Background:
Former tennis World #1 Jelena Jankovic defeated the future World #1 Caroline Wozniacki in the final of Indian Wells WTA tournament in March 2010 which proved to be her last tournament victory as of March 2012. Wozniacki herself came back to win the event the following year against French player Marion Bartoli.

Wozniacki has stated numerous times that she practices boxing as a hobby and enters the ring for the first time to finally settle the feud with Jelena Jankovic in a fight between the last two Indian Wells tennis champions. Jankovic has lost a close debut contest against Maria Sharapova in Cincinnati in August last year and makes her second career appearance. The fight is scheduled for ten rounds in the welterweight division.

Round 1:
Jankovic circles around the blonde, fakes couple of jabs before leaping forward and landing crisp shots to the midsection. Wozniacki's hesitant on her debut, misses a straight-forwards response to the head as the brunette weaves around her efforts and pours in with more jabs to the stomach. Caroline jumps away to the ropes, but Jelena chases her immediately and peppers her jugs and face from mid-range. Wozniacki covers up, absorbs the punishment and tries to unleash some single hooks. They only graze the Serbian's flesh as Jankovic continues her opening barrage, burying the Dane under a series of punches. Wozniacki covers up extensively but Jankovic snaps her head back even through the guard and leaves her completely staggered at the bell.

Round 2:
Brunette looks to keep up the pressure, leaps towards her rival and whacks a couple of hooks, but Wozniacki reatreats quickly, hopes to maintain the distance but Jankovic just doesn't stop in her pursuit. More jabbing sequences back the Dane against the ropes and Jelena opens up from both wings, crashes a mammoth hook to the guts and sinks the blonde on her knees. Jankovic with another cross hook to the face and Caroline takes it with a loud moan, wobbles on her knees and there's a left hook to the ear sending her down!!! Ref starts the count and Jankovic punches the air in delight as the blonde scrambles back on her feet at six, her face reddened and the eyes looking misty. She covers up and prevents more brunette's nasty shots reaching her face, but Jankovic switches plan, peppers her ribcage with single jabs and at the bell it's all about the Serbian brunette. Wozniacki looks bleak and shakes her head walking back to her stool.

Round 3:
More aggression from Jankovic who dances around her rival, landing single jabs to the arms and body while Wozniacki still looks hesitant in execution, responding with weak efforts, barely grazing her opponent. Jelena with a solid hook to the face, the blonde's head snaps back again and Jankovic pours in with more attacks, whacks her in the stomach and goes all the way around the gloves and nails clean in the ear! Caroline winces again, leans on the brunette, looks for a clinch, but Jankovic's having none of it, peppers her ribcage and shoves towards the ropes where she catches her in the face with another stiff jab. Caroline bends down, covers up, ducks underneath another hook and finally manages to clinch forcing the ref to jump in. Jankovic backs away, keeps her rival pinned in the corner with another series of jabs to the midsection and Wozniacki just soaks all of 'em up, unable to find any response. At the bell, Jankovic is smiling like she's won her maiden Grand Slam with the blonde might upset and puzzled at her poor showing thus far.

Round 4:
Wozniacki circles around the ropes with her arms dropped and Jankovic jumps up to her looking to dish out more punishment, but has couple of her low jabs to the tummy blocked by the blonde's arms and here's a flying right hook from Wozniacki catching Jankovic in the eye! Jelena stumbles, clearly surprised by this shot and Caroline whacks her in the ribs with a fine sequence, landing a solid uppercut straight through the gloves moments later. Jelena wobbles on her feet, tries to jump away, but Caroline snaps her head with another jab in the nose which throws the stunned brunette towards the ropes. Quick leap from Wozniacki who opens up from both flanks, sinks the Serbian further on the ropes with a wild series to the midsection and Jankovic just weaves on her legs, leans back on the ropes, tries to find a clinch, but the Dane keeps working on her face, cracks the guard with a cross-hook and slams her ribcage with more vicious hooks. Jelena winces in pain, unable to tame the unexpected rout from Wozniacki and remains backed along the ropes until the bell. Caroline with a big comeback round, landing more clean punches then in all three previous ones combined.

Round 5:
Both girls breathe heavily during the interval, Jankovic's face shows extensive bruising after that previous round, but she gamely jumps up from her stool, looking to make amends for that horrible period. Wozniacki does likewise and both women engage in a frentic punchest in the middle of the ring, Jelena with a solid jabs to the ribs, but that hardly makes the blonde moan now and Caroline just cross-hooks the brunette's guard open and catches her in the nose with a left-hook. Jankovic wobbles on her feet, but drives forward with a low jabbing sequence. She can't direct it well enough though, just grazes the Dane's ribs and Caroline makes another small steps forwards, whacks the brunette in the chin with a great uppercut and nails her in the eye with another left hook! Incredible combo from the blonde and Jelena falls backwards on the canvas with her eyes closed!!! Caroline stands over her, just relishing the damage she's inflicted and Jankovic tries to get up, but she's still on all fours at five and as she tries to push herself up with the arms, she wobbles back and sits down on her backside still shaking her head in visible discomfort. That double combo left her completely dazed and unable to beat the count!!! KO R5 Caroline Wozniacki!!!

Post-fight:
Wozniacki leaps up in the air after Jankovic is counted out and smiles broadly despite her face showing a lot of bruises and confirming the tough road she had to endure in the early stages before finally securing the win. She was clearly surprised by Jelena's aggressive burst and allowed her to dictate the pace in the opening three rounds. Jankovic scored a good knockdown, but couldn't finish the blonde off and when Wozniacki stepped up a gear and started to display her true potential, she couldn't cope with the onslaught thrown at her. Wozniacki ended the fight with a great sequence and confirmed that she's really no slouch when it comes to boxing despite this being her debut bout. Jankovic harrassed the equally powerful Maria Sharapova for ten rounds back in August, but she's been clearly outclassed tonight once the Dane opened the performance floodgates.

After this showing Wozniacki looks poised to challenge another former Indian Wells champion, Ana Ivanovic next with both Sharapova and Daniela Hantuchova also on her radar in the foreseeable future. Meanwhile Jankovic sufferes her second consecutive loss and might settle into an all-Serbian battle with Ivanovic to salvage some pride. Who will Ivanovic chose as her next opponent remains to be seen. She's been avoiding Jankovic for some time, but after witnessing her loss to Wozniacki, she might change her mind after all.
