Before: Swanepoel taking this as a "stay busy" fight during the end-of-year doldrums. Big name fighters eager to tune up one another, burnish their credentials for the all-important yearly rankings; leaving middle-of-the-pack girls like Candice to take whatever they can get in the way of action simply to keep their names/faces in front of the promoters. Gabrielle Union still a force to be reckoned with; actually looking more muscular than the younger woman during weigh-in that revealed not a whit of difference in anything substantive except for Swanepoel's two and a half inch height advantage as their weight is nearly identical. Only other variation is in their boxing record where Candice has a 24 to 8 edge in sanctioned FCBA fights. It's an illusory number, however, since almost ALL of Swanepoel's fights are included whereas Union, a former University of Nebraska soccer player, has well over 100 fights in other feds or unsanctioned 'back lot' brawls in the days when such contests were accepted - even encouraged - by producers, directors and financial backers. Several of Union's battles being the stuff of legend during her days in TV and on film sets in dramas like "Cradle 2 The Grave" and others.

During Rd1: Both women on their feet before the bell, then rocket toward one another like bargain shoppers at Filene's basement after Thanksgiving! Union lands the first blow, a leaping, overhand right that buckles Swanepoel's knees. Candice quickly recovers and answers with a check hook that sends Union reeling back hurt! We're thirty seconds into the fight and already both women have been rocked!! Candice follows with a straight left, then a chopping right to put Union's back on the ropes. Gabby fighting out of a low crouch, accentuating Swanepoel's height advantage, but giving her room to work up inside the longer-armed blonde's defense with uppercuts, hooks and crosses into that long, lean, pale, torso. Union staying on Swanepoel's body, digging away with both fists; putting miles on the youngster's legs in the early going; not much coming back from Candice who's on her bicycle, letting Union burn herself out on the attack. Closing minute, both women looking arm-weary after a frantic opening pace - especially the older Union who is well ahead on the punch stats. A lot of holding, clinching, and short, choppy, punches out of the wrap as both women show the signs of fatigue after an action-filled opening round that goes Union's way...but narrowly.

Rd2: After a lackluster last minute of the previous round, Gabby opens the 2nd once again breathing fire and throwing bombs at the retreating willowy blonde, who seems reluctant to stand and trade with the stockier, stronger, Union. Swanepoel working a sharp jab that's landing, but it's not slowing Union down and she pounds Candice back a step at a time clear across the ring. Candice mixes in some body shots - and Union is willing to play that game too; cracking a right off Candice's head that causes her legs to falter. Gabby pounding combinations down low that pushes Swannie's butt into the corner. With her back on the ropes, Candice seems to firm and goes up top since Gabby is so busy engaging 'downstairs'. Grunting from a shot to her head, Union pitches in a right of her own that sends Swannie careening out of control sideways along the ropes looking a bit dazed and exposed. Gabby moves in to go to work, but Candice legs away, leaving Gabby swinging at empty air and grabbing in frustration for something to hit. With Union in dogged pursuit, Candice switches to 'plan B' getting back up on her toes again; flicking out that long, limber, jab - but sharper now. Gabby's eating it, but stubbornly coming forward throwing; missing a lot though a few are taken on Candice's slender arms which slows her jabbing. Closing in, a Swanepoel uppercut snaps Gabby's head back, forcing her to clinch, looking a bit wonky after another furious round. Union leaning into the blonde, using her sturdy legs to push the taller blonde backward. Swanepoel pulls Union's head down and slaps a punch into her neck at the bell just as the ref moves in. Outraged, Union falls back onto the ropes as Candice shoves her roughly away. The ref grabs Candice, reading her the finger-wagging riot act while threatening to deduct a point. Swanepoel dismissively flips her off with her gloved hand as she turns on her heel and struts to her corner.

Rd3: Swanepoel looking to build on her momentum from the second, still working behind a long, straight, jab that keeps the shorter brunette back on her heels - and off her body. Swanepoel showing more maturity as she gains experience, no longer a wild young swinger as her early days, she's putting combinations together with those whip-lashing long, limber, arms. When her punches land, they do so with concussive impact and Union is time and again seen to tip off balance, stutter-stepping to regain her footing as she's getting rocked from one foot to the other. Midway, Gabrielle gets socked again, her butt bouncing off the ropes, only to feel Candice's wrath as another punch follows right behind the first. UNION LOOKS HURT! Gabby clinching around Candice's chest; cheek buried in Swanepoel's modest cleavage out of harms way...giving up her ribs as the South African hottie thumps away with both fists to those flanks. Down the stretch it's all Swanepoel, rocking the older Black Beauty with looping right hands and snapping left hooks to the upper body as she works on Gabrielle's cleavage the way you might expect in one of Charlize Theron's less than sterling outings! Gabby heavy-breathing at the bell, bumping shoulders with Swanepoel as they pass on their way to their corners.

Rd4: Candice starts off again on her toes circling behind a jab that's become increasingly effective. Union does whatever she can to try and get close, staying low, bobbing and weaving, ducking in and out. To get inside, Union's eating a lot of jabs coming down from on high, it's a price she's willing to pay to reach her favorite targets - Swanepoel's slender waist and perky breasts. By moving away, Swanepoel is able to take a lot of the sting out of Union's punches, and she's painting her face in the trade. Gabby's right eye starting to swell and, as the round goes on, the damage is adding up. Union starts to take chances, rushing in under the jab to tackle Swanepoel around the waist; wrap her up and bludgeon the flanks, belly or up under her bosom to take her breath away. Shoulder driving the tall blonde to the ropes, Gabby puts her head in Swanepoel's cleavage, plants her feet and goes to paunch-punching with breath-taking effect. Swanepoel throwing Union back, coming forward behind that jab; trying to catch Gabby coming in with that sweeping right hand but Union's elusive head movement serves her well and she's able to bog down the action for the most part, getting inside Swanepoel's long arms to pound the blonde's nubile young body. An uppercut off Gabby's chin gets her backing up and her legs go a bit wonky; Union's counters become less precise and more chaotic. The tall blonde is dazzling in the latter minute; her legs and hand speed winning this fight for her! Swanepoel trying to bully Union, shoving her back under fire, but Gabby's defending her turf doggedly. Union's punches going wide, not much behind them as Candice pounds her from one foot to the other at the ropes. The crowd cheering Swanepoel who goes flat-footed, ignoring defense to open up with both hands! Union punching back, but she still can't reach the tall blonde with anything hard and her head is bouncing both ways. At the bell, Gabby's legs give way and she goes to a knee...but Candice keeps punching! Again the ref has to pull her off of Union! After consulting with the judges, the referee declares the knockdown came after the bell and there's no count; no KD points. Union takes her time getting up, shaking her head to clear the fog while Candice again struts around with arms raised after another dominate round.

Rd5: Swanepoel still catching her breath on her stool when the bell sounds, gets a slap on the tush as she stands on those long, lean-muscled legs; still a bit breathless after throwing everything but the kitchen sink at Union in her dominating performance the prior round. Union late getting her mouthpiece in, just on her feet in time to slip under a roundhouse right by Swanepoel, then lopes away along the ropes out of harm's way. Neither women showing particular energy early, both still recovering from round four; Swanepoel having punched herself into exhaustion while Union took one of the better beatings she's taken in the past 4-5 years. Maybe the critics are right, it IS time for Union to hang 'em up! Swanepoel pumping the straight jab a... DOWN GOES SWANEPOEL! Candice extended too far and was slow to pull back; Gabrielle caught her flush with an overhand right to the jaw. Candice crawling in a circle on all fours, looking for her mouthpiece as the count drones on. Candice finds it, picks it up, drops it, fumbles for it, then sits down on her haunches holding her mouthpiece in her gloves in her lap. IT'S ALL OVER...Candice Swanepoel can't get off her butt as Gabrielle Union pulls off one of the most shocking and improbably comeback KO's in recent memory!

After: Candice using her legs, youth; controlling the action for most of the fight. Wily veteran Union just hanging around, staying close on occasion to smother the inexperienced model - taking a pretty bad beating in the process - but when she saw an opening, she took advantage of one of her few opportunities in the fight to win it. Swanepoel showed she's capable of doing good things against a seasoned; arguably 'better' fighter (at least at this stage of Candice's career) but she simply let too many chances to close it out slip thru her grasp and Gabby Union eventually made her pay for that in the end.
According to one ringsider, "Candi was trying too hard to stop Union instead of just staying on her and piling up the points. You see that a lot with young fighters; not being content to simply win, but wanting to make a 'statement.' She was landing a LOT of punches; her punch stats must have been off the charts, but Gabby simply wouldn't go...or go away."
Tractorpull quoted an unnamed fighter: "Those wily old vets know how to take a lot of punishment without giving you a 'clean' shot...they just keep waiting for an opening, some mistake they can take advantage of. When they get it...BANG! This's a tough loss for the kid, but she'll learn from it. When you get somebody in trouble, you gotta put your foot on their throat!"
