seeing McAdams shove her shoulders into her collarbone, and pelvis into pelvis, leather whapping below off her toned belly and chest. Kate shoves the American off her in the nick of time, but only has seconds of breathing space before she crashes right back into the close quarters clinch. McAdams of course not coming out of this melee unscathed, taking several shots across her forehead from a desperate Kate, who at least prevents a shutout round by eschewing fighting norms and just helping herself to any exposed hole in Rachel’s defences, including her gloves shoved into her body, up into the chin, up until the bell rings and both cougars are gestured back to their corners, looking spent.

ROUND 7:
First minute has Kate rediscovering some good rhythm, bracing for another of Rachel’s rushes before firing off more combos at her rapidly reddening face. McAdams is also running out of steam and she knows it, practically giving up the first two minutes by not being able to react fast enough to some of Beckinsale’s attacks. The Brit is working wonders with whatever she has left, pulling back a left hand to feint before socking the blonde across the face with a follow-up right. Well, two can play at that game, as Rachel shimmies her arms forward, one arm pulled back to punch and giving off the impression she’s about to deliver a knockout blow of her own. Kate weaves downwards… and right into the oncoming uppercut that accompanies the ruse - KAPOW! Kate sees stars as it catches her firmly on the chin, and all of a sudden, the Vixen’s head honcho is wavering dangerously off towards the ropes, her knees bent slightly and balance wobbly… Rachel RUSHES in to pound away some more, her lefts and rights crunching into Kate’s button of a nose, before finally sending the Brit crashing DOWN TO HER SIDE in a return, brutal KNOCKDOWN! Kate looks on, hella embarrassed, already trying to sit up and recover… but each time she tries to push upwards, her legs give way, and the rest of her body collapses against the ropes over and over! The referee has partial sympathy in his eyes as he waves his hands high overhead at the 10-count, signalling this third bout is as good as over!!

Official Decision: Rachel McAdams defeats Kate Beckinsale via KO7!

AFTER:
“We both gave it our all,” Rachel says in the post-fight, smiling widely and looking ragged and red. “Kate’s one hell of a fighter, even for her age. I’d be happy to do this again if she’s still fighting in the coming years.”

Kate on the other hand looks on, slightly disappointed, but appreciative as well. “Like Rachel said, I have no regrets. We both put on a hell of a show tonight, and one woman came out on top. I don’t know how much longer I can box in the ring, but I’m gonna keep pushing till I can’t.”
