Before: HBO reluctantly bows to the pressure from Team Fishel for this rematch, expressing concerns that Hu might have too much of an edge for the dauntless challenger: “Dani’s a valuable property for us,” drones one faceless exec, “She’s one of the pillars of the FCBA and we need a Dani Fishel at 118, so yes, we’re concerned about the risk she’s taking against a taller, faster, more technically proficient champion.” Fishel angry to say the least, dismissing boardroom concerns because “Those stuffed shirts aren’t warriors.” For Dani, it’s redemption pure and simple. Hu showing select footage from her last, glorious outing against Dani—reviewing a clip, then turning mock-seriously to the audience as if she’s worried she might end Dani’s career or worse, Fishel writhing in her seat, finally loses it when Hu addresses her: “Dani—I’m begging you—Woman to girl—it’s not too late for you to back out. I don’t want to become an executioner in the ring.” Fishel restrained by her handler as Hu smiles sweetly across the podium. Kelly in red beach volleyball bikini, slick ponytail, Dani in teal sports bra, grey stretch cotton shorts.

During R1: Dani with a Riley look, fists at her temples, bobbing side to side, stepping forward. Hu answering with the Mayweather Slide—left shoulder exaggerated towards her foe, right hand screened at her chin, ready to lick out as Kelly lures Dani forward behind an alternately slapping stinging jab from the hip. Takes a while, but Dani’s constant pressure finally backs Hu to the ropes in the final minute—Fishel getting off with bashing wide rights and lefts to the waist—Kelly with her arms in, dipping and bending back into the ropes to minimize the damage. Round toi Hu00but Dani chatty after the bell, defiant.

R2: Dani bobbing forward, fists high, coming out of her crouch with biting lefts and rights—she’s catching Hu as she steps back with grazing haymakers—forcing Hu ropeside, Kelly with the closed stance, hiding that right hand—she stands with her back to the corner, timing Fishel with sudden slamming rights down the middle, then closing up again as Fishel rampages wide. Dani smashing the back and waist of her opponent, crossing her arms to push up on Hu, then reefing Joe Frazier style with her legs and body behind every punch. Hu finally beaten into a shell, covered up tight, rolling with punches—Dani splattering leather against Hus back and sides as the ref jumps in at the bell.

R3: Kelly retreating, touching Dani with the jab, striking hard with the right—but Fishel continues to force Hu to the ropes and once there--it’s all Dani. Kelly slipping a lot of leather, twisting her face away from danger, but her body is taking on damage as Fishel torques into the trademark hooks and clubbing right hands to the midriff. Dani pushing up on Hu after the bell—ref forced to separate the battlers.

R4: Kelly’s been sliding straight back and Fishel’s been taking advantage—Now Hu steps to the side, turning Dani, and Fishel can’t cut off the ring. End of the first minute, Kelly with that closed stance walks Dani into a lethal right hand counter across the teeth, smacking the bit out of the mouth—Hu stepping away as Dani swoons, content to punish the challenger from outside. All Hu the rest of the way as she circles, melts away whenever Dani looks aggressive, then slashes in with dizzying 3 punch combinations to bust Fishel up at the bell, Happy Kelly Hu strutting back to her corner at the bell--THIS is more like it.

R5: Pattern emerges—Kelly controlling Dani with legs and a cobra jab, circling, pecking, and walking Fishel into quick strike right hands from the shoulder. But just as it looks like Dani’s falling behind, she leaps into an unexpected left hook, or heaves a sweeping right into Kelly’s gut that shakes Hu, makes her back off and prevents her from rolling up the challenger, Round to Hu, but Dani stubbornly refusing to get discouraging, finding ways to stay dangerous.

R6: Kelly dancing, backhanding the left, but after the first minute, a series of looping rights and lefts as Dani works into and out of her crotch backs Hu into the ropes, Kelly standing straight up, leaning into the ropes doesn’t like the pressure, spins away, backing to center ring with her hands down and Dani NAILS the champ a leaping left hook from the knees. DOWN GOES KELLY! Hu ROCKED to her to her back, props herself up on her elbows in shock before taking 8. Total war erupts as an enraged Hu tears into Dani—Fishel grinning, giving battle and the crowd goes wild as fists tear up beautiful faces, or plunge heartlessly into giving bodies in the fiercest punching of the fight. Dying moments, Hu draws a bead on Dani, getting Fishel stumbling forward and just turning her shoulder into a series of short right hands on the jaw to leave Dani wobbly butt at the bell, Dani’s cut, gushing—Hu’s jaw swells and distorts her right eye as punishment adds up in both corners.

R7: Kelly Hu changing tack, going with lead rights as she leans in, leaning away with a slinging left hook—Fishel punched into a stupor in the opening minutes as Hu opens up. A cuffing triple left hook turns Dani around Hu in a clockwise stumble, finally crumbling the challenger sideways to the ropes and Dani’s eyes are blank! Hu squaring up, lets those hands go in the fight’s first true Hu flurry and DANI GOES DOWN! Fishel on all fours, beaten to her knees by an avalanche of lefts and rights, but she refuses to stay, climbing ropes and swooning as she nods at the ref. Kelly piles on, slashing her fists up and down, side to side, tearing through Dani’s defenses—crowd roar turns shrill as Fishel begins to take on unacceptable punishment—little warrior with her butt on the ropes, arms crossed helplessly as fists crash against her unprotected face, Hu carpet bombing Dani’s head, but can’t coax her to the canvas—final minute sees Kelly back off, lure Dani around the ring, just tapping the challenger with the odd jab to run the clock., Fishel battered beyond recognition, but refusing to submit as ref questions her during the break.

R9: Kelly back on her toes—fight takes on the familiar pattern of Hu stepping, sliding away, touching Dani with pinpoint jabs and crosses from the closed stance—Fishel answering with odd leaping hook to keep Kelly honest. Hu staying out of trouble, controls the round—looks relieved when her trainers tell her “last round.”

R10: Kelly lands a couple jabs, swats a hook, then bends away as Dani comes heaving back with all-or-nothing hooks from down low, Volume negating power for much of the round, but down the stretch, Dani badly overcommits on a hook and lunges awkwardly into the ropes, Hu on her in an instant, POUNDING right hand from the shoulder and DANI IS HURT! Fishel with her arms entangled, can’t get off, can’t protect herself and Hu rains down a series of pelting rights that have Fishel stunned. Ref steps in eventually, but the damage has been done—a shattered Dani Fishel pulls her mitts to her mouth, staggers away as Hu walks her down. Vicious beating down the stretch as Kelly shifts weight from foot to foot, twists her hips into slashing power punches to beat Dani down at the bell. Fishel goes down at the bell, Fishel goes the distance, but she’s dazed as Hu stalks away, drained and pale herself., UD10 for winner and STILL bantamweight champion—Kelly Hu.

After: Awkward moment as a vindictive Kelly Hu comes over to give Dani a walk of shame—Syren interposing herself, barring the way and telling Hu “You didn’t earn it, Kelly.” Dani leaving it all in the ring, gives a spirited effort in defeat, putting Hu down and really pushing the champ to her considerable limits. Hu ungracious claiming an off night—but she came within a couple of minutes of being yet another Dani Fishel upset victim.
