Before: Decker on safari, looking to add yet another supermodel to her trophy case. Dueling magazine covers back in the spring put the two fighter squarely in each other’s crosshairs. Elle’s conditioning has been the stuff of legends for a generation, and the only person making an issue of her age is Decker. “I’m going to prove once-and-for-all that her day is over. When I’m done, she’s going to have to admit that’s she’s obsolete.” Elle more contemplative, she’s seen this before, “It’s flattering that someone as in demand as she is is willing to come all this way just to meet me. It’s going to be fun working her over.”

White bikini for Decker, ring connections at hips, bow tied between jugs, black gloves, hair long and loose down back and shoulders. Macpherson wearing a red bandeau bikini, white gloves, hair shower-wet in a battle tousle.

R1: Back when there was such a thing, Elle wasn’t just a welterweight, she was a full-fledged middleweight. When she chooses to use the leverage those long limbs give her for extra power, the results can be truly impressive. Decker gets treated to the full effect of this in the opening minute. She staggers back, the opening salvoes taking her by surprise. Batting her gloves together, Brooklyn rides a high guard to chest up with the Aussie legend. Once on the inside, Decker’s faster hands can overcome MacPherson’s heavier ones. Hard, two-way attrition marks the last two minutes as Brooklyn grinds out the round late.

R2: Decker is looking to come inside and work on the taller woman, and MacPherson lays out the welcome mat again. Brooklyn continues to accept the crashing impacts on the approach in exchange for the opportunity to work over Elle in close. 6 feet of muscle doesn’t move easily, but move it Decker does as Elle finishes the round butt-in-ropes again.

R3: Elle is prepared to come inside yet again, and once again Brooklyn is able to get underneath and get some leverage behind her hooks. MacPherson’s competitive throughout, but she can’t keep her back off the ropes in the final minute as Decker takes her third straight.

R4: Fighters connect on the inside once again. Elle’s able to get some separation, puts together a series of crashing right hands that send Brooklyn staggering back. MacPherson establishes respect, forcing Decker to renegotiate on the outside. To say that Brooklyn’s defense is lacking on the outside is an understatement. MacPherson’s jab dominates the remainder of the round as she

R5: Elle content to circle and strafe, taking her second straight round with the jab from the outside. Brooklyn’s learned to respect MacPherson’s power on the inside, and she can’t figure out the geometry on the outside.

R6: Decker rights the ship, connecting with crashing hooks to the body. MacPherson sent tottering to the apron, sliding along the ropes. Brooklyn can’t cut her off, and Elle avoids a shutout as she’s able to keep Decker from pinning her in the corners.

R7: Brooklyn able to force her taller opponent to stand and trade. Elle’s game, but just not able to hold her canvas. Halfway through the round, Decker forces MacPherson onto the ropes. Bodying up to Elle, making her take weight, she’s able to put a sustained beat down on her opponent to the bell. Elle still keeps her feet, and walks back to her stool without a hitch.

R8: Decker comes out looking to close things out, trying to get the drop on MacPherson by coming off her stool early, finds her first volley disrupted by an unsurprised Elle’s jab. Right cross pushes Brooklyn back, and the ACB’s welterweight champion puts on a clinic in fundamentals. The left jab-right cross combination is the oldest combination in the book, and Decker is staggered again and again by it. Elle proves she’s still in this as she halts another surge by the youngster.

R9: Elle proved she can hurt Brooklyn on the inside, but that doesn’t translate to she has to. Decker finds out the hard way that calling your shot may be good showmanship, but it also makes you predictable. MacPherson never promised to beat Brooklyn to the body, and doesn’t feel the need to win this on anybody else’s terms. Elle circles, jabs, just chipping away, using that three inch height advantage for everything it’s worth.

R10: There’s a difference between a classic and a cliché, and Elle shows us the difference. Brooklyn doesn’t have an answer to the ol’ one-two yet, and she gets drilled again and again. Decker can’t get any sustained offense together, and takes another shellacking. She keeps her feet, though and the bell finds the fighters with 5 rounds apiece, no knockdowns, no shut-outs. Aussie rules kick in, no maybe about it, we’re going to overtime. Knockout or first fighter up by two wins this thing.

R11: Elle’s got legs, she knows how to use them. (As long as she’s acting like it’s 1983, the rest of us might as well get in the act) Circle and score got her back in this thing, and Decker isn’t giving anybody any reason to think this one’s going to be any different. She tries that Jeri Ryan-esque rapid-fire suppressive jab, but Elle isn’t interested in letting her close, and is perfectly fine stepping out of its way. MacPherson takes the round, and is poised to close out the sweep.

R12: Don’t get the brooms out yet, Decker gets the jump on MacPherson, muscles her into the ropes. Elle trying to slip along the ropes, but Brooklyn’s stepping with, not letting her off that easy. Elle pretty in the pocket, but eating quality leather as Decker works over the body again. MacPherson clinches, turrrns Brooklyn into the rope in the second minute, administers her own working-over. Final minute, they swing -reverse along the ropes, top position shifting three times amidst hard two-way punching. Decker on top at the bell, hard round to score. Judges announce it 10-9...Decker. Get Comfortable folks, lucky 13 is on the way.

R13: If Elle has any problems with the scoring of that last round, it doesn’t show on her face. Leggy, lanky round as she plays keep away with Decker for the whole three minutes. Jabbing for points, rotating, never giving Brooklyn a clean shot, it’s all Decker can do to avoid the shutout that would give MacPherson the fight and Downunder the sweep.

R14: Decker has to bring the fight to MacPherson, and they both know it. Elle using her extra inches to evade, saving her punches until she knows they’ll connect, pivoting and angling likes it’s the 5th round. Decker in earmuff, gets lead a LONG two minute dance, finally finds MacPherson’s solar plexus with a left hook, stops her long enough to muscle her to ropes. Brooklyn STILL trying to beat Elle to the body, pounds her out in the pocket in the final minute to take the round.

R15: Pressure on Elle again, not that you can tell from the way she comes out. MacPherson boxing pretty, slippin and a-slidin, fitting Decker for the jab again for the first minute. Brooklyn back on the chase, trying to walk her down, suppressive jab just leaves her open, so she just keeps the best guard she can as she looks to cut Elle off and close with her. AND MACPHERSON IS DOWN! Decker FINALLY goes upstairs and Elle is down in a heap! She’s not getting up, and Brooklyn Decker posts the hardest KO of her career!

After: Decker manages to avoid the shutout, but makes Elle the front-runner for Cougar bout of the Year in the process. MacPherson showcasing just why she’s the Head Trainer of Downunder, watching her protégés handle a pair of bigger fighters, then showing she’s still got it, giving the fans an extra half a bout with a fighter half her age. Elle’s stock at a high not seen in years, as she engineers a highly successful summer for the oft-overlooked Aussie stable
