Sarah: Much has been spoken about this match up in the lead up. Some would say we just saw the rightful challenger to Abbie Cornish in Poppy. Others would disagree and say that Hawkins is the greatest and should have been given the fight. But you can’t argue with a ballot and what is drawn is what you get. Rachael, the forgotten hero in all of this after beating Krystal Forscutt for the AWUBA Superfeather title two starts back. Abbie lost her lightweight title to Elle MacPherson on that same night. She is the 4th greatest all time and in my opinion she will continue to dominate the ACB in the years to come. Rachael is 6 years her junior and has it all in front of her.

Rachael, you must be pleased to have drawn this fight, but it is a huge challenge.

Rachael: Yeah sure, I have had to make the weight and I am up against a great in Abbie, but I am focused and I coming into this with winning form so, yeah, let’s just see what happens.

Sarah: Thanks Rachael, and Abbie, the gorgeous Abbie Cornish.

Abbie: Thanks Sarah

Sarah: You copped a bit of a beating recently at the gloves of Rochelle Wiseman when chasing the BBU Lightweight title, what did you learn from that and what will you change tonight?

Abbie: Well that’s a loaded question Sarah. Wiseman got lucky. She hits hard early and tries to bully you and she got a couple of punches in early that I couldn’t recover from. I won’t change anything tonight. Rachael is the complete fighter, she can finish you early and she can go the distance so I will just try and control the fight.

Sarah: And I think you will tonight Abbie, good luck.

Round 1

Both girls cautious early, a real watchful Cornish, rocking side to side, only jabbing at positive openings. Finch likewise, more loose, lower guard, throwing jabs off the hip but can’t land a shot on her evasive opponent. Mid way through, Finch stepping to and jamming the jab straight through Abbie’s guard. Cornish shocked, takes another hard shot through the guard, backs away in a hurry, Finch attacking, steps in crouching low and swipes a wide hook at the ribs, Cornish hurt, Finch rising into a HARD LEFT UPPERCUT to the chin and CORNISH IS ROCKED! Stumbles to the ropes, Finch races in, chasing her along the ropes, jabbing left and right at Abbie’s face, she’s hopping along the ropes, guard a shambles. Finch pursuing, oh takes a desperate jab to the chin, Cornish throwing haymakers in retreat! Finch ducking and weaving the wayward gloves, careful not to get caught again. Cornish just swinging wildly, surging forward now, Finch not sure what to do, backs away toward mid ring giving her attacker some space. Cornish more structured now, working her jab at the confused Finch, lands a couple of shots at the bell, but Finch takes the round.

Kylie: Well Abbie said she wouldn’t change anything from her Wiseman fight and she didn’t and get caught early again. I don’t think Rach capatilised like Wiseman did, but perhaps she doesn’t possess that brutal knockout punch.

Kristy: I’ve not seen Abbie so messy before. I mean she got back into the fight but there was nothing pretty about the way she did it. Rachael started well and that middle minute was well constructed.

Kylie: Let’s see how they settle into things this round.

Round 2

It’s an ALL OUT SLUG FEST smack bang on the ACB logo! Both girls standing toe to toe, big power shots smacking into faces, strong body blows cracking against these lightweight frames, both girls on strong legs, leaving nothing to the imagination. Cornish lands a HARD RIGHT HOOK to the JAW, Finch ducks under the next and fires a SWIPING RIGHT HOOK to the torso. Back and forth barrage from both girls. Midway through and Cornish senses Finch tiring, takes it to her with a hard right to ribs followed by another on the same spot, Finch grimacing, steps away from the action, Cornish tracks her, banging a jab into the nose, Finch coming apart slightly, cops another hard jab to the side of the head, backing away along the ropes, she looks troubled, Cornish places a one two to the body, uppercut to the chin, Finch caught in the corner, Cornish now tiring also, has her opponent where she wants her, can’t finish, Finch all covered up, Cornish just banging away at forearms and gloves, she’s not scoring, Finch has shut up shop, there’s the bell!

Kristy: Gee big round there to Abby. She handled that first minute well and it was Finch that found the going tougher. She controlled the round thereafter but there were signs of early fatigue in the final minute.

Kylie: There certainly were. Rach to me looked out of her depth but very late in that round, there was signs of Abbie slowing and perhaps there is something it that for Rachael.

Kristy: I wouldn’t expect another toe to toe opening to this round that’s for sure.

Round 3

HERE COMES RACHAEL FINCH! Charging in to Abbie’s corner, catches her straight up with a hard left hand through the gloves, pops the head back, Abbie takes two solid blows to the bread basket, heaving out loud, eyes wide. Finch pops her head up with a tidy uppercut and then HAMMERS THE RIGHT HOOK into Abbie’s jaw and DOWN GOES CORNISH! Spun off her feet and onto her side, rescues the mouth guard and struggles to push it back in as she takes a knee at 5, Finch stunned, waits in the corner. Cornish is up at 7 and the ref starts it again. RACHAEL FINCH POURS IT ON! Cornish stomping back to her corner, her back smacks against the ropes as Finch rips into her torso, punch after punch just crashing into her ribs and chest, Cornish sinking into the ropes, right uppercut, left uppercut, head on a bobble, Finch twists into another CRUCHING RIGHT HOOK to the jaw and DOWN GOES CORNISH AGAIN! She just slumps to her butt and lays back on the canvas. Finch punching the air, she thinks it’s over. Cornish rolling to her side and taking one knee again. She’s shaking her head and wiping a torrent of blood from the mouth, SHE’S UP AT 8 and the ref lets it go. Finch sprinting in, push punching Abbie straight back to the corner, Cornish wearing the gloved helmet, as Finch just treats herself to the washboard abs, ripping crunching blows into her ribcage, Abbie’s body is thrown side to side like a rag doll with the enormity of the blows. Down comes her guard as Finch drives a STRAIGHT LEFT JAB which stiffens her up, wilting to her right, Finch switches to her left and THRASHES THE LEFT HOOK, Abbie statue like, suspended upright, LIGHTS OUT CORNISH, as Finch sends a HECTIC RIGHT HOOK right across the Cornish temple and DOWN GOES ABBIE CORNISH! She leans to the right against the ropes and bounces off like an ironing board, pirouetting on both feet and falling sideways to the canvas. It’s over! The Inaugural ACB Lightweight Champion by KO3, RACHAEL FINCH!

Kylie: Unbelievable!! Look at the scenes around Acer Arena as the crowd favourite and AWUBA legend has just been decimated by Rachael Finch. From Pageant contestant to ACB Champion, Rachael Finch cannot believe it.

Kristy: Wow Kylz what a moment in the very short history of the ACB lets go straight up to the ring and hear from Sarah who has the new champion with her.

Sarah: Rachael Finch, what a remarkable display of boxing, how does it feel to stand here right now knowing that you are the ACB Lightweight Champion?

Rachael: Words can’t explain it Sarah. People have doubted me leading into this fight, people have said I don’t deserve it, that I am not worthy. Well that’s not me lying over there with my head punched in. That’s Abbie Cornish, one of the greatest AWUBA fighters ever.

Sarah: I’m not one to comment so brutally but that was probably one of the most clinical knockdowns I have ever seen. Now just for the viewers at home, Abbie is still unconscious. Rach take us through that round.

Rachael: At the end of the 2nd she was spent. I mean really spent. There was nothing in her punches. I had soaked up a fair bit of punishment and was really tired myself but I just knew she was finished. So the corner told me to just attack from the bell and finish her and that’s exactly what I did. And now I am the ACB LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION AUSTRALIA!! TAKE THAT ONE OFF ME!!

Sarah: Brilliant, just brilliant. Sorry guys, we won’t get a chance to talk with Abbie as she is still in a real bad way, we will take a short break and be back with more action in just a moment.
