KO6 Ashanti

Douglas was surprisingly upbeat following her sobering beat down at the hands of  veteran Courtney Thorne-Smith. “ learned a lot,” Douglas would tell reporters. “I know I’m better for it, and Combs has got to pay. “it’s the kind of talk that 50% of the time young and comers utter to their peril. Fortunately for Douglas, this was the other 50%.

Combs came forward as she always does, holding her hands up dutifully, stepping warily forward and looking to bring the fight to Ashanti on the ropes. Douglas was relaxed, showing Combs that lead left shoulder, keeping the left hand low, right hand at chest height, bending supple at the waist to slip and roll, From the outset it was obvious and apparent that Ashanti had before her the ideal opponent--a stand and deliver walk-in girl with no punch, and even less head movement.

Minute after minute, a happy, focused Ashanti would lure Holly in and pick her part, Combs would keep up a steady patter of punches, but it was all pushy, pokey stuff--Ashanti easily blocking and rolling it and  getting back into her quarry with more serious leather. Combs was right there for Douglas, suffering mightily in her tummy as the counter hook ate up chunks of Combs guts or clipped her jaw sharp and clean. Ashanti’s right uppercut began to score at will and at times, Douglas would spin her girl, put Holly’s back to the ropes and go right at her with the crowd and her corner cheering her on. Combs would go out on her shield, badly worn down by the sixth and final round, trudging dutifully into punches and no longer offering effective resistance. A series of jolting Douglas lefts--hooks to the soft tummy and taut uppercuts on the chin--finally sat Combs down in a daze, unable to rise for the count. Good moment for Ashanti --she gets to prance and strut the ring with the crowd cheering and a beaten oppoent sitting stunned on the canvas in a puddle of defeat.
