Boxing After Dark

Before; Selma wins pre-fight outright when she quips: “Kirsten--loved your work in ‘Wall-E’. Oh wait--that was little blocks of garbage. Sorry--my mistake,” Dunst left crimson and mute with rage, sputtering in response. “This is a good scrap,” says special guest commentator Claire Danes at ringside. “I’ve battled Dunst in the past and I’ve had Selma in camp many times. Kirsten’s really one of the great wasted talent stories in the FCBA. Her skills have eroded, but at one time, we had her as a TOP 10 threat at flyweight. It’ll be interesting to see how she handles Selma, who can be a slick little piece of trouble in the ring. Blair’s whole thing will be shaking the ‘understudy’ complex she’s had--especially in this fight because Kirsten ALWAYS thinks she’s the biggest star in the room and fights with a lot of confidence. We actually had to dismiss Selma from our last camp because she was getting a little mouthy, and she wasn’t responding immediately to whistle-breaks. When a girl’s doing that kind of things, it usually means she’s chafing a little at the sparring partner role and wants to break out on her own. So we’ll see: Kirsten will definitely find out if Selma really wants this.” Blair tuff/sexy in black cotton tank top and boy cut panties; small black work out gloves; bobbed hair black and shiny. Kirsten in butterscotch plaid bikini with bra-style top and low-rise hipster bottoms; blonde pigtails to both sides; small black workout gloves.

During R1: Wild West shoot out--both girls swinging away with KO bids early. Selma clipped and rocked a right hand in early trade--she reels to ropes, dips and spins her way out of trouble as Kirsten misses a blazing right hand over top. Midway through, Blair returns the favour with slinging rights and lefts near the ropes, clobbering Dunst’s face and spilling her into her own corner. Both girls badly depleted down the stretch: Blair regrouping, working behind her jab and imposing order to sale away a free-swinging first. Ruffled feather all ‘round--both girls trembling on their stools, rattled at the unexpected violence and bear quick exits in the exchanges.

R2: Selma showing the pace--assumes wide stance--boxes Kirsten this round. Blair calming herself, eyes narrowed with concentration. Slight forward posture, weight on front (left) foot as she pumps stick, pivots left--right hand curled against her breasts for use “in case of emergency”. Dunst turning, dukes moving from her chest to her eyebrows. She’s blocking shots, receiving the odd blow to her face--not doing much offensively, just trying to cut the ring off on limber Selma. On several occasions--when Kirsten pushes forward--Selma’s sliding in behind the blonde, loosely hugging her up around the tummy, or applying a gentle full nelson till ref’s break. Kirsten vexed, whining about this stuff: Selma responds at one point by gripping blonde waistband at the back with her left hand, tugging Kristen backwards and strutting past her to disengage. Easy shutout, Blair; she picks away from long range, starts the process of busting up her blonde through 2.

R3: Selma getting comfy. Dunst applying no pressure up the middle: Selma able to relax in wide stance, push off the ball of the back (right) foot and keep a long, stiff left jab on Kirsten. Dunst chin tucked, dukes at temples: she’s sullen, having a hard time negotiating Selma’s educated jab. Midway through, Blair extends on an oily-smooth one-two up the middle, the right hand sliding through Kirsten’s guard, punching back her face with small-glove PAK!--momentarily stunning pigtailed beauty. Kirsten hurt: Selma shows more good schooling--pivoting to her right, dipping her left shoulder and lifting a pair of heartless left uppercuts PIK! PIK! Into Kirsten’s sternum underneath. Dunst shook, eyes distraught--she moves away, grimacing--issuing a don’t-hurt-me jab as Selma walks her down through 3.

R4: Kirsten regroups, jabs-with, and scores a chewy right/left firm to Selma’s midsection, forcing brunette over to defense. Blair’s dukes at her temples as she folds forward: Dunst easing to her right, jabbing at brunette guard, snarling as she leans into clean right up right crosses, Blair bobbing at the waist, getting under Kirsten’s respectable rights: Dunst adjusting by hopping in close and working midriff with biting right/left combos. Selma grunting from body work--pushing Kirsten off by her shoulders and circling away: no question blonde’s become the aggressor, taking the initiative in the fourth.

R5: Spirited stuff from both ladies; lips curl back from teeth; eyes blaze with bad intentions as whistling rights and scything hooks are deployed. Long graceful bodies bend deep at waists--girls becoming hard to hit clean as each times the other well. Dunst able to score underneath with ringing rights/lefts, testing the taut muscle of Selma’s flat abdominals. Blair sliding back in her stance, creating distance, then nibbling away jabs and right hands up top as Dunst works her way back in close. Hard to score--but cleanest, heaviest blows of the round undoubtedly Kirsten’s body shots.

R6: Smooth graceful exchanges early as girls take turns covering up, then emerging with sleek counters. Blair rolling shots in her creampuff, then arching her back to slide a right uppercut across Kirsten’s face. Dunst limber to her foe’s waist--popping hips, twisting torso into lashing shots--pigtails whipping side to side in sympathy. Down the stretch--Kirsten dips in close with a short right hand to chin, startling Blair. Dunst slips her left hand into Selma’s waistband at the front, tugs her forward, spins her counterclockwise, then smites her a chopping right hand to mouth, sending Selma reeling to ropes. Blair stunned, covering up face-in-gloves: Kirsten moves in big-girl--left hand clutching a fistful of tank top, yanking and jostling Selma in preparation for a series of short, drilling right hands up top. Blair bullied, cowed: ref steps in with the break, reading Kirsten the riot act--but blonde blood is up. Selma demoralized at the bell, looking haggard. Claire comments; “Selma’s got to answer that. That was Kirsten saying ‘I’m the star in this ring--you’re not.’”

Dunst/Blair conc.

R7: Selma answers--and answers--with vigor. First: heavy, cranking, hooks levered up underneath, taking Dunst in the pit of her stomach and bunching her up hurt. Then: hooks, right uppercuts, left uppercuts and down-chopping right hands scuff away at Kirsten’s scalp and hairline as she ‘s doubled forward--Selma’s teeth bared as she tidies up, Blair roams to her right, keeping the extending left hand in Kirsten’s guard, then REAMING the blonde a vicious right cross poured in past Dunst’s left mitt. Big knee bend Kirsten--she straightens, wobbly butt, now clearly hurt and on the defensive, Back to the body with those limber, cranking hooks--Selma just arching her back, lifting a trio of the whacks in to keep Dunst breathless, Kirsten bails out, mouth open, eyes distressed: Selma hopping after her, fists balled at her chest, ready for supple deployment. Fight becomes a wide-ranging pursuit as Kirsten stumbles along the perimeter or attempts clinches: Blair stalking her prey, jabbing her into compliance, then lashing away with slender-limbed, lathering flurries. Bell to bell romp busts Kirsten up, cuts her inside the lower lip and badly demoralizes her. Judges grant 10-8 without the knockdown as Dunst;s legs prove stubborn under duress.

R8: Dunst rallies. She stands her ground, walking Selma onto the jab, then initiates a series of limber, toe-to-toe exchanges--both girls featuring willowy, bendy torsos and licking punches from the shoulder. Both scoring, but Kirsten very resolute--generally book ending the exchanges and backing Selma up in trade. Flat footed, well balanced stuff--girls getting off from middle distance with a lot of leverage--turning their torsos into blows, bending down on follow-throughs, Chins are clipped, waistlines lashed in sinewy back-and-forth--neither hurt as defensive head movement dominates. At the break--girls side by side coming off the ropes: Kirsten suddenly bends to her right, depositing a cheap flyweight elbow in Selma’s stomach. Blair bunches up “UHH!” face pinched as ref pulls Dunst away by her arm.

R9: Similar oily, toe-to-toe exchanges: eyes hard, unforgiving. Selma answering Dunst’s digging right/lefts to the waist with that limber, cranking hook up underneath. Dunst answers Selma’s sliding one-twos up top with clever right uppercuts and wide, delayed hooks. Girls frequently reach in, slender limbs writhing and pushing--then one or the other will disengage to continue punching. Sinewy stuff--both girls willing to essentially stand flat footed, trusting lissome upper body movements to keep them safe.

R10: Selma suddenly displays footwork--bopping outside, circling to her left and methodically picking Dunst apart with the jab. Good, clinical work: Selma’s face set in stone as she pounds at Kirsten’s eyebrows, cheekbones; brunettes heartless looking to cur Kirsten late. Dunst turning, covering up: she’s unable to answer or penetrate this look of Selma’s. Blair dictating--occasionally reaching down Kirsten’s body to hook behind her elbow whenever Dunst stoops forward behind her mitts. Fluid, rangy action from Selma--getting off economically from her chest, punching straight onto Kirsten, then turning her. Once again, Selma able to sidestep Dunst’s desperation lunges, coming up behind the blonde and hugging her waist with sheer insolence, Kirsten blurting out “NO!” after one such move--humiliated by her foe’s gangly elegance. Shutout 10th for Blair--she takes the round, and the match by competitive margin.

After: Blair banged up, tired, but smiling and jubilant: she takes apart a reliable big name in classy debut. “Kirsten’s tough,” Selma admits in post fight. “She digs to the body like a trooper--I had real problems backing her up or getting her off me when I needed to breath. Overall though, I’d say I controlled the action--I was the better boxer and I think I had things well in hand most of the night. I hurt her really badly in like the 7th or 8th round--but again--she was too tough to go down. Wanted to stop her, but I think her legs kept her in it, even when mentally, she’d pretty much had enough.”
