BOXING ON THE BEACH

Before: “I when I first pushed in Katherine that she was too big for me,” Winstead admits in prefight. “She’d hit me and it was like a welterweight slamming down on me—I couldn’t handle all that beef. Jenny’s going to feel it.”

O’Dell chatty with press, grinning and lighthearted—former lightweight champ very candid about her decision to return to the beach. “Fighting isn’t just about the money for me,” Jenny shrugs. “I proved I could handle myself in the FCBA, but there are a lot of politics, and egos, and backstage dramas involved that I never enjoyed. You know how hardcore surfer’s talk about surfing? Well that’s what beach-fighting is like for me: when you knock a girl out, and she’s lying there baking under a hot sun, and you can smell her suntan lotion and sweat in a light sea breeze—it’s special. I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want in boxing, and right now, this is it.”

Jenny in a black bikini (“Shark”), black gloves. Mary in lemon yellow bikini, white gloves. Standard ring set up on sand—bleachers for seats. Several beach-circuit veterans in attendance (Angelica Bridges, Stacy Kamano, Kiana Tom et al)  all giving Jenny a mocking charity when blonde is announced.

During R1; Girls touch gloves, circle right, then jenny steps into Mary’s midriff right/left. Grunt from Winstead, but she’s right back into Jenny’s a tight little left hook to the tummy, then both girls stuff home short, tucking right hands to tummy. Gentle counterclockwise rotation as girls lean in, trade dutiful leather down stairs—no rushing, all very orderly as each girl takes her turn on the other’s body with one or two tuff blows. Minute mark—Jenny pushes off, steps away to digest the into she’s learned: spirited Mary steps-and-fetches Jenny a wide hook, startling the former champ to chops. Jenny covers up earmuff: eats an uppercut. Mary wide-eyed, teeth bared, advancing—hooks Jenny’s ear, punches thump-thump on jenny’s paunch, then MARTY GOES JUGG! Winstead releasing the hounds o Jenny early, chugging away enthusiastically to the O’Dell rack—Jenny momentarily dazed, takes a rude buffeting. Down the stretch, Jenny covers up, slides to her right along the ropes: Mary steps with, paralleling Jenny’s course—brunette staying on her girl, beating at Jenny rights and lefts to flanks, trying to wrestle her way back inside to sample more rack at the bell. Mary turning away, fairly skipping back to her corner: Jenny shook up, roughed up in a Winstead first.

R2: Jenny off her stool like a rocket—pancake tackling Mary back into her own corner: blonde stuffs half a dozen lefts and rights into firm brunette HUP-HUP=HUP before Mary can even catch her breath. Corner mugging—Jenny on Mary—Winstead on her heels, unable to get her weight forward: O’Dell bumping and slugging, bodying up as necessary to keep Mary pinned down. Winstead grimacing, covering up, twisting side to side to help distribute the awful body bombardment—Jenny hammers away bell to bell, softening up the kid’s midsection and putting some mileage on Winny’s legs for the long haul/

R3: Mary takes a page out of Jenny’s book—WINSTEAD with the pancake tackle takes Jenny HARD into the BSE corner: O’Dell’s right shoulder hitting turnbuckle, head bobbing around. Winstead shoving for separation, then chugging—hard-working brunette punches beat against Jenny’s hips, ribs, tummy and chest as the blonde rights herself at ropes. Jenny dukes up—Mary leaning in with her head, punishing her blonde downstairs—torrid punching buckles Jenny’s knees, wrenches a breathy gasp from her lips, O’Dell grimacing, trying to slide-right: Mary reaches under Jenny’s arms, bodying former champ deep to ropes, refusing to let JOD slink away! More tummy taken, then MARY GOES RACK! Winstead obviously following the Garner gameplan to some extent—stunning Jenny with a romping jailbreak on jugg, then harvesting chin with clubbing shots as O’Dell loosens up. Wonderful, methodical beatdown issued—Mary snarling prettily, reaching in, stacking up, going body, going jug, then reaching in to reset—Jenny ragdolled, badly worked over through 2 minutes. Down the stretch, O’Dell avoids the shutout with groggy heroics off the ropes, trading bombastic lefts and rights in classic beach-style brawling at the bell. Bridges’ hooting audible on tape as Jenny’s wincing back to her corner.

R4: Jenny flushed, eyes narrowed: she’s in a real fight despite all predictions to the contrary. O’Dell unpacking a jab—not overdoing it, but just being first, getting Mary to cover up rather than rush in, then sweeping the right roundhouse to Winstead’s waistline. Jenny pivoting right—getting her palms on Winny: nudges and pushes helping to keep Jenny I charge as she turns Mary midring, systematically working her over. Subtle stuff—Winstead may not even understand she’s being controlled as she turns, keeps her guard up, answers back in spots to jenny’s midsection. Both girls getting off, bit sunkissed bodies well spanked—but Jenny dictating action in the fourth.

R5: Wild beach slugging midring—crowd roaring as girls paste away with no thought of defence. JENNY’S EATING PUNBCHES! O’Dell rocked and stunned as effervescent Mary wades forward—wide lefts and rights buffeting Jenny’s face side to side.  Jenny tossing back, but getting beta to lefts and rights—she faces into blows, stubbornly giving up canvas until ropes stop her retreat. Jenny stooping forward to clinch, but she’s HURT! O’Dell open-mouthed, sputtering, can’t pull Mary close: WINSTEAD ROMPS TO JUGG! Mary crying out as her fists stamp away to Jenny’s breasts—blonde sitting groggily in the ropes, eyelashes fluttering—SHE CAN’T HOLD WINSTEAD OFF! Extra punches pile into the O’Dell breadbasket, carom off her chin and JENNJY GOES DOWN! O’Dell huffing and puffing on all fours: Bridges, Jenny Mac and others roar to their feet as O’Dell teeters on the brink of an upset. Jenny creaky to her feet—takes a woozy 8: HERE COMES MARY! Winstead u leashing—not every punch a well-leveraged gem, but she’s batting and swinging at Jenny with raw KO lust: groggy blonde can only earmuff up, crouch forward and sop this stuff up! Mary Winstead STRONG on Jenny—brunette pounding and battering her blonde with strong, stroking blows at the bell, Jenny tremble-bodied, steadying herself in the ropes, eyes glassy as she watches Mary whooping and hollering back to her corner.

R6: Mary plows right back in, but she’s arm weary: Jenny able to soak the first pumping body blows and shove Mary back outside. O’Dell grim-faced and hurting: she’s hunkering down, putting her jab on Mary, stepping right to keep the kid’s feet moving, Jenny opening up a subtle angle on Mary, lands a clean right cross over Winny’s left shoulder: Mary buckles, but refuses to acknowledge the blow, then straighten to hook Mary’s chin. Girls trade right hands, but Jenny’s is first: Mary’s sails over top and WINSTREAD’S HURT! Winny’s lithe body whipsawing, suddenly all loose, hands dropping: Jenny quick-sets her feet, swipes a wide timing hook upside Mary’s head to range-in, then drops the pulverizing straight right onto Mary’s face. Winny’s head kicks back—mouthpiece shooting straight up into the air and MARY GOES DOWN! Winstead flat on her back, arms outstretched—as KO’d as a girl can be. Jenny’s chest heaving, legs unsteady as she glares down at the glistening brown body, relaxing into stupor under the hot California sun. KO6, Jenny O’Dell.

After: O’Dell tested hard in her beach re-debut: Mary coming in bubbling over with enthusiasm gets her brawl on and gives the former champ a terrible fright before Jenny could put her foot down. “That’s beach boxing for you,” a relieved, upbeat Jenny says in the postfight. “It brings out the best in young girls, and nobody’s safe. Mary hurt me and got on me, and she nearly finished what she started today. I know she wants to fight PPV and let me tell you—she brings her beach game to the FCBA and she’s gonna shock some of those girls!”
