Before: “I’m going to give that slut the beating of her life,” Cheryl is downright threatening in pre-fight. Sarah almost too polite in response, “Cheryl looks to be a definite change from what I have been fighting this year, and should be a fun challenge.” Any similarities in style between Cheryl and FCBA flyweight champion Sarah Carter are kept diplomatically private.

White bandeau top with black starburst patterns over each breast for Cheryl, white boy shorts, black gloves, hair in a battle braid. Red bikini for Sarah, white gloves, hair in a ponytail.

Rd 1: Both fighters come out slow and careful, Cheryl getting the early advantage, as she touches Sarah with the jab at will. Gaining confidence, Cole comes inside to get more on her punches, trying to take control of the fight early. Sarah bangs to her body, forcing Cheryl back to the outside. Last hook to the body as she pulls out sends Cheryl wheeling back with a “how-could-you” look, slows her up from earlier pop, but bell sounds before Sarah can capitalize.

Rd 2: Something’s off with Cheryl, she keeps stepping in fence holes and Sarah dominates bell-to-bell. Good movement upstairs, Sarah’s not getting in any good punches. Finally Shahi traps Cole in the corner, gets a flurry of hooks into her body. Cheryl soaks up the punishment, clinches for ref’s break, spends the rest of the round denying Sarah the big punch.

Rd 3: Cheryl continues avoiding contact, clinching whenever Sarah gets close enough to work her over. Crowd starts to get antsy, and Sarah’s right there with them. In the final minute, Sarah gets careless, Cheryl catches her with a pair of shots to the jaw. Sarah shrugs them off, answers back with the best combination of the round, catching Cheryl cleanly with a left jab and a right hook. Aggression gives Sarah the round, but can’t get in any sustained damage.

Rd 4: Sarah off her stool before the bell, she catches Cheryl with an overhand right, staggering her. Sarah delivers a thumping barrage to Cheryl’s body that backs her up to the ropes. At the ropes, Cheryl firms, gets her elbows in, denies Shahi the body, starts to answer back with stubby jabs of her own. Sarah shifts upstairs, and her right hook starts to find a home in Cheryl’s left eye. Cheryl’s trying to fight her way off the ropes, but Sarah times her with that hook again, AND CHERYL DROPS TO HER KNEES! Cole is up at 7, Shahi comes inside with yet another hook to the left eye, and Cole finally brings her guard up. Sarah drops down low again, and a hard, heavy combo has Cheryl splayed back against the ropes as the bell sounds.

Rd 5: Cheryl’s left eye is still bothering her, and she still hasn’t worked out how to protect herself. Sarah’s jab finds it three times in quick succession, and Cheryl is weeping openly as it closes. Sarah only gets in two more punches before the ref steps in. TKO 5 Sarah Shahi.

After: Sarah out-boxed a slugger in her last FCBA outing, this time she slugs out a win against a willowy boxer. The search for what she can’t do continues, as she makes her case for an FCBA title shot.
