Nothing like an action movie premiere to make a publicity department think of staging a fight outside the theater. So it is with “Total Recall” as stars Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel go up against each other in a ring set up front of the lucky theater. Street has to be blocked off to accommodate the fans. It’s no secret the two athletic actresses are eager for the chance to prove their boxing superiority. "I asked for this fight." Jessica says at the pre fight press conference. "We really got along during shooting and I like Kate but ever since then she's been on what twice the talk shows I've been three times the magazines promoting a film I'm the female lead in. She's trying to make this film all about her but tonight I'm showing who is the lead actress on Total Recall." Most pundits think Jessica is favored in at catch weight 120 and by every metric they can think of. Kate herself just says: “It’s not just size and strength that wins fights. I’ve the guile, the technique, and--yes, ENOUGH physicality to beat her IF I execute properly. (Skeptics think that is a BIG if!) Kate in black bikini and gloves. Jessica in silver bikini and gloves.

During R1: Kate’s game plan unveiled in this round as she first uses her jab to disrupt Jessica’s attempts to close in. Jessica takes a couple of shots to the head, not serious, but enough to get Biel’s attention. Still, Kate not giving up the offensive, but then Kate starts using little step-outs to create gaps for Jessica to pounce into--and be greeted by Kate’s check hooks. A flurry of punching follows and then a clinch. Jessica not hurt, but Kate’s looking clever and aggressive, taking the fight to the bigger woman and ultimately winning the round boxing.

R2: Jessica not convinced she can’t simply overwhelm Kate, comes forward aggressively, trying to force her way in, but this allow Beckinsale to send a hard right cross crashing into Biel’s temple. Jessica comes to a sudden halt. BIEL’S HURT! Kate now swarms in trying for a quick close out. Crowd roars with excitement as Jessica Biel is forced backwards by the Brit’s onslaught, but Jess keeps her guard up and blocks Kate’s attempted haymakers. Then Jess stops retreating short of the ropes and digs in to fight Kate in hard exchanges over the middle minute. Jessica pounding shots into Beckinsale’s ribs and tummy, plus the occasional head shot. By the final minute, Kate feeling those body punches and hunches up to try to protect her hurting torso, Jessica keeps up the pressure and ends up stealing what started out a promising Beckinsale round. Fight now even on the cards.

R3: Jessica wastes no time jumping on Kate at the bell. She’s firing explosive lefts and rights to Beckinsale’s body. Kate is forced to play defense the whole round, she survives but she’s unable to mount any offensive moves of her own. Biel takes her second round.

R4: Essentially the same from Jessica as she seems to settling into her rhythm as she stalks the defensive Kate around the ring. Kate often surprised when Jess leaps in during the second minute with shots at her head. Kate’s head swiveled and she’s clearly rocked as Biel’s got the range. Still, Kate is not shutout. She is able to shake off the head punch, keep her defenses solid and get in the odd timing-counter to knock Biel’s head back. Still, Jessica seems to be in charge as she takes her third straight round.

R5: Jessica ups the pressure now. She starts hammering shots under, over and around Kate’s guard. Kate taking a lot of leather and seems to be having trouble dealing with the Biel punching storm. Jessica shows her killer instinct by pushing Kate towards the rope and seems ready to blow the doors off Beckinsale, but she never is quite able to seriously stun the stubborn Brit. Still, Kate is now completely defensive, covering up face in gloves towards the end of the round. Jessica looks quite pleased with herself a smile on her face as a clearly sore-bodied Kate heads for her stool after the bell.

R6: Jessica smiling confidently as the she moves into cruising mode to pursue Kate and continue the punishment. Biel then leap forward looking to take advantage of Kate’s flagging defensive--but she jumps into a sweet Beckinsale counter hook. Hook catches Biel on the point of the chin, her legs suddenly turn to rubber AND BIEL GOES DOWN! Jessica on her knees with a bewildered look on her face. Kate smug as she knows she finally got the timing right and made the bigger girl pay. Biel up for a shaky-legged 8 and Kate swarms in on her. Jessica driven to the ropes and just worked over as Kate pounds Biel’s body from waist to head. Jessica finally able to cover up and survive to the bell, but her face and body are reddening glazed look in her eyes. Now it’s Kate’s turn look pleased with herself as Jessica looks completely shell shocked on her stool .

R7: The strength of Jessica Biel: despite that pounding in the previous round, Jess recovers during the break. Kate comes out clearly expecting to pick up where she left off, but instead eats a straight Biel right to the mouth. Kate staggers back and Jessica follows with a strong one-two to the jaw. KATE GOES DOWN! Kate on her butt, but she’s quickly up and trying to strike back. Bad idea. Jessica lets Kate come in, then just buries her a right in the Beckinsale belly, doubling Kate up and a left bounces off Kate’s head. DOWN GOES KATE BECKINSALE!. Kate on all fours this time, shaking her head in a desperate effort to clear it. Makes it up by 8. Jessica cold-eyed as she moves in on the plainly reeling Kate. She feints to the body and when Kate lowers her guard, smashes a beautiful right uppercut to the Beckinsale jaw. Kate’s head snaps back and her body follows crashing onto the canvas. Surely this is the end for the Brit beauty--BUT NO: Kate Beckinsale in an astonishing display of sheer determination, staggers once again to her feet. Referee looks doubtful about letting this go on, but Kate hisses: “Don’t you dare stop this!” Ref flinches and weaves Jessica back in. However this time Kate is able to cover up and Jessica has to settle for pounding Beckinsale’s flanks. Terrific round that saw Kate Beckinsale’s hopes of victory crushed as Jessica Biel essentially locks up the fight with a brutal display of boxing firepower. Jessica is seething in her corner totally focused.

R8: Jessica drives Kate to the ropes this round and gets big on her. Beckinsale fights back with defiance, countering well for the first two minutes, making Jessica pay for getting close, but Biel’s constant pressure never wavers. Beckinsale badly worn down by the bell, though she is still on her feet and teeters alarmingly on her way back to her corner.

R9: Worried corner asks Kate if she would like to throw in the towel. “Never!” Kate mumbles through swollen lips, she’s just too proud to give up and elects to soldier on. Indeed, Kate finds the reserves to battle Jessica in close as they go forehead to forehead, looking each other right in the eyes as they pummel each others bodies. Good stubborn stuff from Kate, though out-hit and forced to give ground, she does so grudgingly and gives a good account of herself in a competitive round.

R10: Kate Beckinsale has shot her bolt. Becks is all used up by Jessica’s attrition tactics of the last couple of rounds and she has nothing left but her spirit. Jessica now facing no meaningful resistance from Beckinsale and pretty much has her way the whole round. Still, for all her huffing and puffing, Jessie Biel is unable to blow Katie Beckinsale down. Kate takes a beating, no doubt of that, her face is badly bruised and swollen, ugly dark red blotches cover her torso, but she stays on her feet as she goes on the lose a fairly one-sided UD10.

After: Beckinsale battered but defiant in defeat. Observers have to admit she showed great courage and spirit in fighting on when she was clearly outgunned by a physically dominant opponent. Still, this was Jessica Biel’s bout as she scores a tremendous marquee win (despite that close call in R6) and as she puts it to the press: “I just proved I was the Alpha Female on ‘Total Recall’. Kate got lucky in ONE round, but the rest of the way I utterly dominated her. In the end, I did everything I wanted to her.”
