JMD fans would go away disappointed as neither hulking beauty was able to produce the KO collapse necessary for a post-fight mamboree - but fans of Ali Landry boxing would go away well pleased with her performance on the night.

The dry statistics of the match show a Landry in comfortable control of her opponent: 8 rounds clean to Ali; Kelly hurt in 4 of those - badly so in the second and dropped in the 10th; 3 shutout rounds for Ali - all good offensive measures. But perhaps the most significant results occurred in the third and seventh stanzas - rounds in which Brook landed pulverizing right hands and sent Landry reeling, but not out - a critical departure from Ali’s pattern of late. “Ali taking Kelly’s punch was huge in this fight,” notes one Celebrity ring columnist and long-time Ali-watcher. “Ever since her shattering defeats to Jenny O’Dell, Ali’s been struggling to regain her confidence, and she hasn’t taken a good shot in the wake of those losses. Tonight, she tuffed out, took a beating when she had to and got herself back together again.

For lumped-up Kelly, a disappointing setback, but her willingness to trade punches and come forward even when shook were not lost on viewers. Ali’s knockdown of Kelly in the tenth could easily have been a knockout of a lot of other women - and Brook won the final minute of the fight with stubborn slugging, denying Ali supreme satisfaction. If you have to take a beating, this is the sort to take - Kelly can be proud of the heart she displayed tonight.
