FRONT STREET AUSTRALIAN TOUR

Before: Holly’s recent US tour makes her the unofficial standard-bearer for Downunder and Australian fighters in general. She’s got her work cut out for her this time, as Anna is just naturally a bigger, more physical fighter. US fights were all statistically even going in, Torv a prohibitive favorite in both the American and Australian predictions. Anna’s a conventional lightweight, hasn’t lost in over a year, solidly comfortable in her abilities. Holly might be better described as a “super-bantamweight” preferring to fight down around 120, but with the FCBA bantamweight division dominated by heavy-handed 5’ 4”-6” fighters, she finds it hard to find fighters willing to wade through the extra reach her height gives her, forcing her and others like her to look to the lightweight division for action. Neither fish nor fowl, this our first chance this year to see how well she fights uphill.

Blue triangle-cut tie-side bikini with cloud patterns for Holly, white gloves, blonde hair shower-wet in a fighting tousle. Black bikini top, white bottoms for Anna, block gloves, hair loose down her back.

R1: The left jab/right cross combination is called the “Ol’ one-two” because it is the most fundamental combination in boxing. Anna puts on a showcase of excellent fundamentals as she dominates the first two minutes, and why not? Holly shows us in the final minute. Fundamentalist approach also makes Torv predictable, and Valance times a three-punch counter that ends in an uppercut to the jaw that sends Anna staggering back into the ropes. Holly’s able to keep her there for the final seconds, and steals the round on the element of surprise.

R2: Anna’s able to shake off the late hurt, comes in the heavy this round. Torv’s jab keeps Holly from coming inside on her own terms, than once she’s repelled the smaller fighter’s initial assault, she begins to methodically walk her prey down. Holly manages to keep off the ropes, but otherwise Anna’s moving her around the ring at will as she soaks up the hurt.

R3: There is no way Anna can lose a conventional fight, but Holly isn’t fighting one. This mid-ring counterpunching is forcing Torv to think instead of executing her game plan. Anna relying on the ol’ one-two, staggering Holly on more than one occasion, but Valance is all weird angles and changing levels, putting shimmies in Torv’s steps in return. Fighters aren’t …trading exactly , but Holly is waiting for Anna to open up, then using the openings Torv’s offense presents to get a harder lick than she takes in. Good enough to bang out a hard-hitting draw this round.

R4: Holly inside quickly, able to stagger Anna with an opportunistic right cross to the head/left hook to the belly combo that sends her bigger foe stutter-stepping sideways, makes Torv turtle up for the the first minute. Anna’s able to reestablish her guard, sticks to the fundamental approach she’s used so far. All Torv to the bell, but once again the big hit gives Valance the round, as Holly continues to lose minutes but win rounds.

R5: Anna rights the ship. Her reach advantage lets her dictate with the jab, and Holly is not about to trade at a disadvantage if she doesn’t have to. Torv’s perimeter holds for the round as she jabs her way to a shutout to give her an oh-so-slight advantage on the cards as the first half draws to a close.

R6: Second half opens with Holly continuing to live dangerously. Not a lot of choice for her, outside favors Anna’s longer reach, and she can’t match Torv’s power, she has to pick her spots and land when opportunity presents itself. AND IT DOES AGAIN! Anna comes forward with a sidearm right, and Holly pivots on her right foot to slip the punch, then swings back like a door and sinks a left uppercut into Torv’s belly THAT GUTS HER LIKE A FISH! Anna had her weight on her right foot, her punching arm was hyper extended, and I think she was inhaling. She doubles over, backing away, but keeps her feet for the rest of the round. She’s able to answer back by the final minute to avoid the Valance shutout, but drops another round to a resurgent Holly V.

R7: Holly’s been having surprising success on the inside, corner recommends Anna not let her in anymore. Torv has the reach advantage, but somebody forgot to tell Valance, as jabs lick out both ways. Holly’s had pinpoint defense all night, and this round is no exception. Couple that with an overall higher workrate, and for the first time we see Valance take a round with small-ball penetration instead of the big knock.

R8: What is going on here? Anna’s tucked in behind a good rigid, guard, but not coming forward, taking potshot jabs when Holly doesn’t have a good angle to retaliate. She’s fighting like she’s in there with one of the JKO big girls, somebody who can lay anybody out with one punch. Without the threat of the power punches, Valance reverts to the cut-in/cut-out technique she uses on fighters Seyfried’s size. Neither fighter is getting rocked here, but Holly continues to rack up points as she’s no longer stealing rounds, she’s taking them outright. Corner crew trying to figure out what happened to their by-the-numbers big girl/little girl duke, as now it’s their fighter who’s not cooperating.

R9: Anna is unwilling to commit to a punch. Holly’s counterpunching has been so spot-on tonight, Torv seems to be unwilling to take a risk. She’s ducking behind her guard, not throwing anywhere near enough punches to cause Valance concern. Initiative firmly in Holly’s hands, she’s able to keep using the in & out style she prefers when fighting smaller foes. Torv barely avoids the shut-out, Valance a picture of exuberance as she takes her third round outright and her fourth straight heat.

R10: Anna’s finally gotten over her skittishness to throw punches, comes out banging. She’s able to body up on the smaller woman, get in and work. Holly sticks around long enough to make sure that Torv is over whatever hang-up had crippled her during the second half, then spends the rest of the round avoiding pitched battles. Torv takes her first and only round of the second half, but it’s nowhere near enough as Holly puts together another classic to win a massive upset UD10!

After: Home-town crowd and home-town girl go wild at announcement, as the Downunder girls minus Amanda & Elle mob their girl. There was no margin for error in Holly’s game-plan, so she didn’t make them. She forced Anna to think instead of executing a game plan, and that left the door open for Holly to get inside her head. Front Street corner is thunderstruck, came in comfortably predicting another sweep, now finding the upper hand firmly on the other foot as Brooklyn Decker is now the only thing standing between them and a sweep. Holly just as hot as she can be, three wins in a row over increasingly tough opposition, she’s poised to be a factor in title considerations this fall
