Before: Highly touted newcomer Alba gets veteran Wuhrer for Maim title--Kari getting the short end of the promotion, but relishing her second-citizen status: “I’ve been written off before, I know Maxim’s got a lot of money invested in Jessica, I know she’s talented, but she’s not where they think she is yet. I’m going to be right in front of her all night and she’s going to get discouraged when she can’t take me out. As soon as I see doubt in her eyes, I’m going to cruise in Jessica tonight--watch for it.” Black push uip, black nylon jogging shorts for Wuhrer, red cotton two piece for Alba.

During r1: Lithe beauties meet at center ring, pretty conventional stuff--jab, cross, hook. Alba slicker, well-oiled look to her combinations and classier footwork put her ahead as Wuhrer throws about the same, but connects on a much lower percentage. Workmanlike round for Alba.

R2: Wuhrer drilling lead right hands stings Jessica’s pride, prompting Alba to trade. Two stand on wide-spread feet, leaning side to side to crank haymakers and ALBA GETS HURT! Jessica soaking up a head-torquing right hand flush on the jaw goes glassy-eyed and Wuhrer takes over. Hamfisted beating the rest of the way--Kari lashing her punches up into Alba’s body, or clubbing overhand rights around the brunette’s guard--Kari walking her girl down as Alba reels, Jessica battered around the ring, shows her inexperience by not clinching--also shows her grit in finishing on her feet.

R3: Kari able to stalk flat footed, showing a Teddy Reid look as she loops wrap-around lefts and rights, just range finding with the jab preparatory to lanky limbed power shots. Alba showing class--slipping a lot of leather, moving to open space and countering in between Wuhrer’s wide blows, but Kari’s pressure carries the round.

R4: Alba continues to bo smart, showing up Kari in the leg department, supple upper body writhing making Wuhrer miss and Jessica able to retake the initiative off wide Kari over-swings. by the final minute, Jessica’s grooving a smooth Trinidad-esque hook/uppercut to good effect--Wuhrer proving as tough as her talk takes some good shots without a backward step.

R5,6: Jessica continues to circle, working primarily with her left hand and reducing Wuhrer’s offense to a desperate muddle of wild looping blows that glance harmlessly off well-turned shoulders or miss altogether. The sixth goes as shutout for Alba and it’s pretty to watch--Jessica licking the left uppercut between Wuhrer’s careless guard, the turning over the hook to turn Kari’s head or sticking it into Kari’s flat tummy with a wet “PATT”--Wuhrer falling a full steps behind, plodding forward but getting outclassed as Jessica pours it on.

R7: Jessica standing her ground more--thinks she has Kari worn down, but Wuhrer teaches her otherwise. Spanking exchanges punctuate a rousing first couple of minutes, both girls getting clocked as Wuhrer stubbornly answers every hook with a straight right hand. Final minute, Alba’s slender legs give way with a dropping bend as Kari’s clubbing right takes its toll and Jessi falters back to the ropes. Kari with a good 30 seconds, walks in with her hands down and whip-arms the right hand hard across Jessica’s belly, looping back with the crashing left that skids over top Alba’s back as the youngster crumples forward. Dominant Wuhrer at the bell smiles--she sees the doubt she was looking for as a beaten-up Alba winces, minces back to her corner.

R8: Jessica steps up and proves her pedigree this round. Kari with a good stalking first minute looks very confident, but midway through, Alba rocks Wuhrer with the licking left uppercut, left hook and Kari’s hurt! Jessica now piling on as Kari backpedals, splashing lefts and rights with that slinging Trinidad delivery--Wuhrer’s breaking down. Final minute sees a besieged Kari Wuhrer dig in at the ropes, covering up and Alba just beats her to a pulp. Fierce lefts and rights beat down Kari’s defenses, leaving her helpless as double-digit connects start to bash home. Alba bellowing in triumph at the bell as Kari lolls droopy-lidded in a corner--ref stepping in pre-emotively to back Jessica off.

R9: Alba showing good judgement, She was Wuhrer going again early from a series of loose-limbed lefts and rights to the head, but Kari answers back at the high stakes brawling of the early rounds returns. Alba adjusts, stepping out and making Wuhrer chase--youngster’s mobility superior--she’s able to walk Kari into right hand potshots to the bell.

R10: Shutout Jessica Alba, putting a disheartening beating on Kari Wuhrer this round. Kari can cover up, but she can’t get off as Alba spends a minute luring her forward, then a minute backing her up to finish with Wuhrer’s back to the ropes, Kari’s breaking down, taking combinations and Alba goes to the breasts with a meanspirited gusto, hammering away with free-swinging lefts and rights in rising arcs from the waist, smiling crookedly as Wuhrer can’t prevent the abuse. Alba pouring it on after the bell is pushed away and a sullen Kari Wuhrer sags into the ropes. UD10 for the winner, and NEW champion, Jessica Alba.

After: Alba shows a second and third dimension in this fight, unpacking a variety of tools to use Kari up at the end. Wuhrer’s hardnosed effort had Jessica shaken in occasion, but Alba never let her inner punk show, staying mentally tough even when Kari was getting off with authority, Maxim featuring the fight prominently in print--a multi-page treatment of Alba’s controversial jug mugging with the fight well in hand the source of hard feelings after this bout.
