Sofia V’s as big and lusty a puncher as we’ve seen in the FCBA--possessing CZJ-stopping power in both mitts--but her unrestrained slugging aggression is proving to be a mixed blessing. When you’re a big-swinging Latina home-run hitter, you book Jane Krakowski with the intent of  showcasing that power and stopping the blonde inside 3 rounds. What you DON’T want to be is whittled and vexed, massaged and harassed, used up and exhausted en route to a bitter late-round stoppage. Against Sofia, Jane used every scrap of veteran guile she’s built up over the years in crafting what may very well go down as the biggest win of her career since shocking Cat Bell.

Krakowski began each round getting off first--jabbing Sofia in the face or breasts--then stepping back and allowing Vergara to swing herself off balance. Jane would walk Sofia into short one-twos, then tie up, turn Sofia and push her off--always keeping the action midring. It was a strategy fraught with peril as it meant Krakowski was willing to engage Sofia throughout--and in the first round, a caroming right hand off the top of Jane’s head was enough to send her crashing to her back--but Krakowski kept her composure, Weathering such blockbuster blows. Jane stuck  to her game plan--pre-empting Sofia, hitting her with quality, making her move her feet. It was a classic puncher/boxer slugfest, with both girls doing what they get paid to do in early going.

After 3, Jane was beginning to build suspense. She had survived the over/under and was still in good shape. Now she was routinely beating Sofia to punches and keeping her off balance--shoving and levering the stronger woman around with nifty tie-ups off the one-two. Vergara found herself being struck, then getting walked back to ropes, and the brunette was immediately exposed as a woman who can’t fight backing up. When Jane began to mix in body shots and combinations inside--Sofia was further exposed as a woman who tends to wait her turn. Reacting with anger and frustration, Vergara became more predictable in her attacks, making Jane’s already sound defense look that much more uncanny as she routinely slipped and anticipated the incoming. Krakowski’s agile mind made note of all these, and gradually began to exploit them as the fight wore on.

Uppercuts and body shots produced enough accumulation to send a dizzy Sofia to her hands and knees, and at that point, the crowd grew truly restless as Jane had proved her bonafides, Krakowski could not only survive Sofia--she could hurt her, even dominate her after a fashion, and the fight rapidly began to resemble the later rounds of Tyson/Holyfield 1. Vergara’s plodding rushes became more desperate and less effective: Krakowski’s consistency, balanced technique and audacious attacks chipped away, steadily reducing her buxom foe as minutes ground on.

Jane would send Sofia to the canvas again in the 8th, and it was a wrecked, swaying, and profoundly discouraged Vergara who rallied herself at the ropes. Jane was stepping-to Sofia now, pounding at her with full-blooded lefts and rights, beating the brunette groggily from one foot to the other as Sofia swayed and suffered against the ropes. In the 9th, Jane made the unthinkable a reality as she simply went after the dregs of Sofia, and after a steady, brutal pounding all along the ropes for nearly the full three minutes--Vergara would go down to stay.

With the win, Jane Krakowski retains her rep as a sly, heady boxer/puncher who isn’t overwhelming in any one category, but who’s experience can pose serious problems for the unwary. With the defeat, Sofia Vergara is increasingly being labeled a voluptuous, must-have preliminary fighter for her exciting style and eye-catching ring presence--but pundits are backing off their early predictions of greatness for this hard-swinging, buxom-bodied bruiser.
