"The New Year's Eve Body Paint Fight Night"

Before: Selena looking over her shoulder, sees another 5 foot 5, 20-year-old brunette with her own Disney series being prepped in the BBU, finds herself having to fight for recognition a whopping 6 fights into her career. For her part, Debby Ryan seeing the chance to make a splash right off the bat at the expense of Gomez. Toss in leading off the event, and this is easily the biggest fight in either girl’s career.

“This girl’s been coddled all the way up,” Selena proclaims beforehand, “she was a guest on my show, then on Brenda’s, always where she could screw up at leisure, because who cares? Then they did the same thing in the ring, kept her over in the BBU where nobody was going to see her. I’VE been in the spotlight from the beginning. If I knock a girl out in the 8th, they want to know why I didn’t do it in the 5th. She’s got no clue how to handle pressure, and watching her freeze in the headlights is going to be so fun to watch!”

“Selena’s had everything handed to her,” Debby retorts, “she had her own show handed to her, I had to actually work to get noticed. I didn’t get my own show till this year, and let me tell you, Brenda was the only one who congratulated me! She can’t handle the fact that I’m finally surpassing her, and she’ll do anything to keep me in her shadow!”

Unusual decision as fighters elect to enter together becomes clear as their choice of outfit is revealed. BOTH girls opting for a full bodied black & white Harlequin effect. Right side of Selena’s body white, left side black; Right side of her face black, left side white. Black right glove and shoe, both white on the left. Entire effect is reversed for Debby, Left side of the body white, Black glove on her left hand, et cetera. Implication clear, Ryan is fully intending to replace Gomez in the crowded flyweight division.

R1: ACTION! Both girls up on their toes, coming in straight out of the Disney playbook. A whirling, swinging melee as both fighters change levels and directions at will. Both trying to use the jab to set up something stronger, while slipping and pivoting to avoid receipts. Fight moving all over the ring as both girls are able to land the jab, but can’t hit the followup. Hard round to score, and the physical & stylistic similarities between the fighters don’t help at all, but nobody hurt in a high-energy opening.

R2: More of the same: bouncy, energetic battle of maneuver fought at close quarters. Debby getting that extra touch with the jab to start, but neither fighter able to follow up. Selena will get touched with the jab, slip the follow-on hook, poke Ryan with a jab of her own, then watch Debby pivot away from the follow-on uppercut. Just before the bell, Ryan fakes the hook, goes into the pivot WITH Gomez, comes around and tags her with the hardest punch of the fight, a side-arm right that sends Selena stutter-stepping away as the round draws to a close.

R3: Selena not liking that last bit, throws out the fight plan like only a rookie can. Gomez steps into Ryan's jaw with the right hand, Debby backpedals with a ”how could you” expression. Ryan gets her feet planted, lips peel back into a snarl, comes forward flat-footed with fire in her eyes, as Gomez waves her in with both hands. A wild-swinging brawl ensues. Both fighters lashing back rights and lefts as they dip and turns into haymakers. Gloves caroming off heads and shoulders, buffeting off chests, bouncing off flanks. Selena eats a pair of right hands to the chin in the final minute that have her stumbling forward, but she firms, punches back to Debby's body and denies Ryan a finishing run as Debby takes the round late. Girls SHUDDERING with adrenaline rush at the bell, lips parted, breath coming in big gulps. Neither one showing any of the caution we saw in the previous rounds.

R4: Both corners trying to get their charges back on the gameplan, but little ingénues are determined to settle this body to body. Flat-footed stalking, circling, lead-off jabs to faces, and then they’re in there throwing haymakers. Crowd-pleasing, mindless two-way attrition as this fight crosses the line, if it wasn’t personal when it started, it is now. Midway through, Selena is able to step into a uppercut to the breadbasket, Debby gasps, crumples forward behind a suddenly raised guard. Gomez bodying up like she’s trying to be a JMDer, but lack of experience means she’s smothering herself as she forces Ryan into the ropes. Ref moves in to break up the clinch, Selena slings a side-arm right as fighters are separated, AND DEBBY’S DOWN! Insurance punch catches Ryan flush on the temple, she’s sprawled on the canvas. Ref goes ahead with the count, goes in the book as a KO4 Selena Gomez

After: Selena tired of the comparisons, doesn’t stick around after the fight. Slipping through the ropes, she makes her way indoors without looking back. Brenda Song slips into the entryway, making a beeline for her friend still in the ring. Neither girl is really looking where they’re going and they bump shoulders as they pass. Both girls make eye contact now; Brenda challenging, Selena defiant. Not a word is spoken, but when they start forward again, this second shoulder bump is deliberate and both girls are rubbing them as they separate.

Dirty break leads to a controversial ending & ensures that this isn’t over. Whether in the BBU or the FCBA, Debby will be looking for revenge. But for now, Selena has turned back her first serious challenger.
