BBU SPRING PPV

(DOWNUNDER BOXING VS BRONZED OZ BOXING)

BBU LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

Posted by Vassago on May 13, 2012, 11:10 pm

Probably the most anticipated bout of the BBU Spring PPV takes place in the lightweight division with reigning champion Poppy Montgomery (Downunder Boxing) taking on the young upstart, poised to take over the world by storm sooner rather than later, Phoebe Tonkin (BronzedOz Boxing).

Montgomery is a decorated fighter allthough with a seemingly bigger reputation in USA and Europe than native Australia. BBU TV reporter Denise van Outen revealed some gossip in the build up to this contest indicating that Poppy just couldn't make it big in Australia, losing too many fights along her career and headed Stateside where the glamour factor was far more important than Down Under. "Let's give her credit though", Denise says, "she won a lot of bouts, but the younger girls just kept piling on the pressure and Poppy was suffocating there. She had to get out and caught a huge break with her well-documented feud with Jenny McCarthy. Poppy and Jenny just hate each other's guts and if they can't whack themselves in the face personally, they always find a way to know of the other's results in recent fights. I'm sure Poppy enjoyed Kate Beckinsale punching out Jenny during the recent FCBA PPV and wants to score a win of her own especially against fellow Oz opposition.

Phoebe Tonkin has made a rapid climb up the ACB pecking order, from everyone's favorite opponent to everyone's worst nightmare. Earlier this year she knocked out Jenny Frost, Holly Valance and literally destroyed Laura Pausini inside three rounds to secure a clash with Poppy for the BBU lightweight crown. Because of her broad range of activity, Poppy is ranked #2 in ACB pecking order, but Phoebe's almost certain to take over that spot from #5 which she currently occupies, thanks to the title belts at stakes in tonight's event. Tonkin is 17 years Montgomery's junior but if she switches the 'Jenny Mac' mood things could turn downright nasty for the loser as Poppy demands respect from her younger compatriot.

Round 1:
Champ wastes little time stamping some authority, she lashes out at her younger foe, whacks Phoebe in the chest before checking up the stability of her guard with a jabbing sequence to the face. Phoebe covers up, but ducks low and works around Poppy's midsection with single jabs, Poppy sidesteps, throws more shots to the head, forcing the challenger away. Poppy's on the front foot all the way through the opening round, jabbing with confidence, keeping Tonkin at bay, but the youngster's pretty quick on her feet, avoids most of the leather coming her way; leaps back and forth herself, makes sure the champ acknowledges her presence. Late in the round she catches Montgomery in the ribcage and signs off with a crisp uppercut which gets stopped by the guard. Both women clinch at the bell but Phoebe lands more low jabs to the ribs; refuses to accept the champion's intimidating demeanour.

Round 2:
Poppy fires out of the blocks with a quick series to the chest, lands a cross-hook to the mouth, but Tonkin just ignores this and pours with a sequence to the ribcage again. She's more effective and forces the champ back to the ropes, slightly exuberrant attack from her follows, she misses a couple of hooks to the head, allowing Poppy to move along the ropes and stay away from striking distance. Phoebe continues to hassle the older woman though, throws more shots to the arms and body, but can't connect with most of them and Poppy counters with some jabs to the mouth, trying to restore some authority. Both women tangle along the ropes; extended clinch follows and the ref is called into action. He shoves Phoebe away, but the youngster keeps coming back and throw more shots to Poppy's midsection. Bell eventually stops her progress but Montgomery looks more upset of the two as they head towards their stools with Tonkin joyfully hopping around her cornermen during the interval. The girl wants some action!!!

Round 3:
No surprise to see Phoebe closing the distance within seconds of the third and Montgomery just gives her what she wants; steps up herself and whacks her in the mouth with a solid right hook. Tonkin's defence remains in question, but that chin looks solid early on; she pours in with a response, lacing the champ in the stomach. Poppy lowers her arms but gets nailed with a right hook in the cheek herself, Phoebe's all over her like a cheap suit quickly, impressive high-tempo jabbing; Tonkin seems keen to pound through Montgomery's ab muscles. Poppy backs to the ropes, covers up and forces a clinch as Phoebe crashes off her arms and falls too much forward. Champion just bides her time for most of the round and the ref doesn't do a lot to help the young challenger. Tonkin's upset as Poppy literally pulls her to the ground, she clobbers the champion in the kidneys, immediately incurring the wrath of the man in charge. He shoves the challenger away and gives her an official warning. Poppy leaps to the opposite corner and keeps the frustrated rival at bay for remainder of the round. At the bell Tonkin's waving her arms vigorously as her crew tries to calm her down.

Round 4:
Montgomery re-assesing her game plan, no chance of an early knockout and she retreats to the ropes early, hoping to outthink the seemingly careless challenger. Phoebe just drives forward, adds more misery to the champion's confidence, lacing her in the guts before firing away an uppercut to the chin. Poppy went for the high-guard, trying to second guess her opponent, but got it all wrong, Tonkin sets her up with her favorite shot to the guts and as a result both combos score in full, sinking the stunned Montgomery on her knees. Phoebe opens from both wings, rocks the champion's head from side to side, Poppy just can't tame this sheer punching force from Tonkin, crowd's up on their feet as the younger Aussie keeps pounding the champion in the corner. Poppy starts to moan, tries to leap to the side but only falls deeper into a hole, left hooks finally splits her mitts and Tonkin with a piledriver from the right just cleans out Montgomery's nose. Jenny Mac would be proud of that one!!! DOWN GOES MONTGOMERY on her backside, just punched into the canvas by that right hook!!! Phoebe squeaks a winning scream, but this one is far from being done. Poppy's pride took a heavier blow than her physical state and the champ is back on her feet at six, still wiping something off her nose. Thankfully for her, there's no blood to be seen, but a first major hole was made in her armour and Phoebe's right after her following the command. Poppy just stranded in the corner, unable to duck away from danger, but Phoebe's slaps are less accurate late in the round, she can't break through the older woman's defence anymore and just leans on her, pushing her back further against the ropes. At the bell crowd is cheering wildly as they smell an upset, always a welcomed occurance in title fights.

Round 5:
Poppy's well aware she got uncharacteristically exposed in the fourth, wants to make sure that won't happen again as she piles with a flurry of shots, laces Phoebe in the midsection early and whacks her in the mouth again, cutting through her mitts with ease. Tonkin's unmoved though, does the girl have an iron jaw? Poppy tries to pummel her to the ropes, but catches the forearms and gets nailed with a vicious left hook to the ribs, same old story, Phoebe sticks to her plan like there's no tomorrow, halts the champion's attack with a series of jabs to the ribcage, throws another big jab to the breasts and finally forces her to retreat with some menacing shots around the chin. Poppy catches a breath and Tonkin just eyeballs her from middle of the rings. Both women begin to circle around, trying to force an attack from either side. Who blinks first? Montgomery fakes some shots, Tonkin does likewise, but still no real intentions to strike. Finally it's the challenger who looks to make something happen, she leaps up to the champion and fires a hook to the face, for once altering her strategy but Poppy covered that one and answers with a series to the midsection, ignites some moaning as Phoebe leans on her, but misses another hook to the head and gets clobbered by a vicious gutwrencher. Even louder moans from Tonkin as she forces a clinch but Poppy shoves her against the corner post, clearly on top of the younger girl now, whacks her in the chest and grazes her mouth with another cross-hook. Series of jabs follow and Tonkin's made look really sluggish for the first time tonight with Poppy catching an important break, sinks the challenger on her knees, but her charge is stopped by the bell and the ref has to drag away the raging champion much to the crowd's delight.

Round 6:
Phoebe looks annoyed during the interval, still pondering what went wrong late in the fifth, but reality bites her with full force seconds into the sixth. Poppy whacks her in the temple with a quick left hook and follows-up with a series to the midsection; Tonkin's defence gets exposed again and Montgomery pummels her to the ropes with that sequence, Phoebe hits a dire period, not as lively and agile as during the opening rounds, now just absorbs unanswered punishment, allows Poppy to score easy hits all over her arms and body. Champion has some ground to make up and grabs a second life in this fight as Phoebe seeks for energy supply, just leans on the ropes, not trying to duck away, remains rooted to the spot for most of the round. Montgomery sways her from side to side, but just can't land that one haymaker, low jabs crash off the elbows for most part, Poppy in full control of the round, but just not inflicting any serious damage. She barks in anger, leans on the younger opponent and almost shoves her out of the ring as Phoebe suddenly goes suspiciously numb. Ref drags the champion back to center of the ring and Phoebe raises her head immediately afterwards, now starts to dance along the ropes and forces her rival to chase her around the ring. Poppy wants to take more out of this round, but just can't reach the challenger anymore and turns away in disgust upon hearing the bell. Tonkin looks relieved but the BronzedOz corner is absolutely furious after this one.

Round 7:
Poppy on the move early, just harrasses the challenger with belly shots, throws an odd-one to the jugs, grazes the face here and there. Phoebe covered behind her mitts, more agile on her feet, not stepping back anymore, finds some single shots to the chest working, but gets blocked when targeting the face. Both girls took some shots to the head, but neither is terribly swollen or busted up yet, a credit to ACB physical preparation. Those women are semingly capable of taking more punches than most of their English rivals. Spirited efforts from mid-range, Poppy works to the midsection as Phoebe smacks her on the nose a couple of times. Tempo has dropped significantly in this round, Montgomery's happy to grind it out or perhaps just wants to catch her opponent off-guard. Whatever the gameplan, Phoebe just doesn't allow her to dominate the action like many experts predicted. The final minute is all about clinching as both women look to break each other mentally, knowing that the physical aspects are on par. Some trash-talk in the clinch, Tonkin's losing her patience as she had Montgomery decked but couldn't finish her off. Poppy almost tries to headbutt her in the jaw, but ref shoves the youngster away as the champ smiles ominoulsy.

Round 8:
Tonkin with aggressive jabs to start the eight, catches her breath back quicker than the older rival and the champ covers up in middle of the ring, gets forced back to the ropes soon afterwards, Phoebe with series of jabs to the stomach, Poppy just unable to find a noteworthy response, grazes the youngster in the ribs herself, but the strenght behind those shots is lacking and Tonkin opens up from both flanks, rocks the stunned champion in the corner. Big left hook opens up Poppy's guard but she ducks underneath a piledriver from the right! Whoa! Champ barely knew what was coming, huge stroke of luck as Phoebe saw that landing clean on the nose already! Poppy manages to clinch as Tonkin stopped her charge briefly expecting her rival to hit the canvas after that previous one. Montgomery with more blatant clinching, Phoebe whacks her in the kidneys, ref wants to step in, but that would mean a points deduction for the challenger. "Don't you dare to do that", Tonkin shouts in anger over Poppy's head as the ref is stunned by this response and remains on his spot. Phoebe nearly wrestles the aching champ to the ground and finally the ref has no options but to shove her away. Poppy takes a knee while all this is happening. Another official warning for Tonkin!! Now it's the Downunder corner furious, they demand a point deduction. Calamity ensues as both corners throw vocal abuse, Phoebe just turns away and goes to her stool, Poppy still kneeling down along the ropes. Time-keeper hits the bell, surely that wasn't three minutes? Ref calms down both parties as Nikki Visser from Downunder and Sonia Kruger from BronzedOz continue to trade verbal abuse. Interval lasts best part of five minutes as seasoned BBU viewers experience a taste of ACB culture. Shocking much?

Round 9:
Finally we get some action as the fight nears it's conclussion. Official word from the BBU executives, no points deduction for Phoebe Tonkin. The challenger boosted by this decision steps up to her rival, laces her in the chest and tries to nail her in the face. But the extended break benefited Poppy a lot, she's visibly fresher and tames the youngster's attack, fires away at her midsection instead, throws a nifty uppercut which snaps the brunette's head back. Phoebe well aware of the danger, jumps back to the ropes, looks to see out the victory, but Poppy doesn't doesn't let her off the hook that easily, she menaces around Tonkin, repeatedly laces her in the midsection and chest. Despite the youngster's best efforts, she gets pushed against the ropes late in the round and takes more punishment as Poppy pummels her in the stomach and breaks though her guard to land a clean hit on the nose just as the bell sounds. Phoebe sinks on the ropes, needs best part of twenty seconds to walk back to her stool. Poppy refuses to sit down, eyeballs her compatriot and tries to win the mental war before the final round. Tonkin can't look Poppy in the eye, stares down at the canvas during the interval instead.

Round 10:
Spirited comeback from Montgomery, the champ just won't go away without a fight and she yells at Tonkin "Are you ready for one, final dance, kid?" as the bell starts the last round of this gruesome contest. Unsurprisingly Tonkin remains glued to the ropes, invites the champion to square up to her and Poppy doesn't need a second offer. She comes firing with a left hook to the face, Phoebe weaves around and whacks a response to the ribs, solid left hook crashes off Montgomery's tummy, right uppercut to the jaw and Poppy stumbles forward. Crowd equally shocked, Phoebe lashes out few shots out of nowhere and tames the champion's attack. Poppy steps back, grits her teeth and comes forward again, Phoebe with some quick steps along the ropes, single strikes from the champ fail to connect, right hook counter from Tonkin has Poppy backing away again, Phoebe launches herself off the ropes again and throws a series of hooks to the head as Poppy draws a virtual line in the middle of the ring, she doesn't back away further than that. Vicious slaps to the ribcage from Tonkin, Poppy takes them and gives her some more, both women in a wild punchfest inside the final minute, the proverbial gloves are off - if not literally - as they both want to demolish each other with the latest of knockouts. Both heads snap back several times, almost a miracle that no blood is drawn, girls wrench each other's stomachs, but the ribs stay in tact - at least not until X-rays confirm no bones were cracked. Ten seconds left on the clock and Poppy stumbles forward as she misses a shot to the chest, she almost falls on her knees but Phoebe nails her in the breasts herself, launching her to the opposite side. Poppy loses her footing and SHE CRASHES HARD on her backside with five seconds left on the clock... Phoebe falls on her knees moments later and touches the canvas with her head as she starts sobbing with the physical aspects of this bout finally getting to her. Ref is left staggered in the middle of the ring and the bell comes to his rescue. Sonia Kruger is first over the ropes, demands Montgomery to be counted out. "Bell can't save your ass in the final round, you fool!". But the count never actually happened and the time is up anyway, Kruger looks like a demon as she finally turns to her girl and assists Phoebe to her corner. Meanwhile Poppy's just happy to sit on the canvas and also needs a helping hand from her cornermen as she looks utterly spent. She winces in pain as she sits on her stool as she really took a hard landing on her backside following that last punch.

After ten rounds of boxing we go to the scorecards.. and we have a majority decision... Judge number one declares the bout a 97-97 DRAW, Judges number two and three both score the bout 98-94 for your winner and... the NEW lightweight champion... PHOEBE TONKIN!!!

Post-fight:
Tonkin's too exhausted to celebrate after grinding out a majority decision over one of the most fearsome rivals from fellow Australia. But the BronzedOz corner is making up for Phoebe's laid-back demeanour and openly snark the Downunder corner which in turn looks like ready for a funeral. Even with the point's deduction it wouldn't have been good enough for Poppy to hang onto the belts and the ex-champ stares down on the canvas and shakes her head in disbelief. "Just wait until Jenny Mac finds about this one!" Sonia Kruger shouts from the BronzedOz corner and together with head coach Tiffiny Hill raises the new champ on her shoulders and they begin a winning parade around the ring. Phoebe's somewhat overwhelmed by this success, smiles broadly though as she dwells on the experience and her future looks incredibly bright in all areas, ACB, BBU and perhaps even in FCBA. The current ACB lightweight champion Rachael Finch better takes notice as Phoebe might throw the gauntlet down once she comes back to her native country!

During post-fight press conference Downunder Boxing coach Nikki Visser suggests that Jenny McCarthy bribed some of the judges to prevent Poppy Montgomery from winning this bout, but her claims are quickly dismissed by BBU executives. "We can't speak for FCBA community, but as far as BBU is concerned, we haven't detected any illegal activity from Jennifer McCarthy resulting in a decision victory for Miss Phoebe Tonkin in tonight's event. We call this issue a closed deal."

Final result: Phoebe Tonkin def. Poppy Montgomery - Majority Decision.
