ODDS & ENDS EVENT

Before: Good fight in the offing, from former champions. Penelope leggier, longer reached has advantage if she can keep things at arm’s reach. Christina firmer, more compact with a reputation for sturdiness that comes with being one of two women who’ve gone the distance every time they’ve fought Lacey Chabert.

Fighters both confident in preflight: Penelope adamant, “This is the same fight I fought three weeks ago, and the result will be the same, I will be standing over Christina’s broken body.” Ricci nonplussed, “I took the flyweight title from Sarah Carter. I’ve chased down runners before. The question is what happens when I catch her?” Penelope in yellow bikini, black gloves, long black hair long and damp down shoulders. Christina in blue retro-bikini, hair still chin-length, white gloves.

R1: Cruz has 3 inches on Chrissy, and uses it to keep this at range the entire round. Penelope mesmerizing in operation - circling; backing away; bouncing herself lithely off ropes - often to angle-around pursuing Chrissy. Mostly keeping to the jab, but lighting up with the right every now and then.

R2: Chrissy not trying to trade now, moving through Pene’s jab to work over the body for the first minute. Cruz getting the jab out to channel Chrissy’s thrusting rushes—brunette with the habit of jabbing from her temple, lifting her elbow to point at Ricci before chopping it out. Penelope with an open back-hand jab as well as a cuffing half hook/half jab—doing enough with the left hand and lateral movement to keep Chrissy outside. Ricci frustrated, bending low to menace Cruz, stalking her, but can’t put mitts on meat rest of the round.

R3: This is how Christina is going to win this fight. She bulls Penelope to ropes, gets her head on Cruz’s chest and starts digging the quit out of her body bell-to-bell. Elbows and shoulders coming into play when Pene tries to clinch for breaks, Chrissy has her right where she wants her and doesn’t want to go anywhere.

R4-6: Rounds virtual copies of each other. Penelope gets on her bicycle early to avoid Christina’s early rush, than dictating the round with her jab. Late in the rounds, she’ll start planting and connecting with the right as Ricci tires. Ricci just not able to figure out the geometry. By the end of the sixth, noteworthy damage is starting to accumulate on even Chrissy’s famously rugged chassis.

R7: Chrissy makes an adjustment, finally able to cut off the ring this round. Penelope willing to square-off and trade this round. Fans coming to their feet, as fighters exchange at point-blank range. Cruz has the heavier shot, putting rangy uppercuts to her shorter foe’s chin. Chrissy answering with volume, trying to take away Pene’s legs for the championship rounds. Penelope uncharacteristically competitive up-close, able to slug out a draw this round.

R8: Chrissy may have done it last round, she’s able to push Pene’s backside into the ropes, work her over. Penelope able to get her shoulder onto her shorter opponent, but can’t move her back, separation only lets Chrissy get some backswing on her punches. Pene gritting her teeth, trying to slug her way off the ropes, but Chrissy is quite happy in the phone booth, and stays there the rest of the round.

R9: Penelope sidesteps the early rush, able to get on her bicycle, touching Chrissy with the jab. She’s not waiting to unpack her right anymore, Chrissy ‘s getting pasted now. It’s finally too much, Chrissy breaks off the pursuit, and Penelope moves in for the kill. Penelope circles, rapid-fire punching taking toll on even Chrissy’s legs. Ricci not answering back, not going down, Cruz squares up and THE REF STEPS IN! TKO9 for Penelope Cruz, and that wins her the round robin!

After: Cruz acquisition looking like more than just a chance to give Miller a chance to finish off the best of seven. For the second time this month, Penelope has the chance to take an A-lister on a walk of shame, stopping at all four corners as she did with Witherspoon. Reese and Ricci locked in the basement until next PPV, when one of them is going to climb out over the other one’s battered body.
